Not the quirky game I was hoping for

Not the quirky game I was hoping for

Amazing Adventures of Captain Maloneum: The Pinnacle of Masculinity is a “non-typical” RPG Maker game by Wraithweave. I say “non-typical” hesitantly, because it is exactly what you expect out of an RPG Maker game that is trying to be different. Let it be noted that I didn’t finish the game, but I feel I played enough of it to make a judgment.

Gameplay
This game uses the default 2003 battle system. The battles in this game are reasonably fair, although the point I quit was when I encountered three creatures that all inflicted 2k3 Poison on every character quicker than you could heal it. I died trying to escape.

The main problem with battles is that there is no variety. I found four skills in the game – a free healing spell that only affects Captain Maloneum, a buff for Captain Maloneum that you don’t get for quite a while, an enemy skill that poisons you and an enemy skill that kills the user to no affect on anyone else. Keep in mind that there are a lot of enemies in this game, with random encounters too. The battles start off with you winning in one turn, but soon they drag on… and on… The bosses were especially tiring and posed no threat.

I will say, however, that the seeming open-ended-nes of the game was very refreshing. If the actual content was enjoyable, this would be great!

Narrative
This game is a jumble. You go from place to place killing stuff and talking to people that make you feel like you’ve missed some detail that makes it more coherent.

Max McGee would be proud.

The game’s page makes it seem like a quirky, funny little tale with witty dialogue. Instead you get the words “retard” and “dildo” used excessively with no other real humorous elements. The dialogue would be poorly written without these elements, too. The dialogue is awkward, confusing and not very informative.

The characters aren’t interesting either. Captain Maloneum is an obviously homosexual protagonist who only ever says “Hi hi hi” and wielded a dildo, making for the most disturbing attack animation known to man. The other playable character I found spoke a little, but wasn’t at all interesting. The NPCs were no better. I’d say the best characterised NPCs in the game were the Emo Ghosts, while suicided on their first attack.

I hate it when games give you too many options!

Graphics
Nothing much to report here. Typical 2k3, really. The maps weren’t stellar, but they got the job done. My only complaint here is that caves didn’t seem to have walls.

Audio
I don’t know whether the music was original, ripped or RTP but it all blended in well and set up the correct atmosphere. So yes, good!

This game looks much better than it is. The battles are abysmal and the dialogue lacking. I was very disappointed with this game.

I like strange ideas being turned into decent games. Apparently this is not the case. Sad. I like the concept.

The 524 is for 524 Stone Crabs

Now it seems like a joke game.

I did too, which is why I downloaded it. But it isn't at all funny, and is a very predictable kind of strange.
Kind of reminds me of some other joke game, only not as WTF.
*cough!*Chrono Trigger*cough!*
Hehe, I made this game and I take full responsibility of all what you said, and indeed, that's probably what I would think of this game aswell if I would be a stranger to it and playing it for the first time.

Uh, I have to try to redeem myself? No? But I'll try anyway. This game started as a "testing" of the RPGMaker 2k3 for me. Y'know, we all make our first game for the first time, maybe put a guy walking on an island, put an NPC there and give him a line of dialogue and then try it and be like "Whoa, awesome, I made that all by myself!". So, this game started from that and it shows. Other reason beign this game was meant for small group of people I know and we consider this Captain Maloneum character there as a meme of a sort. So this game is more of a contribute to that small-circle funny stuff.

But thanks for your fair review and comments. It was a hit in the nuts by the 1 star rank, but I probably wasn't expecting more. But you made a good review with your points out and not just yelling "This game sux!!!1" which is something I can value.

Peace! And sorry for wasting your time.
Hey Wraithweave!

It's always good to see people taking criticism well.

To be honest, I could tell this was a first project once I started playing it, or at least an early attempt. I will say, however, that the fairly solid eventing shows that you have promise for future games. I encountered no bugs on my play through, which is more then can be said for most games(beginner or not). I think if you learn more about game structure, you'll have great games in no time. Sadly, this doesn't show through too well in this game.

Don't let it get you down. My first release got bashed to hell! I can't wait to see what you come out with in the future. And just remember that your game looked interesting enough for me to want to play it!
