Part One Release

Hey all! It's been quite a while, but after being nudged by various folks over the years, I've decided to put out a release of Everlasting Journey. It contains Part One, and the opening chapter of Part Two.

It's certainly had problems, but I would consider what's at least in there now to be "complete" - with the exception of some existing rips I was honestly too tired to replace in my latest pass/playthrough. I'll be adding some guides for it, but here are some immediate things that come to mind:

1. Controller suppport - currently, it's just XInput, so any Xbox controller will work out of the box. Other controllers (PS4, etc) will need to be mapped using some other utility.

2. Achievements / Game Jolt Integration - Make a Game Jolt account & jot down your "Game Token". Hit Shift+Tab in-game, or hit the Guide button on the Xbox controller, sign in with your account name & token, and it should just work from there.

3. Treasure / Pots & Barrels - Treasure chests found are tallied by the end, pots & barrels are not.

I hope y'all can get some enjoyment out of it! It's been tested pretty thoroughly, but let me know if there's any weird bugs.

I've only experienced a few minutes because I want to do an LT of this, but I have a few things to say right off the bat:

-The title screen doesn't have a background image. The Controls section does, but the title is just the logo, "made by X" and black
-The dialogue's amusing, but you need to work on punctuation and where capitalization goes. I'll point this out more specifically when I record, but this is going to sour both my views and my eventual score

Regarding the title screen:

Having no background initially was deliberate. Once you save a game, and go back to the title, you'll see 1 of 5 different background images. I don't disagree with you about the "controls" background. It was kind of last minute, and I didn't bother making a condition saying "if this was selected on the initial title screen, show this version of the controls page." I'll do something like that in the next version.

You'll have to show me some punctuation examples. I was never an English major, heh.

I enjoyed it, I think the battles were well done.

And I liked where when you were under a tree canopy, you get the little head and arrow to show where you are.
That was neat.

The title screen was also something very neat.
I'm going to send you such a good private message you don't even know Pepsi!

This is good! Flob! I've just reached the part where Paul takes to the skies. Oh, BTW, I chose "boyfriend" in the early dialogue- I was curious, does the choice make much of a difference to the plot, or merely change what Paul says?

How could I forget? :) You suggested smaller battlers/monsters if I remember correctly. I look forward to hearing your review/feedback!

Haha! Those choices are just there for different reactions from Sparrow/Paul. They don't matter, although the thought had crossed my mind originally to make them matter later on, but I haven't bothered.

If you force quit or F12 the game, you can't restart it. It bugs out with a read error.
Edit: I just tried that on a Windows XP machine. It doesn't force quit, just restarts. I did not get the error.

Regardless, it's not something I can fix, as it has to do with the patched exe. Someone else said they couldn't play it from a 64-bit version of Windows 7.

I'm on 64-bit Vista.

Restarting my computer made it work, however, and I've recorded ~two hours of LT. Might do more today or tomorrow; gotta let my voice/nose recover first. Compressing and uploading now.

Broad stuff to cover:

-Game is good-looking; only a few real complaints graphically
-No point in having a run command (especially since you never mention it in-game as far as I could tell)
-Too many battles; first dungeon is boring as hell and you have to do it THREE TIMES
-Is the INT stat worthwhile/did you do the attribute stuff that makes the stat actually effective?
-Overall fairly fun; not amazing but I do like the details

So far, I'd give it a 3.5. It'd get a 4 if battles were jazzed up a bit (or at least reduced in number) and the overall correctness of dialogue was patched up.

Something I haven't mentioned in the LT yet is that characters are amusing, but don't really have much personality. At least their Single Defining Trait isn't too obtuse (Sparrow's perversion, Athesis' hastiness); this isn't really a problem, I guess, since they keep the game going and don't break their characters in order to make jokes. Something I did mention, however, is that your NPCs are annoying and inane. See the videos (once I upload them) for specifics.
Finished the thing last night. I have pretty much the same complaints as Craze.

Game is pretty. It's pretty entertaining(though rarely laugh out loud funny) plot-wise, and is generally fun.
It's very good, BUT:

Too many battles. Encounter rate is way too high. I got lost in the last dungeon and accidentally grinded to a ridiculous level because I could never escape from anything. The people I took inside are way higher than the others.

Battles are boring. Even by Lv. 35 or so, most characters have a handful of abilities, and most serve no purpose. Most characters are horribly dull in battle. They're all the same. Healing magic is pointless (Mortions are so cheap, you really don't need anything else), debuffs are useless because the caster has too little mp, buffs are useless because they don't last long enough. Outside those handful of spells, everybody gets Element 1 and Element 2, and you always just cast the better one at all times. If not, then you attack. There's minimal strategy. This is made even worse because the battle system is SOOOO slow. You have to change some of the Agl numbers to make the game faster. At all times, I felt like all my characters could have had twice to triple the agility that they did have.

Might do a review at some point, but we'll see. Until then, I'd say this game is def. a 3.5, maybe a 4/5, but it could so easily be even better with some tweaks to the battle system

That's what i guessed.- probably skeptical they're merely friends and upset that they're lovers.

Originally I wasn't sure about the music you chose for the underground,- i usually think of that piece as suited to icy places -but entirely changed my mind once I disvovered what "lived" there... . .
. Some of the items, such as eth, are missing animations and numbers. BTW, if you'd like some music for the second part, I've been working on converting/editing some spcs from lesser-known games. *downloads the update*

Ahem- in Firam castle., during the rebellion. . .

I'll fix that. It occurred because there's an alternate battle event that calls another event on the same map and determines which battle to give you. In that particular map, the event referenced is wrong.

It's not game breaking, so I would just avoid that room for now until I can get another patch out.

OK, I will for now but I hope there wasn'tt any nifty item there!. Just to warn everyone else, it's the first door you come to on the lower floor of Firam castle.
I fixed most of Craze's major complaints brought up in his LT videos.

-Encounter rates in both the Raanan/Toran & cliche forests, as well as the Borland underground have been brought down.
-Raanan/Toran forest now only has battles when you first go to Toran until you fight the slime boss.
-Red slimes have higher HP and cast Cure (still have to test to see if this is okay or not)
-NPCs in the Bordia towns are a bit more tolerable. Horrible old jokes have been removed.
-Mud monster boss is now weak to water attacks, general monster tweaks.
-Slime boss has more HP, casts Confuse
-Cliche forest boss is no longer as resistant to physical attacks
-General punctuation and grammar fixes
-Some common strings have been tweaked (shop messages mainly)
-Firam Castle bug has been fixed.

I'll be able to test those areas out tomorrow evening and release the new version then.

When you first encounter the airship in Firam, you can just leave before fighting you-know-who via the path below the airship landing site. Returning to the map borks the whole series of events. Serves me right for seeing if it was possible!
Ah thanks, you're right. It'll be fixed in tomorrow's update.

Ah, good work, PepsiOtaku! I'll download the update when it's up.

An idea from Little Wing Guy on Youtube:

Heck, Splash could lower Thunder defense to make Static do more damage.

One concern of mine was that in Active mode the monsters, especially in the Tower, are often so fast they get in multiple hits before the heroes can even move, and use debilitating spells fairly often. However, my characters ARE wearing fairly heavy armor, which lowers Agility... hmm. One question, though- does AGL affect how fast the ATB gauge fills?

Honestly, I'm having some trouble surviving here. . .
The game frezes in Paul's Castle roof scene after the duel :/ It has happened 3 times already
