Falls into the bad habits it mocks

Everlasting Journey by PepsiOtaku seems to be an attempt to make a good-looking, funny and traditional RPG, with the humor stemming from poking fun at the genre's tropes. The problem is that it falls into the worst of them.

I got through a handful of dungeons and towns, up through a... lava place. With undead soldiers that didn't do anything except give vague exposition. By that dungeon, I was so bored with the battle system (you can attack, Phillip can steal, and other characters get the imaginatively named Wind1, Water1, etc. The annoying Floo character that randomly says "flob" also gets a fairly useful boss-killing Poison spell and Petrify, which I got too late to use. Beyond that, there is absolutely nothing to the battle system except enemies that attack you) that I started playing Etrian Odyssey III while recording. I mashed spacebar and healed after every few battles.

The game is fairly good-looking, though! There are some nice custom animations, although it looked odd that Flobo's battle sprite moved when inactive and the other folks just stood still. The drug trip is well-done, even if I don't agree with the rampant drugs in the game (to the point where Berserk is cured by taking a hit of Reefer).

The characters do very little except participate in boring battles and lampshade the annoying RPG tropes that game takes pleasure in participating in. I started to like Floo, but then he decided to start using "flob" like "kupo" and I began growling. No, seriously. I was playing Etrian Odyssey III, recording a Let's Try, playing the game and growling all at the same time. Go me.

The deathblow this game gave was (spoiler warning, but not really) Sparrow and Athesis sharing a kiss after fighting a very weak and pitiful boss that was built up to be some crazy badass. The animation during the romantic interlude was great - Sparrow edging up was even amusing. Then she said "your welcome."

It's a good thing I accidentally screwed up the recording, because I went a little nuts.

I'm giving this game 2.5 stars. It looks good, except for a few odd facesets, and has some nice details and animation. Unfortunately, it's boring - there are a few truly amusing sequences, but there's too much lackluster gameplay and stupidity getting in the way. Honestly, if somebody playing and talking about the game gets so bored that they start using their DS while recording...?

I meant Darkness as in "spend your HP to damage all foes."

In general, I would suggest moving a lot of the more advanced features much earlier. It doesn't take very long to get used to traditional RPG battles! Spice 'em up early!
Please don't change the skill names. I LIKE Fire1 being Fire1. What's this skill? Oh a basic fire attack, makes sense. Or, Jaruman's Burning Conflagration? Perfect! Only 2 MP! Oh, it's a basic fire skill. I want skill names to be quick n' easy.
Darkness would be sweet. I might apply that to Shadow skills you find later on.

I haven't decided yet, but that's a good argument! If they were changed, I'd probably do something similar to Skies of Arcadia where spells of a certain strength uses the same suffix: http://skiesofarcadia.wikia.com/wiki/Magic
Fira? Firaga? Firajagahaja? Blech, just make sure you choose suffixes that aren't AWFUL.

Firajagahaja would be perfect. Watrajagahaja, Icajagahaja, Boltajagahaja, Windajagahaja, and Earthajagahaja all have quite the ring to them!

After looking at tutorials: Blue Magic will definitely be in. I'm not sure which character will use it yet, maybe Sueto or Miles.
Why not Phillip? He's a salty sea dog who's seen the world!

Kaempfer, by you liking "Fire1" you have lost ten respect points.
Oh yes lets name fire attack with something unorthodox and totally unlogical that it takes us hours to find out what the heck it is like "ardour onset insubstantial " and without reading the mindboggling description like "The ablaze rose sky fervents the flesh of thy person, your picking"we wouldnt know what the heck it is,but we will be original. I prefer practical over fancy, but ofcourse he could at least change the name...

Okay, there is a HUGE FUCKING DIFFERENCE between changing Fire1 to Flame or Burn or Ignite or Fire Release or something than changing it to FRENCH SENTENCE.
But what does it matter? Fire1 is the first in a list of incrementally more powerful Fire skills. I don't want to have to remember which is more powerful; Flame or Fire Release. I admit, having a skill called "Spark" that is just like Lightning0.5 is a bit silly (it should just be replaced, if it's only going to do basic damage).

If one is being realistic in a game, Fire1 doesn't make any sense. No one would cry out "Fire1!" when he casts the most basic fire spell.

Imagine casting the strongest fire spell, and the caster goes, "FIRE3!!" -.-

Of course if you don't care about realism, by all means.
Yeah while we're realistically yelling out spell names

Lmaoo, realistically I wouldn't yell out spell names as I was casting them.

That's silly.
If we're going for realism now, why can they cast spells at all? Lawyered.

I don't think you're going to find a happy medium here. You should just decide whatever you think is best, as long as it clearly states the strength or level of the skill in either the name or description, people should have no reason to complain.

Also, just because something is named "Fire 2" doesn't mean they are shouting that name, it means they are using "Fire", but a stronger version of it. I haven't played an RPG recently where the characters have shouted out the spell names when casting anyway.
Yeah I think the last one I played that did that was Skies of Arcadia, and it was awesome. I haven't picked up many recent RPGs, but I tried playing eternal sonata once but it was way too emo.
