A review by Ben_Random

Today I will be reviewing a Mario fan-game made with the Super Mario Brothers X development engine.
The review is split up into sections, Story, Gameplay, Graphics, Audio, and the Overall Rating.
Each section is rated with a THUMBS UP, THUMBS TO THE SIDE, or THUMBS DOWN. The game is also rated by the RMN 5 star system.
So without further ado, let's begin the review.

Well, we know that Bowser has captured Princess Peach. But other than that, there is no story at all to this game. For the platforming genre, the expectations are automatically lowered for story, but this game doesn't even make sense!

The game starts you off in Mario's house. If you exit the house there are two pipes, one you can only enter after beating all the levels (guess I'll never know what's in there), and the second leads to the hub. (The Ultimate Warp Zone).
The only story to this game is that Mario must collect all the stars in the Ultimate Warp Zone, and then he... wins?
I know I am being harsh on the story of this game, and a lot of mainstream plat-formers get away without a real plot, but I'm still going to give this game's story a thumbs down because, frankly, I've seen better stories in Mario platformers.

This games story is confusing and unclear.

This game's story get's a:
THUMBS DOWN

Wow. I hate the gameplay.

To my knowledge, there are 40 levels, each level containing a star, and each level placed in a world according to its difficulty and theme. And there are also 4 levels randomly scattered around the hub world. At least this was the goal.
I found many levels that were judged incorrectly when it came to difficulty, and I also found a desert level in the water world!

This games hub world is insane. I died more in the ultimate warp zone more than in the games levels! But trust me, that doesn't mean that I didn't die a lot in the levels. Each level in it self had good qualities, true, some were crappy as hell, but they all had good ideas. The problem I have is the way the game was put together. Some levels were 1 screen long, and some were 30. To solve this inconsistency, GRS could have asked for the levels to be a certain length. I know this wouldn't fix every instance of a level being to long of to short, but it would help. I also noticed many other inconsistencies. These were not within the levels themselves, but when all the levels were put together, the black magic began. In some levels, waterfalls were swimmable. In others, they weren't. This is just one example of what made me dislike this game.

I know right now you are reading this and saying, "Ben_Random is a B****! In a community game, there is no way to stop every single inconsistency."
This is true, but that doesn't mean you can't stop most of them. If you look at a game called Super Talking Time Bros., you can understand what I mean when I say that this game could have been put together better. In Super Talking Time Bros, a strict set of rules were put out, and this made the gameplay much more consistent from level to level.

This game plays inconsistently.

This game's gameplay get's a:
THUMBS DOWN

The graphics in this game clashed.

This game's graphics contains the defaults of Super Mario Bros. X. (Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3, & World), as well as some customs that aren't to shabby. Though, from level to level, this game's graphics clash. However, this being a community game, I can't really expect much graphical consistency.

This game's graphics get's a:
THUMBS TO THE SIDE

The audio for this game was nothing special, just a few customs and default tracks from Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 1,2, and 3.

This games audio get's a:
THUMBS TO THE SIDE

THUMBS DOWN

This game is annoying and at times unfair.

I recommend this game to fans of "Super Desmo Bros." (A game here on RMN)

Play the sequel. The sequel is slightly better. Slightly.

I wish I could review Super RMN Bros. 2, but I can't because I'm a developer.

I wish you could give it a scathing review also.

I don't think the sequel is even slightly better, honestly.
I really don't think this was bad unless you're just judging Davenport's levels.

I must have never played the infamous Red Coin stage. Or, if I did, I gave up on it much earlier than poor Brickroad did. If I knew the kind of craptastrophe I'd need to pull off for that stage, I'm sure I wouldn't have rated this as high as I did.

this review is pretty bullshit
"to short, to long, to hard, or to easy."
Proof that RMN needs a review editor.

Sorry for the crappy job on this review. I'll try to be more descriptive on my next one.
You spent more time in Paint doing your stupid logos and subheaders than you did proofreading your atrocious spelling and grammar. Here's a hint to get you started: "gets" doesn't need an apostrophe. EVER.

Second, if you honestly think this is "Kaizo" difficult, you suck at Mario games and probably shouldn't have been on the devteam for the sequel. Like, at all. I'm having more trouble with Lost Levels than I did with this game.

He's right about one thing: the game suffered from a difficult-to-navigate hub world and a lack of communication between devs. Beyond that, I thoroughly stand by my original comment here. Then again, based on Ben_Random's last post, no need to keep belaboring the point.
Ahhh! My Makerscore has gone down. You bastard.

Why does this game have so many downloads if everyone is in agreement with how "bad" this is? Am I missing something, or what?

yep!

It was featured in the SMBX splash screen for a few months after it's release. Thus EVERYONE who downloaded and used SMBX in that time saw a link for Super RMN Bros.
This isn't the first and only game to have a high download count that people openly and constantly regard as shit. RMN is a strange parallel universe where anything can happen!

Yeah, just like Michael Bay's movies!

As for the review it's... not good. You give a thumbs down for the story in a Super Mario collaborative game, for Christ's sake! You bash the clashing graphics (that are all part of the editor)... again, in a collaborative game! That's like complaining that there's no consistency at all in the ALEX games - it makes no sense. Same with the music - it's mostly tracks from the various Mario games that were included in the editor, how can you even judge this? But yeah, they used music from Mario in a Mario game, what nerve!

But the worst part is the gameplay section. In a non-Twilight Zone review this would be the part that is the most fleshed out, with the author going into detail why this game fails as a whole and delivers a frustrating experience... NOT IN THIS REVIEW. Your whole criticism of the level design is as follows: too short, too long, too hard, too easy. What's next, stating: "I didn't like the game because it was bad. */*****"?

I give this review:

Please don't write any more reviews until you have something, ANYTHING to say about the game you're reviewing.
I'm not sure why everybody is so upset over one little stupid review. I mean, yeah, this review is pretty badly done and really doesn't deserve the single star, IMO. But you know what? It's Mr. Ben_Random's humble opinion and if he thinks this game blows hard ass, then that's his opinion and blows hard ass! Even with the huge amount of downloads, your going to get the odd person who doesn't like a game because of a few things that the person, in particular, doesn't really enjoy, and that's fine. I agree with Ben_Random's opinion about this game, but not with this review. Because it's a colab Mario game made in SMBX, the game should probably score a lot higher because a lot of people worked on it together for the sake of having fun and creating some weird stages using Mario stuff, but meh.

Okay, a single star review, time to move on to more important things, guys. Like...making Super RMN Bros. 3??? :D

He has all the right to think the game sucks donkey balls, but he could've simply posted a comment on the game page instead of writing something that tries to resemble an imitation of a review that drags the game's score down and gobbles up people's makerscore (some care about it, you know).

I blame the staff member who accepted this piece of crap instead of telling Ben to revise it. Repeatedly.
