Sacred Reviews: Ambassador to Earth

Intro

"Ambassador to Earth" will represent my final foray into suzuricho's game submissions to this site. This isn't because the demo for this project is so awful that I've sworn off playing the rest of her stuff, but because this demo is the only thing she's submitted that has an official page that I haven't covered already.

At any rate "Ambassador to Earth" is a turn-based RPG that began development in 2008 and whose development eventually came to a halt. Though why development stopped isn't exactly clear. Admittedly the last blog post for this project mentions suzuricho having issues getting certain functions to work. So this project may have died because suzuricho wasn't willing to reduce the project down to something that was a bit more manageable. At any rate any word on how development was going ended in early November of 2010. And a few months after that blog post she lamented her various games in February of 2011 in one of the forum topics.

I'm disappointed with myself right now. I go back to play my old games and I hang my head in shame.

Sadly she completely disappeared after that. And it doesn't even look like anyone in the thread she posted this in even responded to her comment which just makes a sad story even sadder.

Story
Summary
You play as the daughter of an alien princess whose half human whose recently been saved by her mother's former personal bodyguard after her house was set a blaze, but before that happened your mother died in a terrorist attack a week ago and your father ran off to commit suicide in order to join her in the afterlife. At any rate it appears tensions are running high between various factions in your mother's home system over who will represent the system in the Galactic Federation. A dispute that is likely to go hot if a suitable ambassador isn't found soon. Which is where our heroine is likely going to come in. At least she would if the game had gotten past her being brought before her grandparents.

Weaknesses

Due to eventing issues you can see certain sections of the story out of order which makes figuring out what you need to do rather difficult. A good example of this is in the park where you can talk to your best friend in a location she hasn't even arrived at yet so she's invisible until the conversation is basically over.

And while this conversation does give you somewhere to go. Those events won't properly trigger until you've dealt with your first meeting with her which is triggered by you interacting with your mother's grave. And your not even told to do that by the game since it directs you towards going to school. Though your not allowed to do that until you've visited the porcelain throne and made a deposit.

Another issue is that the game really loves repeating certain details. Admittedly these details are usually being told to a character that is out of the loop, but the sheer amount of times you get told your mom died and that she was a baker is so high you might need to use fingers on both of your hands to keep track of it. And while this stuff being brought up occasionally over the course of a longer game would be okay in my opinion. This demo is only around 90 minutes long and is basically stuffed to the brim with dialogue. So the player is presented with very little to do beyond reading walls of text.

Strengths

There are hints that suzuricho's usual style of jokes were going to be present. Though if those appeal to you or not will depend on if you find sex and natural body functions funny.

Gameplay

Combat wise the game features the standard turn-based combat system that comes with RPG Maker VX. As such I don't have a lot to say about the combat in terms of mechanics. On the other hand the game's combat balance is definitely off kilter with some enemies in the early game being laughably weak while others are excessively dangerous. For example you can easily smack down the slimes that appear in the first real combat area of the game like you might swat a fly, but you can also run into spiders that can easily tear your team apart.

Another issue that pops up if you end up a brawler is that you'll learn dual attack at level three. This is an issue since this move can be cast for free and essentially just gives the player access to a superior normal attack since this move delivers two blows to a chosen target. Though how you become a brawler or not is a bit of a mystery to me since your class is determined by how you respond to a few questions posed to you by a priestess.

Graphics and Sound

As far as I'm aware the bulk of the assets in this demo are pulled from the RTP. Admittedly this is a demo so they may have been intended to be placeholder assets, but I suppose we'll never truly know for certain.

Conclusion

"Ambassador to Earth" is a bit of a mess in it's current state. Unfortunately it's probably never going to get better considering the developer disappeared over a decade ago. So the likelihood she'll come back and finish this project is rather slim. As such, I'd really only recommend this for people looking for a short project to review since it only takes around 80 to 90 minutes to get through the demo. Though that assumes you at least partially luck into finding the correct sequence for leaving Earth.
