Beautiful Graphics, No Escape

"Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer" is a very sick and bloody RPG Maker 2003 short game which is about the topic of torture.

Story:
Somewhere out there, in the deep deep depths of the internet, there is a cruel, sick and insane community... no its name is not RRR, but ''The Dungeoneers''. Its members like to lure innocent people into their cellars to torture them the creative way. While doing so they record all the pain to upload it to the site. Members watch the videos, talk about them and also review.
So does Verge, the protagonist of this game. He is a beginner in making those little movies. Besides that he does look up to and even love a female friend of him named Daily who is a very appreciated member of the community.

Interesting and innovative story idea. The only thing that seems a little bit unbelievable is the fact that nobody does really do anything against that community, because it is considered fake.

Gameplay:
You have to go onto the streets trying to charm other people to get them into your dungeon. It is a little bit like ''The Sims''. You have the choice between 3 different answers and when you have won the person's sympathy, you have to pick the final correct answer to play the dungeon torture.

Although being very cruel and brutal the game contains black humour too.

Before doing so you can get some utensils from a shop to make the show more interesting for the viewers.
In the dungeon you can place the stuff you received before. Next the victim is freed and tries to flee through the dungeon corridor stepping into your placed tools one after another. You can either kill him at the end or break his hope to bring the show to an end. The goal is that it is done creatively and not too quickly. The victim should not escape though or it is Game Over. In your house you can check the ratings for your current video on the PC and check your mailbox.

Gore!!!

You can travel to different places in town by using the map. It is a little bit weird to navigate on it, but after some time you know the ways. A much bigger problem is that you can only save at home on your PC. That's very annoying and I myself hacked the game to enable the save option.
Also it is disturbing to place the items in the dungeon, because you have to go back into the corner again and again to get a new one. It would have been better, if you could place them by using the number keys.

Graphics:
The color style of this game is tremendous. Reminds of ''Sin City'' again which I really love. The facesets are photo rips. Not the best way to do it, but since this game was made in 2 weeks it was an efficient choice I guess.
The map design is awesome. The character style is a custom one.

So the only thing that can be criticized is that the sprites are the only thing that is really self-made while the rest are rips and color edits. But I really care less.

Sound:
In my opinion music with vocals should not be used in games. Instead search for midis or use instrumental versions. The music itself fits very well but the vocals are annoying. Though the music that is played in the final dungeon sequence made me laugh.
The sound effects are funny and fitting too. Nothing more to say about them.

This is one of the most innovative, creative, funny, bloody, interesting, good looking... so best RM short games I have ever played. If you like movies like the ''Saw'' series this is THE game for you to play!
The whole idea absolutely would have been worth making a longer game out of it. Although it already has a lot of content for a game made in 2 weeks.

I really appreciate this review. I can only thank the nice things you said. About the critiques/suggestions... all I have to say is that I deliberately made some gameplay choices that I know might annoy the player a bit and slow down the game, like a slower walking speed, single save point, having to walk back and forth in the dungeon to place tiles, etc. But they were deliberate. For instance, I like the idea of having the player take his time to set up the dungeon, do it with care, because it should heighten the cruelty in a way. Though this is a short game, it's not meant to be played in a rush, it's suppose to be a immersive experience, so those things weren't accidents. But I don't really disagree with anything you said. Thanks again!

Also, I don't know if you got this, but you don't always have to kill the victim. If you bring his health and will levels very low, you can let him escape, in which case you get a beautiful escape.

Btw, your review images look better in the dark background. :D

Also, I don't know if you got this, but you don't always have to kill the victim.

That's why I asked if there are different endings if you let one or another live... e.g. the brother. Or the final victim (I let her alive).

I let one person alive, but there was no ''beautiful escape'' though...

That option was a nice thing, but it would have been nicer, if it has some effects.

For instance, I like the idea of having the player take his time to set up the dungeon, do it with care, because it should heighten the cruelty in a way.

I believe the player would do it with more care if he could place the traps more quickly... because he could do changes quicker too.

calunio, is the first screenshot something you change?

BTW, I more or less agree with this review with regard to some of the particulars. The thing I don't contend with is its bottom line.
I think Buddy was in the version I sent you, edchuy. He appears when you go back to the airport.

What do you mean by not contending with the bottom line?

Could I have missed him in the beta? Anyway, I'll eventually replay the final release.

I basically agree with the conclusion of this review, although I haven't seen "Saw".

Stop spamming. And no, a double post never happened to me on RMN 3.0 so far. So don't blame the site. Blame yourself. B-)
