What's with the "sneak attack" vids?

So, randomly, I Googled "matsumori days". Looky at what I found:

RPGSnapshot 03 - Matsumori Days Episode 1
RPGSnapshot 03 - Matsumori Days Episode 2

I've not seen either of these videos as of yet, and will be putting them into the "Media" tab for all to see and gloat on how much fail I am. That's how that tab is supposed to work, after all. But, really, am I the only one who thinks that doing a review/let's play/whatever without notifying the maker of it's existence is kinda... weird?

To be fair, they aren't even giving it a chance... Kinda impossible to call it a review. And the voices, the freaking voices, they are definitely gonna haunt me tonight.

In all honesty, it doesn't look half bad to me! :)

weird, huh?

someone must have submitted your game to them??

PS: Those voices were very unnerving haha
Yeah the whole thing is unwatchable. Beavis and Butthead were at least entertaining.

That's not so bad, It actually makes it pretty lively to have them act it out (somewhat!); I wouldn't be surprised if it made people want to play the game, though obviously they're skipping through it.

People do this all the time actually. I got a review once and didn't find out until six months afterwards.

Personally speaking, the description was enough for me to know that the game would be absolutely hated on. I haven't quite gotten the heart to watch it yet, but I know I probably should at some point. Even if the video is a total joke.

Anyway, the description says that I borrow everything, which is basically true: I use the VX RTP for the graphics, and I'm seriously all over the place with the music. However, when it's mentioned how the plot was unoriginal, I suspected that the dialog was totally skipped over to get to what was thought to be the more interesting parts of the game. I don't know why that choice was made, particularly when I say that the game is a story-based RPG on the gamepage, but that's the prerogative of the player.
People get used to playing games and not giving feedback to the people who made them. That's how it works with commercial games.
Hey, this is Kirran, LordMoonstone, whatever, one of the guys from Snapshot. First and foremost, we shoot to try and be entertaining. Not a legit review. We skip through the text because if people want to play it, they'll read it themselves. We try to showcase what the game has to offer within a reasonable time limit.

We are fully aware that most of the story is missed if we skip through the text, but since these are all free games and we put the links to get them in the description, we hope that people will make their own decision based on what we show. Sure we'll poke fun because we don't want it to be boring. We also did a pretty bad job at that, too. It's just for fun. Don't take much of what we say too seriously since it has very little ground to stand on.

That said, if you want some legitimate feedback, I know I'm not opposed to sitting down and saying what I felt could be improved. Feel free to let me know if that's the case.

I'm not opposed to hearing legitimate feedback, and this offer to hear your unfiltered opinion is welcome! Shall we take this to PMs, or is there another method of communication you would prefer?

Side note: Now I feel like I have to watch both episodes to have an understanding of where you're coming from, even if it's filtered through the need for showmanship/entertainment value.

*Edit: Though, now that I think of it, I might want to take a rain-check with this idea. I feel like I'm spreading myself a bit thin with being involved in the RMN Summer Games (that end at the end of the month), on top of being a beta-tester for another game here, and also attempting to respond with intelligence, grace, and maturity to this.

They made fun of your game to entertain others. Avgn does the same. Don't take it too personal. Just learn from this and make sure you don't repeat the same mistakes in the future.

If the point was to entertain others at my expense, or rather, my game's expense, fine. I can, eventually, learn to deal with that. As for not making the same mistakes, who knows? Personally speaking, the one thing that brings the game down from a four-star game to a three-star game (if I was able to review my own game, anyway) is the forced grinding/combat that the game asks of players.

*Edit: Looking at my current RPG-making attempt, I'm still making that "mistake". Slow learner, I guess?

If your game gets targeted as a joke by other people, it's never a good sign. Either way, I think you've said yourself that Matsumori Days wasn't up to your own expectations.

I'm not opposed to hearing legitimate feedback, and this offer to hear your unfiltered opinion is welcome!
Would you like to read my unfiltered opinion?

Well here it is:

Well, it all depends what you mean by ''mistake''. I don't mean to hurt your feelings but I really struggled to play the game over 10 minutes :(.

*Investing some time and effort to create your own graphics would certainly help as opposed to use those character generators you had. Again, I don't mean to hurt you but I saw your title screen for your ''Weird Dreams'' game and I was like ''Oh come on!''. I was under the impression that you did it in less than 5 minutes. I don't know, I would recommend taking more time to do things. You've mentioned working too fast, it might be because you're rushing. Honestly, if you posted that title screen at Oniromancie, it would probably end up being a ''joke screen''.

*Another thing that comes to mind is to look at old snes rpg games for mapping references as the map I saw were pretty empty.

*Having a plot that hooks the player right away would also be a good thing. I still remember wandering the halls aimlessly and it wasn't fun.

*I'd also spend more time on character design. None of the characters from what I've played of the game were memorable. Then again, I didn't play the game for a long time but none of them ''stuck'' so to speak. This is about the point I'm the less certain of as it's possible that your characters would have really grown on me after a while.

*I know you're sensitive about your games (to some extent, we all are) so you'll probably brush away what I've written as a personal attack which would suck because I think you're quite a cool member.

*I don't think you're a slow learner. I just think you *maybe* have a conception about game design which might not appeal to a lot of people (which is fine).

I agree with most of your points, Creation. Here's some considerations:

My best attribute, I think, is my writing. Maybe Matusmori Days doesn't quite cater to that strength, and maybe Weird Dreams doesn't either. All I know is that if I see an "easy way out" as far as graphics are concerned, I'll probably take it. Hence, the title screen of Weird Dreams. Though, to be bluntly honest, I thought the title screen for Weird Dreams was at least passable. So that shows you how much I still have to learn about how to make custom graphics!

I'm thinking I should take a good look at Final Fantasy VI, Treasure of the Rudra, and Earthbound for mapping references. Not that I expect to map at that quality any time soon, but actually looking at the maps, getting a feel for how they were made, might be helpful.

Maybe I rush with the development of Weird Dreams because I'm of the belief that if I don't do something "now", the inertia caused by that spark of inspiration will die down, never to return? Who knows? Anyway, that's a consideration that's best placed elsewhere, methinks. Like a blog post for Weird Dreams, perhaps!

Not a legit review.

I figured as much considering a bunch of it was just... strange..
