Corvallis Unruh is a young pacifist from a small coastal town. He spends his days working for the local pharmaceutical distributor and taking his daily pain medication, even though he's not sure he's actually in pain.

One night, his world is upended when a huge creature tears his family's house apart, sending him on an adventure that he's pretty sure he doesn't want to be on with a companion who he's pretty sure doesn't want him there. Along the way, his companion, Angela, brings other people into the fold - a mercenary, a professional adventurer, a nobleman, and a sorcerer - but Corvallis is always alone. And he knows it.

People who want to curry favor with Corvallis tell him that he's some sort of Chosen One, but they fail, every time, to tell him that he's been chosen to be a cog in a political machine with a thirst for profit. And where there is no money, there is only bloodletting.

Alcarys Complex has been Greenlit!

Hi. Just poking my head in here to let you know that Alcarys Complex has emerged from the Steam Greenlight furnace victorious. I am currently in the process of filing the paperwork with Valve to become a Steam partner so I can get the ball rolling.

I'd like to thank everybody for the support that allowed it to come this far, whether you backed here, bought a copy directly from me, got it in a bundle, or bought a copy at a trade show or convention. I like to think that this in some way validates my persistent maintenance on the game. It's hard to believe I've been doing this for two years and some change, with more stuff to come.

So, here's a quick primer on what's going to happen and how:

When's the Steam version of Alcarys Complex coming out?

As you may (or may not know), Alcarys Complex is a game that is a couple years old. It has also been undergoing persistent maintenance and improvements, and this will continue for a while. The current released version is 1.03, but this isn't the version that's going to launch on Steam.

Alcarys Complex will be getting its first major feature update, version 1.1, no later than the end of the first half of 2015. The Steam version of AC will be this version of the game.

What are you waiting for?

The delay is mostly to give the Steam version a rigorous testing period on all platforms and to provide certain essential features that 1.03 doesn't have, like Steamworks integration and true widescreen.

Who is entitled to Steam keys?

Making your purchase through the following venues entitles you to a Steam key:

  • Kickstarter
  • Groupees' Be Mine 13 Bundle
  • Indie Royale Debut 16 Bundle
  • Direct purchase through modestarcade.com
  • Digital purchase on Desura
  • Digital purchase on itch.io
  • Physical purchase at any Modest Arcade trade show table

When will we get our Steam keys?

You'll get your keys when 1.1 drops.

What features will the Steam version of the game include?

Cloud saves, for sure. I'm also considering including cloud saves in the DRM-free version of the game, but we'll have to wait and see. Other than that, I'll make decisions about what features are and aren't appropriate closer to 1.1. I'll definitely need to make some of these decisions with the assistance of a Steam account manager.

If you have any questions I haven't covered here, feel free to ask them. Anyway, have a good day.

This looks promising, graphically better than most game maker games. I also like the idea of a game focusing more on story than battles. Although as a result perhaps you could give a little more info about the story in the description? Either way I'll be watching this.
yeah, sorry about that! i elaborated (somewhat) in the description and added a character page. thanks!
So I'm just playing this RPG made in game maker with cute graphics made by Ocean, not really paying attention to the dialogue too much then in the middle of some battle tutorial... the girl in pink starts dropping f-bombs like its GTA or something. I was thrown off completely, is this town like some bad hood or something? I actually don't understand the world either.
angela's very vulgar - to the point where certain other people in the game notice and question her about it. but i made sure to have none of the main or minor story characters actually swear (the closest corvallis gets to any swear word is 'heck') to contrast angela with everyone else. there's a reason for her profanity, i promise!

as far as the world goes, that's my fault. this demo starts at scene 9 in the script. scenes 1-8 contain dialogue that describes the state of the world. these scenes are pretty story-heavy, and i wanted to get people right into the battle system, so i cut them for the demo. maybe this was a mistake.

Cool, it's up! I need to play it all through sometime, I didn't quite finish it before.
i really want to play this game. but my graphics card can't handle it. :(((( stupid alpha blending.
This looks sweet. All the graphics are custom? If not, it still looks great but if so, then kudos to you guys.

Try unplugging your gamepad or joystick from your computer. I had the same problem and that was the cause; once it was unplugged I could use the keyboard to start the game by pressing 'C'.

However, I couldn't get the command menu to pop up no matter what key I pressed, so I couldn't switch which party member was the lead member. I kept pressing A, S, D, and every other key and the command menu wouldn't show. If it's not supposed to be accessible until later in the game, then you should mention that in the manual, Pasty.

This game is intriguing though. I'm eagerly waiting for it's completion. I've got high expectations for this one.
yeah, ginseng and i got that fixed through PM some time ago. if anyone has any issues like that, feel free to post on the gamepage and i can help you out. if it's something particularly egregious like a freeze bug, i might do a minor bugfix release but honestly all my time has gone to the full copy of the game. keep an eye out for QA opportunities - they're coming really soon.

as far as the command menu goes, in the demo, you should be able to open it up as soon as you leave town. you're right when you say that it should be in the manual, though - there's a fair amount of time invested in setting up the plot and familiarizing the player with the game that elapses before this demo starts, and almost all of it is UI-limited. so expect that to be addressed in the new manual.

i appreciate your comments and hope that i can live up to your expectations.
I recommend this game, Pasty handled some things very well in this game. I'd love to sit down and write about it in the near future instead of just a quick blurb. Have to beat the game though for a full review :S.

But yeah, the demo is pretty long and it's not like you have anything better to do... Get the game.

P.S: Art is cool beans, the soundtrack is phenomenal!
thanks, man! sorry to be late with this (very very busy)
