Bowser has stolen the Princess (*gasp*) and taken her to his MOON BASE....IN SPACE! However, Mario will have to make his way through the Block Plains, past the Pirate Cove, across the Ancient Desert, over the Jungle Gorge and up Pandora Mountain to get there!

This game is a collaborative effort between Solitayre, GreatRedSpirit, Hexatona and kentona.

A special thanks goes out to Deckiller, Max McGee and ShortStar for play testing (and Deckiller for a guest level!).

This game requires the SMBX engine to play. Please download the engine from here:
DOWNLOAD

-Extract the 'Mario vs The Moon Base' folder into SMBX's Worlds folder.
-Start SMBX and select Start Game.
-From SMBX's menu go One/Two Player and select Mario vs the Moon Base from the scenarios list.

Thanks for playing!

Online Play

I just found a guide for how to connect to other people and play this game cooperatively online. It is amazingly complicated and unintuitive, just like everything else in SMBX.

I just have to know, has anyone tried or done this? I'm really interested to know if it works. If anyone manages to get this to work, post here and let us know about it! I think it would be really cool (and likely game-breaking!) for people to be able to play Moon Base together.

Wow, the Lifeline level is annoyingly frustrating. I probably suck, but I feel there's way too much time between save points or too much going on and not enough safe spots. Is it possible to have more than 1 save point in a level? Some places really need it. Otherwise it ends up being "Go for a while dodging bullets while avoiding enemies while not stepping on the spikes while avoiding the explosions while jumping platform to platform while the screen scrolls" and it really becomes a pain redoing a level like that. You guys seem to love your auto screen scrolling. Not all the levels of course, some of them I might have lost a life or a few in but are not bad at all.
It is not possible to have more than one checkpoint in a level, unfortunately. (and I think I was the one with the obsession with autoscrolling)

Lifeline is probably the hardest level (imho) - I died so many times.
To be fair Lifeline's water physics can really suck. It's possible to get trapped 'leaving' the water when it's moving down which turns your mobility down to about zero. I never found the perfect speed and rate to eliminate that issue and have the pipe move at a not-molasses speed but I did my best to minimize it.

Besides that the stage is still hard but the pipe is big and Mario with some momentum is a fast swimmer. It's possible to skip parts of the stage (see the "pipe is moving up/down and you need to go into this alcove and wait for the pipe to get in the right place again before you can move on") by moving fast. The original ending to the stage (bowser statues and a narrow escape with two piranha plants) wasn't fair though but that's since been revised.

*edit*
For me, I'd say Lunar Eclipse is the hardest level in the game. Well, the second half of the stage at least. The platforming is tough with constant pressure from platforms and fire spitters and it gets pretty narrow at times. Then the level gimmick means while doing all that you need to keep track of just where the fireballs are in your head for the half second you can't see them so they don't pop out under your feet. There is a way to skip most of that if you're observant though.
Great game! One of the best platformers since "Invasion".
I played all the way to the final boss.
Lots of custom graphics in many locations including
Music from DK. The Moon landscape was expertly designed and
the space levels had a unique underwater theme.

WHO is responsible for Lunar Eclipse? DEAR LORD.

EDIT: After reading GRS' comment, I promptly found a much-desired solution.
Funny Story: Nobody but myself and Deckiller beat the original version of Lunar Eclipse. The used version is after it's been toned down twice.

I'm not very good at balancing Mario levels :v

I spent at least half of the development cycle yelling at everyone about how difficult their levels were. If you think Lunar Eclipse is hard you guys should have seen the original version of Ascension. *shudders*

Haha, yeah. It's all about being a l33t platformer XD
I'm probably gonna review this if I ever get at least relatively close to the end ;)
It's a good thing Game Overs aren't so bad in SMBX or I'd never make it anywhere.
Love this game, wish I was better at mario :/
I'm on world 5 now. The castle in world 4, Pipe Nightmare, can SUCK MY DICK. But really loving this game now that I have a working gamepad to play it with!!

I must really suck at Mario games. I can't even beat the first level, Blocklands. I can't seem to get to jump over the huge gap after the save point.

Here is a video of me playing the into + blocklands. maybe it'll help you out!

I don't know what's wrong in my version. No matter how much I run or at which point I press jump, the speed isn't enough to get over the gap.

I did not find the levels difficult, though there were some points where I felt it could have been more carefully playtested. Jumps that required overly precise timing and speed, that sort of thing. IMO, platformers should pretty much always allow for an extra 25% margin of error in terms of placement of platforms.

To be honest, the more difficult aspect was the ass physics engine of SMBX. :P

So I discovered there was a run button. Now this game is really hooking. I've encountered a few glitches also, but already forgot where they were. :( Some included being able to have turtle shell bounce back and forth in area where was infinite goomba spawn. This resulted to being able to collect as much 1UPs as you wanted. I think it was some of the first 6 maps or so.

Yeah I got this to happen for me, too. I wouldn't call it a glitch, as actual mari games had things like this happen, though I'd say it was a bit too easy to make happen.
You need those 1ups for Lunar Eclipse.
Dying is such a non-issue with SMBX. If you game over you just resume from the level you died on except you need to get the checkpoint again and you start with three lives. Getting an easy 99 lives just means you don't need to deal with small stuff life that and if we could remove lives I would've pushed for it.

(plus you'll need lives for The Moon, it's a bit tricky)
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

INCREDIBLE MS PAINT FANART.

I am apparently incapable of drawing Mario.
