Announcement

Future of this game? Null. Maybe.

So, I'd been working on this game on the quiet for a while and had gotten pretty far (at least another hour of play). I'd fixed some of the stuff mentioned in reviews, replayed it a few times to best identify problem points, added some extra stuff so that you couldn't leave town without another character, added a little more of the main story and just touched up things - got rid of the edits of others and added my own instead.

However, when I moved computer a few months ago I lost all my VX games, including this one. I'm not sure how - I was positive that I'd copied them all over to the backup drive but when it came time to move them to the new computer, they just weren't there.

Having lost so much progress (coupled with the fact that MV is coming out soon and that Ace is miles better as an engine) really put a downer on my desire to tinker with the game and I've not even bothered to redownload the game.

Will it stay that way? Maybe. Maybe not. I might redownload it and fix some of the more pertinent issues eventually, though I doubt I'll be actually making it a full game. Sorry guys. For what it's worth, I have learned a lot from making this game, mostly about battle balance and editing. It's given me a lot of experience and though it will probably be remembered as a pretty unbalanced game, it helped me a lot to make something so unbalanced and difficult. Sometimes we learn the most from the things we fuck up. ^.^

Frankly, I'm mostly upset about some of the edits I made, which I hadn't had the time to copy elsewhere.

New download uploaded

Yeah, so taking into account what feedback I've had I decided to post up a revised demo. It's about as long as the last one though there's been a few changes. For one, battles are better balanced and no longer random encounters. For two, well, the intro has changed a little.

It's not much but it's something. So, let me know what you all think, okie?

Of shfting grass and questing scripts

Currently I've been focussing on mapping out the Meras mountains a bit more. Caves are fun, as are underground lakes. Heights, however, are not, especially when they don't match or when auto tile messes with your 'boundaries'. An important part of using the auto tiles is to make sure that they don't mess up your heights. Even placing a grass tile next to a wall without being careful can result in a wall with no lines.
Thank God for the SHIFT button! <3

Speaking of grass, I find myself annoyed with how the grass tile being placed next to a water tile results in a thin line of dirt. Then if I want a longer grass tile next to a water tile I have to create a mock-up tile of the grass edge I want before shift-placing. It makes the whole mapping process longer than should be necessary. Still, them's the breaks if you want to work with VX.

I'll keep at it, though my progress has hit a bit of a low at the moment. I'm also looking for a type of script that will allow me to make a sort of quest board where you choose a quest to accept, do the quest and when you come back to the 'guild' gain the rewards and delete the quest, adding a new one in its place. Sure, I realise it can be done 'manually', but with as many quests as Incarnation is bound to have a script would make things so much easier. I'll be keeping an eye out for one like it in the meantime, though.

Of Mounts and well, cameos

So let me just say that with this project I'm going to try and keep up to date blog-wise, meaning that there are gonna be quite a few updates. Well, that's my aim anyway. I'm hoping to fly through this project quite fast and considering I started it two weeks ago now, I think I'm doing pretty good so far. For me, anyway.

My plan is to get the mapping out of the way first, then most database things (like extra items, skills, monsters and whatnot) and scripts, then the quests and lastly the story part of the game. Why set it out like this? Well, I've noticed that when I start a project with the intent of it being small it usually ends up quite large and convoluted because I keep adding new things to the storyline. Thus I've only given myself the general idea of the four plots - a few places I'll need to map and ideas for quests - but that's it. And I won't be dealing with plot points until after everything else so I'll have already completed the No Plots Here one and have three left.

Now as to what I've done lately?

I've been messing around with some of the scripts and customising them some more - which is kinda fun really. I've also added a new dungeon - the Meras Mountain, Cliffs of Faith - a mountain trail that is infested with all manner of nasty critters and brave pilgrims alike. It's looking pretty good so far though the layers and autotiles are a bit annoying at times. Did I say a bit annoying? I meant majorly annoying. It's one of the things I really hate about VX - it trying to be so friendly but falling flat on its figurative face.

Meras Mountain - The Cliffs of Faith

Despite that it's coming along well. I've also added a new 'system' where you learn spells from items - sure, 2K3 had that built in but you need a script for it in VX. Still, I've got it up and running mostly. Just need to find a way to stop magic spells from being learnt by those with no Mana - though I suppose it's like Katt learning Bolt X in Breath of Fire II - find a way to boost her AP and she can become a spell caster as well as a whacker of all things ebil. Actually, considering Health Nuts and Mana Nuts give their respective Maximum Raises to the whole party, never mind. It works the same way as a skill given to a mage, I suppose.

Last but not least, I require cameos. Give me your idea for an NPC of yourself and I'll slot it in somewhere. If you've an RTP-style VX sprite that you'd like as a representation then add that too. If not, you can just answer these:

Name -
Gender -
Race - (you can choose either human, elven, Nyu (cat person - usually warriors, berserkers, fighters), Gyu (think kobolds - usually rangers, trackers, infantry) or Usa (rabbit people - usually miners, teachers, writers).
Distinguished looks? General description of your persona.
Job - From guards to gardeners.
Personality -
Anything else - Quest idea/a line you want to say/shop/item giver?

If anyone wants to be an elemental, let me know, but there will only be a few NPC elementals all up so first come first served. Also, what type of element (Ice, fire, water, wind, earth, thunder, light, dark or neutral)?
