Open World in Review

Note: Despite what I wrote below for the description of this video, I'm not actually cancelling this project, its more along the lines of...would anyone actually be interested in it?
It has been over a year since I touched this project and coming back, I am more discouraged than ever. I have a ton of work poured into this game and I've been slowly plugging away at it for over 10 years. Yes, that's right, 10 years. Sure it isn't the same form it was when I first started, in fact, this is its third iteration; however it'll be the one that sticks.
Regardless, I'm trying to sift through the code and figure out how the heck I did certain things and what I was thinking when coding others. It is a tiresome process trying to rethink my original thought patterns and in the end, I am not sure if what I'm building is even any good. If anyone would even be remotely interested in playing this.
To sum it up, its basically a grind-fest; however you have a whole world to explore straight from the start, 70+ quests to complete, some intermingled with guild quest lines or the main story and many others just simple or complex sidequests. There are plenty of mini-games finished and/or planned and tons of things to do and see. Despite it being a grindfest, there is plenty for you to do here. There is a story, albeit it a simple one; there is deep characters, but you gotta stick with it through multiple playthroughs to discover the hidden depths of all 8 characters. And finally, there are multiple variations on the ending based on your choices.
A lot of stuff went into the planning and execution of this RPG, but looking at what I have left to do, I'm a bit disheartened. There is nothing overtly special or unique separating it from the big mass of quality RPGs already out there on the RPGMaker market. So is it even worth continuing on with my project? Is it worth the hassle? I still have a ton more left to do and it might be a year yet before we see even a beta release. Sure, the maps are almost done, but after that, its event city with setting up all the quests, NPCs and mini-games. Its a tall order for one person and I'd like to know if its going to be worth doing at all.
So tell me your opinion of what you see here. Would this be something you'd like to see finished? Should I finish it, even though it isn't anything fancy or groundbreaking? Do you want another free game to kill time in? Please let me know your thoughts. The future of this project may depend on it. Thank You.

I'd recommend reading this. It's not always about making something radically unique; what matters is if you enjoy what you're doing.

If it seems like a daunting task, you might consider trimming the fat a bit. Do you really need half the stuff you have to realize the game's full potential? Maybe you'd benefit from tossing the thought of working on it for a decade aside and start fresh in your own mind? That's what I did with Tales from Zilmurik and I can tell you that it did wonders for my creativity because I'm not bogged down by the continuous "make it better than it used to be, you owe it to yourself after all this time, no exceptions".

While it may feel good to get at least one person to come up and say "I like what you do", ultimately it falls on whether or not you're willing to see something like this through to the end or if you think you'd feel better starting something new.

Either way, whatever happens, share it. You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you let this fade away.

You just can't let all this good stuff fade away!
You owe it to yourself and your own creation to finish it :)

I know how you feel, I feel the same way about my projects, why keep going? By now it's been done before and will anyone even play it?

Heck, the other day a new project popped up in RMN using the same base idea for a project I've been doing for a few years, that's discouraging!
It was no plagiarism though, since that person had no way of knowing about my project.

But it's still worth it!
If you've made some good stuff (and I know you did, just looking at your great maps!) then you can't let it go to waste.

All games, even if similar, have a different "flavour". That's how they all stand out in their own way.

Someone will play it and enjoy it, plus if you got this far it's because you enjoyed doing it, and that's all it takes. :)

I hope you finish it! ;)

Dude, finish it if you can!

Even if it's a rushed ending just work at it. :)
well I've decided to finally finish it. After all I'm so close to finishing the entire world (Terraco Caves and final main story area). So if I complete those and then start on events and quests and NPCs, then I think I 'could' have this out within a year. That's being hopeful though. But don't expect it before 2016 however, that would TRULY be a miracle.

Didn't notice this blog post until now. I'm definitely interested in seeing this released and I'm cheering for you!

Being innovative isn't the only value worth considering. You've clearly put a tremendous amount of effort in this and I guarantee you that it will definitely manage to entertain and inspire other people.
I've been going to this site for a few years now and this post made me finally decide to make an account for the sole purpose of telling you that if nothing I would be looking forward to seeing what you made in the span of TEN years very much.

My apologies if this message isn't the best I'm not so good with words just know that I'm on your side and have a great day.
Gah! That makes me feel both good and bad at the same time.
Good because people are still wanting to see my open world concept for the RPG and what I've created.
Bad because people think that after 10 years it'll be something awesome and I can't meet those expectations!
I'm slowly working on this, rest assured. I may ask for an alpha release testing team. Meaning, no real gameplay outside of exploring, fighting monsters and buying from shops. (Basically Dragon Quest/Warrior 1 but without the story)
Then the beta after that will actually have all the events and such. What are your thoughts for that testing schedule?

Well, I played Land of Dreams about a decade ago and I enjoyed it, thats surely the main reason I am reading this post. Anyway, dont get frightened by expectations: fans of your games dont kill themselves even if this turned out to be terrible. :) If you need some testing, count me in, just I will do it in my spare time (that is really scarce). :)
Okay, I've been recently plugging away at this and I'm making good progress on Terraco Caves. I want to finish that up, the Vorindae Dream map and the final area of the game. Once that's finished, I'll open this up for alpha testing (since its far from being a beta!). You'd basically just be wandering the overworld, fighting monsters, looting chests, recruiting one-dimensional (for now) class-based characters at inns and....that's about it. You're basically making sure all my maps are solid, no walk-thru errors and all chests/monster parties are working and doable/beatable. After this milestone, I'll slowly start on the intro story sequence, and then get cracking on the main quest storyline events. Once that's done, then its the arduous task of scripting every NPC, every sidequest....every mini-game....every....you get the idea. Still a far way off.
ahaa just saw this game today, good luck on it! It's looking pretty sweet ^^b
and maybe i could alpha test, who knows >>
Oof, looking back on this...still discouraged and real life kicking my ass even more these days. I still don't know if I'm going to be having time to get back to this and if/when I do, if interest will even be there or people are going to bother using rm2k3 by the time it's released... It hurts seeing this much work wasting away.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I've been subscribed to this for ages, and I'm still definitely interested.
We've all had our low points with making our games, but that sounds horrible. Take your time, and don't force creativity. If RPG Maker feels like work - then don't do it. There's no rule on how long your break should be.

RPG Maker 2003 is a stubborn engine, it just won't die. So I wouldn't worry about that, I still play and love games made with it.
Ditto. You tag this as Completed, and you'll have at least this player.

aww....guys...you make me cry... ;3;
Well, we have a new interesting wrinkle too, I got a new computer, because the current one is BSOD quite often now and rm2k3 isn't working well or at all on the new computer, so I gotta use it on the old, aging computer.

Also when I click on one map after viewing another, it 'innocently' reduces the previous map I JUST VIEWED to a standard 20x15 blue screen of blankness. I don't realize this until I accidently save and click back and it's permanently saved like that, losing ALL progress on that map! I've never seen a bug like this before and it's happening more frequently. The only way to fix it is to keep multiple back-ups of the ENTIRE game and click back and forth several maps just in case, save the game, check the individual map file size and if it looks like the standard 'just created' map size, copy/paste over a back-up copy to the map directory. You can't imagine how aggravating this is.

So hopefully, through all these problems, I may still get this done. In fact, it was suggested to me by a few friends that I should at least complete the remainder of the maps, get a few events set up so you can at least explore around, snag all the 'main six' summon creatures and just have an open-pre-alpha build for testers/players to at least wander around in. What do you think? Would that be better than not having anything at all?

I'm starting to think I may need outside help to complete this at all, but not sure how we could collaborate such a endeavor and still keep it a cohesive product.

Are you using the official release? I've never ran into any problems with RPGmaker 2003 on Windows 10.

Might be worth doing, but don't feel obligated to or anything. This is your game, and you shouldn't release it unless you want to. That being said, I'd totally play it.

If you decide you need help, I'd be interested. It'd be fascinating to work on an RPGmaker game that had over a decade of dev time.
The EXACT same thing happened to me.

Back when I was using the unofficial version, I also had Kaspersky anti-virus on my PC for some time. For some reason the anti-virus didn't trust/like Map.LMU files and didn't allow them to be modified. The issue only went away when I disabled my anti-virus. So unless it was some weird coincidence, I believe that could be causing it.

You may have a totally different anti-virus program to me, but try to work on your game when it's suitable to have it disabled completely - or see if there's a different one you can install. Worth a go and it fixed my issue.
