Turning it in...

I have to admit the reality: I will not be finishing this game.

I grew too ambitious for my own good and real life has beaten me down so hard that I have put this to the wayside for far too long that coming back to it and all the various things, secrets, coding, etc. confuse me now more than anything. I've been stuck trying to figure out all that I was trying to do and it could take a long time before I'm ever back up to speed to how I was when I was fervently creating this game. By then, would my motivation be as it was and would real life truly give me the time left to complete it? Doubtful.

So what's left to complete? Well, there are the introduction and finale locations left to map. Terraco caves (an endgame-like lava/cultist cave area), and a dream world optional section. That's all the maps - rest of the world has been mapped out. Everything else has been created. Also, all the NPCs and events for the story and sidequests must be completed. That's a huge chunk right there and probably my biggest hurdle. And the implementation of some mini-games, and bonus timed events related to such that were planned. That's still a crapton of work left to do for someone who no longer has time to game make and has a family with two kids.

So my question to all of you would be: should I just release an alpha build with no promise or expectation of completion or should I seek to have someone take over and I hand all my documentation, story notes and more for them to complete?

I'm sorry for all who were expecting this for so long, but sometimes life doesn't give us what we want. It certainly didn't give me what I wanted and this is one of the casualties of that. I pray for your understanding in this and apologies to all.

It is better to have created something than not have created anything at all. I'm sorry to hear that this has happened, but it does help that you are aware of everything. I would say you could just slow down the pace and use your time whenever you can, but if you don't feel the motivation then that wouldn't help.

Ultimately the choice is up to you, it's your own project after all. Is there a selected person you know that would take over? Or it's just a thought as of now? Still, this game and what I've seen of it is amazing! I would love to see any of it in action, it certainly does look like a lot of time and dedication was put into this craft :)
I went through the same thing with Beyond Eden and still trying to figure out where to go with it. Right now I'm just trying to do a Let's Play of it so that I don't forget it entirely. Giving the project to someone else seems like an interesting idea. Maybe a dead game project swap jam!

I'll adopt the project.
Corfaisus, maybe perhaps take a look at what's there and all my design documents for what I had planned for it first before rolling in hot with the adopt? I mean, I'm not opposed, but maybe see the landscape first. ;)
Corf taking over would be awesome ^^)b
I'd obviously rather see the original artist's vision come to fruition on his own terms, but this is a close second. It'll be just like when Wheel of Time was finished by another author by using the original's extensive notes.

Lay it on me, sister.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Should I release a pre-alpha so people can see what state I left it in, or just hand it all to Corf with no public reveal?

Also, do you have Discord, Corf? That'd be the best way to remain in contact and work through all the details of what I had planned.

I do have a Discord; it's #5185
We've made contact. :)

Question still stands:

I say let Corf take a stab and then just release if it doesn't play out.
My vote would be to release the pre-alpha, and then hand it over.
I am going through my documentation and work I've done...it is insane the amount of crazy work I put into this. I didn't realize how much until I looked back on it years later. And I'll take those suggestions in mind. I'm still unsure of what to do.
It won't matter either way. Go ahead and release the pre-alpha now.
Reason being : People aren't likely to play an unfinished epic. Your pre-alpha will probably fall on deaf ears, but at least it'll be out there for the curious. Meanwhile, Corf will finalize the whole shebang and your magnum opus will see the finish line and get the appreciation it deserves.
Release the pre-alpha! I want to see the mapping :D

Yeah, I see no issue with releasing the pre-alpha.

Also, I'd be more than happy to lend a hand in helping the project come to fruition aswell in case corf wants a little division of labour. Even if it's just doing a few maps or something.
Good to see you're still going. My project is about as old, so I know the feeling when you get so overwhelmed by everything and just have to let go (or think you should).

Keep working on it, little by little. Set some time during the day to work on some maps, enemies, spells, sprites, and so on. Just don't get too fixated on one side of the coin, though. That's what I did and it burned me out.

We can all do this, as long as we believe in the game.
