c-crits...... *clutches throat, collapses into dust*

Yep not gonna even try to justify this blog! Feh who needs this "dignity"...... Anyway only 2 people here have told me anything at all about what they thought of it and this is one of maybe three or four games I've released that I feel good about (others are ghost voyage, biggles on mars, veggie tales because it sucks but intentionally so) and the only one without a review so idk?? Thoughts, abuse, etc

download up and skull notes

The download's up for the game! Also here are dumb trivial factoids I felt the need to relate for some reason.

Basically I started this project because my fingers were hurting from doing MSPaint pixel art for the Frog World game and I felt like throwing together some goofy plasticine stuff. The character design and name of Captain Skull was one that's been kicking around in my head for ages and has been used in imaginary game ideas as variously:
- a nouveau-rich media magnate who invades a small tropical island for his brithday only to be bogged down in a vicious Vietnamesque guerilla war (!!!)
- a villainous cowboy rancher
- a gay pirate on an obsessive quest to refind his lost love
Basically I just make games so I can finally use up all this garbage and not have to worry about it anymore.
As the game progressed I wanted to mess around with relatively straight scifi ideas and it ended up turning into a Doctor Who thing. Basically this means the mood whiplashes violently throughout and you can tell I was making it all up to suit the soundtrack. There is also a K-9 analogue except instead of a prissy robot dog it's a dinosaur head glued to a plastic tank because fuck you, that's why.

Doom Head was based on an amazing self portrait of Lee "Scratch" Perry which was just this gigantic grimacing head with lightning shooting out of his eyes and head. Any flaws are solely down to my own inadequacy and laziness!

Vermillo was a character in my first AGS game, "Escape From Death Mountain", which i didn't upload here because it sucked. His appearance here is less due to nostalgia and more the fact that I was lazy and liked his talk animation.

Also this is the only game I've actually released with real stopmotion animation in the form of Captain Skull's walk cycle! I actually do a lot of animations but since I save them for more ambitious games they generally don't see the light of day, and when I'm just making short games I usually go with the ole "shuffling paper cut-out" trick. Anyway, the way I animated it was using this setup:

that's basically a file shoved into a styrofoam thingy that's been weighed down by stones. then i jammed the other end of the file up Captain Skull and waggled his limbs to simulate motion. then I edit the pictures in MSPaint until I get the animation itself. I used to use a greenscreen thing but if you don't have enough lighting you always end up spending a ton of time trimming it manually in a paint program anyway so you know.

Also the blue sky in the title screen is just my bedsheets. They pop up again later on in the Ghost Caves, too. That's about it!
