Almost Infectious

Infection is an rm2k game that assumes the plot of every zombie game ever made. You’re a tough dude in a tough world filled with humans that were infected and decayed into monsters. The demo is very short, so it’s too early to really tell how good the game will be. It does a bunch of things well, and shows some potential.

Not even that far yet, are we?

As it is now, the demo really only demonstrates the basic ways in which the game will play out. It combines RPG elements with what you’d usually expect from a zombie game. You fight battles (non random) and level up, gaining slight boosts to your health and stats. MP is used as ammunition for whatever artillery you happen to be carrying, so if you’re out of MP, you’re out of bullets. Thankfully, there’s always the option to just melee attack your foe, so running out isn’t the end of your fighting days.

I approve of this battle anim.

So far, all battles against zombies are only one on one. Each zombie on the map is a separate encounter, and you can take them down one at a time or run past them. Grinding isn’t worth much, but you can clear out as many or few as you like (or as your mission objectives tell you).

Outside of battle, the game is ruled by standard RM exploration and the mission objectives you receive from NPCs. People who have jobs for you have a ‘!’ bubble near them, so you know who to talk to. Your objectives are always listed on the right side of the screen, so you never forget what you set out to do. The current demo only has one location to explore with three small missions you can complete in it. There isn’t a lot of enemy variety, but there is one thing I’d like to mention regarding the early zombies. I like that their movement speed and difficulty vary with how decayed they are. The most deteriorated zombies couldn’t catch you if they tried, but too many of the fast ones in a single spot could corner you. They all go down in 2 melee attacks tops, so they aren’t particularly threatening.

The game’s graphics are okay, but not exactly immersive. The main hero in particular bothers me a bit, as his head is more standard RTP style than his body. In general, the visuals are passable, but they won’t blow your mind. The game’s music, on the other hand, just barely doesn’t fit the setting. It uses a single RTP track for both the field and battles, and it’s one that sort of fits but also sort of doesn’t. I hope it’s a placeholder for something(s) grittier.

In its current state, there’s not much to look at here. The game has some solid concepts that can be expanded on, but it has a long way to go regardless. How good or bad the end result will be depends on how much these basics are innovated with. That said, I don’t think a rating would really mean much at this phase.

Thanks for the review Hali! good little read. :]
Most of the stuff you mentioned will be changed, such as the intro(obviously) the same music looping(haven't found the right one just yet)
There will be more enemies for sure! I just don't want to use up too many resources at very first starting area.
The enemies also start to get much harder in certain areas and the further you go from the Safe Zone. (depending on your level)
As for the missions, there should be about 5 available missions in the demo, 6 now.\
And the hero, I think he looks fine, but it is a standard rtp head from the charas-generator. i'll look into it!

Maybe when I get about 1-2 hours worth of gameplay you can play through again and give a star rating!
I really appreciate you not judging it quite yet in the demo stages, but at the same time giving your opinion on all the little things that have been implemented so far.

That's what reviews are all about!

I read Dark Gaia's review after, but it sounded like it was for a completely different game. Has this been changed a lot since the old version?

You're correct sir, the review is from a completely different version.
I've changed up the game quite a bit in terms of how the game flows/plays. It was very linear and you were on the move to get out of the city, rather than staying put and building up around you.
I need to get it taken down actually...
ugh want moar. demo isnt nearly enough :(

Thanks man, that inspires me to work harder on it. :)
I'm working on adding more items, creatures, balancing them, etc. also working on a new missions.
It won't be hella a lot, but I'll try to update it every now and then with new missions! :D
I'm going to add an entire intro sequence soon too, a playable "beginnings" of sorts, so I hope to have that all ironed out at some point, then I'm going to start the main story arc of the game!

And the ability to summon the "Office Whores" to deal damage to the enemies.
