This game was created as an entry for experimentalgameplay.com's monthly programming challenges. October's challenge was for male programmers to make a "girl game", and for female programmers to make a "boy game".
I therefore sought to create a game that would appeal to girls, but I think Small World can appeal to anyone!
Though I would consider this a role-playing game, there are no battles; no grinding to level X, or discovering super-hidden secrets. You are presented a world and encouraged to explore it. As you travel and meet other creatures, the game - and its goal - will reveal itself.
Part of experimentalgameplay.com's challenge is that programmers take no more than 7 days to make the game. Small World was created in about 5. It is therefore a short game. From watching other people play Small World, the game seems to take about one hour to complete if I keep my mouth shut, and barely half an hour if I don't :P
