Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play the role of a young man known as Leon, who seeks to survive in the harsh environment he is brought into.

Exploration is done mainly via a side-scrolling view. In certain areas, an exclamation mark will sometimes appear, indicating the presence of hostiles. Press Z when this happens to initiate battle, or wait to let it pass. Sometimes battle will be unavoidable. When walking, enemy encounters won't occur.

The battle system revolves mainly around each character's Abilities, which are a set of commands specific to that character. Abilities require AP and EX to use. AP is gained every time a character takes a turn. The default is 2. EX is gained every time a character uses an Ability. The default is 1. Note that this may change depending on the situation.

"Known Glitches"
Due to the limited functionality of the RPG Maker 2003 engine, there are various glitches and bugs which are unfortunately unfeasible or impossible to fix:
- Sometimes during an action, the battle data of a character will be temporarily overwritten with another character's, causing them to not perform as expected for that round.
- In certain cases, player actions can be interrupted by the enemy or other character's actions. To minimize the occurance of this, wait for current actions to finish before selecting an action with another character.
- Using items and guarding doesn't trigger the code to check for enemy deaths. You need to actually use an ability, or let the enemies take a turn.
- Although not a bug, Active Mode should be changed to Passive Mode in the in-game menu to prevent enemies from acting while you are taking an action.

"Hints and Tips for Boss Battles"
- Don't expect to just be able to spam regular attacks until you can use your Exceed ability. You won't win an attrition war with the enemy party.
- Always target the enemy's weakness if you can. If you want, think of this as a Shin Megami Tensei game. :P
- Make sure to keep your HP up. The vast majority of bosses have pretty powerful high EX costing abilities that'll wipe out your party if you're not expecting it.

- That said, keep in mind, the enemy is subject to the same rules as the party. In other words, they're also gaining AP and EX, and they also need it to use their more hard-hitting abilities. So if you can prevent them from using them while still retaining the ability to use yours, you'll be able to beat any boss.
- You can tell how much EX an enemy's ability uses by looking at the name of the ability. Similar to your character's abilities, it'll show up as the number of squares on the left side of the name.
- Of course, the above passes quickly so isn't that reliable of a method. As a general rule, you can expect that:
- Anything that uses an element other than Force likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that does multi-targetting likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that hits everyone hard probably costs 2 or more EX
- Anything that outright kills someone from full health, or makes you swear "Bullshit! That can't happen!" is likely an Exceed ability.
- Chances are it'll also be very flashy.
- Obviously, there's going to be some exceptions, but for the most part, this can be followed.

- Don't ignore Field Effects either. Bosses don't, and the Field Effects they use generally stack things in their favor. It's not just about dealing as much damage as quickly as you can. A lot of times, it's also about controlling the situation.
- Modes, Field Effects, and Boost ailments all stack. If you're creative, you may be able to create a situation where you can pretty much negate everything the boss throws at you, while tossing out Exceed abilities every turn. Bosses won't stand a chance.

MAP SAVE FREEZE: If you're changing things in this game in the editor and your save file freezes on the world map as a result, press F9, go to switch 112 and 113, and turn them both OFF. That should fix it.

that program is the problem.i can't play it without but it destroys my save files after i exit out of the game.

Are you sure you're not playing it directly from the .rar file itself? You should extract all the files out as a folder first, you know...
So, I've not finished with the EX Exhibition yet. I blame this stupid video. It kept begging me to make it once I had thought of the idea for it and wouldn't shut up until I did.

See, I "discovered" a secret EX move for the final hidden character and.... Ok, not really, but just check out the link below if you're cool with seeing spoilers detailing the final boss and the final hidden character in a A.I.L.A./"Tales of" parody.

It's spoileriffic, kids!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUP-1rodB2A

I hope it meets everyone's approval. :D

Heh, I just realized... I "Altered A.I.L.A."! One might even go as far as to say I made an Alter A.I.L.A. "variant". Yeah, ok, I'm done trying to be funny now so you guys can stop rolling your eyes now ;).
*Avoids link like the plague.*

I finally beat the tournament. Great last round. My team was Leon, Scott, and Violet, with no cheap mode setups. The opposition just couldn't handle he sheer level of luck/skill on my side.

I've also collected every ultimate weapon possible at this point in the game (just before the Central Tower in Avalon). Some of them aren't so hot, like Leon's and Jake's, but the ex-dual syncs (Ultima Weapon and C.R.I.S.I.S. so far) more than make up for them! Also a few secret moves unlocked, but I still haven't gotten all the ultimate modes. Fun sidequests all in all.

However, I have to point out that there's almost no variety outside of the "equip-battle-search for hidden rooms-buy stuff" cycle. It all gets repetitive from time to time. Although, the novelty of finding hidden items never wears off!

Anyway, I think I've dawdled long enough. Time to wrap this puppy up. So many characters to choose from!
I guess I'll update on the status of my play in Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis.

Right now I'm in the final phase of the game (Avalon), and I must say, from the Underwater Facility onwards, battle do get tougher, and I find myself unable to kill regular mobs quickly with just the basic abilities alone.
And I've already beaten Avalon 1, whereby the boss...just takes helluva long time to beat (I think I took about 15 minutes or so) before I finally won.

Now I'm really scared to move on to Avalon 2 lol. I don't have this feeling before in the original. But I know i must persevere to prevail...
Dear Neok,

Underwater Facility is the worst dungeon of all-time.

Wait, scratch that.

Underwater Facility 2 is the worst dungeon of all-time.

I am completely stuck here...

Tell us which part you have trouble with and we'll help you out.

Oh, and UF 1 was irritating if only because Neok didn't bother telling the player they can use a teleporter multiple times to get to different destinations. I think I wasted an hour trying to figure out that one.
UF2 wasn't as hard as UF1, imo. The boss fight was.

didn't know that you could do that, thanks
I found a little bug/overlooked property of the battle system. When erin wants to first aid, the amount healed depends on her potential damage output on the current enemy composite. Say that she has a Force only weapon, if she is up against a group of mutants that are all 1% force, she won't be doing much healing at all.
Ahahahahaha...I'm going mad.

Ultima Weapon is seriously the OMG. So god damn hard to beat. In the end I'm forced to use items to destroy the stupid bits...Took me like 5 tries and 20 minutes each just to defeat Ultima Weapon...but at least Ultima Weapon is finally down...
A TV Tropes update, if anyone cares: I just made a Wild Mass Guessing page for Alter A.I.L.A. Please post there if you have any theories about the game, or enjoy reading others' speculation!
Just started my Let's Play of AAG ( and my first LP in general ).

If you want, head over there, watch it, and give me some thoughts/suggestions on how to make the video better to watch.

Hmm, I thought I solved all the glitches with this. I'll take a look, but just in case, did you extract the full game into the demo folder?

Sounds good. I'll check this out as soon as I can!

Dude, items are there for a reason! Don't be stingy!
So I can't update my review because of the Anti-climbing paint. However, my score and opinions remain pretty much the same after beating this game.

Basically, this game is "the shit": a complete and near-perfect experience, which only needs some variety in the form of mini-games and such to establish itself as THE premier RPG Maker game of ALL=TIME. Everyone who has played it loves it, everyone who is playing it is loving it, and everyone who will play it will love it. 'Nuff said.

9/10.

I have my own reasons why I don't use items. Not a fan of throwing items because i think items do make things a little easier. I prefer using purely skills alone. Healing items don't count, of course (unless it's the full healing items). I use items only when the situation calls for it.
I adhere to the same conduct as elipswitch; damage items really do make things too easy. And with Erin, who needs healing items?

Ultima Weapon was one of the few times I did just say "screw it" and chucked items to eliminate the bits. It's *way* too hard otherwise.

I also just chucked bombs during
the first fight with Aila and both fights against Leon

but I think that those are pretty much unwinnable without bomb spam. :/

Edit: On a whim, I felt like asking a few interview-like questions... I like those, and I feel like it helps to understand the developer's motivations and to know about them as a person. (One of the benefits of indie games)

The previous interview mentioned in the blog covers most of the questions, so I only have three that are still nagging at me:

1. What was your inspiration for making the twelve central characters of the original Alter AILA? Why did you make those specific personalities for your characters?

2. What inspired you to make the setting a post-apocalyptic sci-fi one?

3. Which came first, the character or the title?

4. Will you continue to use a linear plotline for Variant, or will you go back to using multiple paths to choose from?

Once you get access to Stim Field Cs and Ds, you can replace Erin with another Damage dealing character, which helps to speed some fights up.

I believe that the ...

first fight against Aila and the fights with Leon are possible without combat items, they might just take a while. Breakdown + SPD boosters should make it possible. Problem with Aila is that her field effect will slow you down and drag the fight on. Problem with Leon in the duel is that Erin is pretty bad at dealing damage, so you'll be there for quite a while if all you're using is Rifle/Sniper.

And now that I look back at what I did, it seems like I'm doing more of a "video walkthrough with some commentary" than a "let's play". Seems like it's probably best if I change it.

Those are expensive though, and if you run out without a nearby shop, you're doomed. First Aid is completely free, and very useful for surviving long dungeons.

I do admit that Erin was kinda useless during the postgame bosses, though. She'd just sit there most of the time and do nothing. Replacing her with someone else probably would have been prudent, but I guess my traditional JRPG instinct of "OMG HEALER = VITAL" was preventing that from occurring to me.

Nah, I think those are fine. Not sure what other peoples' opinions are, though...
