Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. You play the role of a young man known as Leon, who seeks to survive in the harsh environment he is brought into.

Exploration is done mainly via a side-scrolling view. In certain areas, an exclamation mark will sometimes appear, indicating the presence of hostiles. Press Z when this happens to initiate battle, or wait to let it pass. Sometimes battle will be unavoidable. When walking, enemy encounters won't occur.

The battle system revolves mainly around each character's Abilities, which are a set of commands specific to that character. Abilities require AP and EX to use. AP is gained every time a character takes a turn. The default is 2. EX is gained every time a character uses an Ability. The default is 1. Note that this may change depending on the situation.

"Known Glitches"
Due to the limited functionality of the RPG Maker 2003 engine, there are various glitches and bugs which are unfortunately unfeasible or impossible to fix:
- Sometimes during an action, the battle data of a character will be temporarily overwritten with another character's, causing them to not perform as expected for that round.
- In certain cases, player actions can be interrupted by the enemy or other character's actions. To minimize the occurance of this, wait for current actions to finish before selecting an action with another character.
- Using items and guarding doesn't trigger the code to check for enemy deaths. You need to actually use an ability, or let the enemies take a turn.
- Although not a bug, Active Mode should be changed to Passive Mode in the in-game menu to prevent enemies from acting while you are taking an action.

"Hints and Tips for Boss Battles"
- Don't expect to just be able to spam regular attacks until you can use your Exceed ability. You won't win an attrition war with the enemy party.
- Always target the enemy's weakness if you can. If you want, think of this as a Shin Megami Tensei game. :P
- Make sure to keep your HP up. The vast majority of bosses have pretty powerful high EX costing abilities that'll wipe out your party if you're not expecting it.

- That said, keep in mind, the enemy is subject to the same rules as the party. In other words, they're also gaining AP and EX, and they also need it to use their more hard-hitting abilities. So if you can prevent them from using them while still retaining the ability to use yours, you'll be able to beat any boss.
- You can tell how much EX an enemy's ability uses by looking at the name of the ability. Similar to your character's abilities, it'll show up as the number of squares on the left side of the name.
- Of course, the above passes quickly so isn't that reliable of a method. As a general rule, you can expect that:
- Anything that uses an element other than Force likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that does multi-targetting likely costs at least 1 EX
- Anything that hits everyone hard probably costs 2 or more EX
- Anything that outright kills someone from full health, or makes you swear "Bullshit! That can't happen!" is likely an Exceed ability.
- Chances are it'll also be very flashy.
- Obviously, there's going to be some exceptions, but for the most part, this can be followed.

- Don't ignore Field Effects either. Bosses don't, and the Field Effects they use generally stack things in their favor. It's not just about dealing as much damage as quickly as you can. A lot of times, it's also about controlling the situation.
- Modes, Field Effects, and Boost ailments all stack. If you're creative, you may be able to create a situation where you can pretty much negate everything the boss throws at you, while tossing out Exceed abilities every turn. Bosses won't stand a chance.

MAP SAVE FREEZE: If you're changing things in this game in the editor and your save file freezes on the world map as a result, press F9, go to switch 112 and 113, and turn them both OFF. That should fix it.

One thing I want to make sure - did the scrap parts, good parts, rare parts do anything other than be used for creds? I recall somewhere in the beginning of the game when Scott was still in his tutorial mood that they can be saved up for something else other than money. Or did I save them for no reason at all?
No, they're just vendor trash. Leon is the one who says they can be saved up, then Scott just says "You'd think that, but no. Just sell them."
I had very good luck with the G-Quiz - I managed to get through all 100 questions the first time I met him, though I did get two questions wrong by question eighty or so. Between that and all of the wandering with the GPS, my shard collection is coming along nicely.

Did you go to Tinder's hideout in phase 9 again? That triggers the actual quest.

Anyway, he's fought as a random encounter. There's a certain screen where you'll hear mechanical footsteps. Walk around until you get an exclamation mark, then enter battle. You should see him.

Ah, okay. Thanks! That really could have done with more explaining in-game, though, especially since I like to have other music on when I'm revisiting old areas. I had no idea there was a sound cue until you mentioned it.

Would anyone mind telling me where Mk3 is when you're told he's near the shores of Pallas? I've looked around, but I haven't heard the footsteps in the places I've looked, and the searching is starting to wear on me.

Try the Harbor.
scuse me.... when i enter hte game how do i move? my controls aren't right either... x and c open the menu, alt is the z button... i think it's my mouse but when i move my mouse left my character moves left... and i can';t make him move right.. those are the only buttons i know of... i spammed everything on my keyboard.

also sry if it's already been answered and I haven't read, but i think even if i read through all the posts i'd quit after like 5 pages of nothing even relevant to my problem.
Wow, what the fuck is Gray anyway?

There is a reason for this that I hope I'll get to explain someday..

Well for Kugar, how is he supposed to be used, exactly?

The idea is for him to have a really high HP count, but weak defenses and abilities that get stronger, the closer to death he is. Anyways, I'll try re-balancing him.

How would the storyline lead up to it, though, if

If you ended up on the bad ending route, you wouldn't meet Aila at all or find out that Kugar and Hawk were being controlled. In that case, Kugar stays the main villian, and after defeating him, Erin goes over to his side to protect him, and as penance for her life.

At least, that was the idea. I didn't get too far into development before I decided to just go with a linear storyline. I would've really liked to have done this though, if just for the last scene I had planned where

Erin shows just how "prepared" she is, and why everyone fears her, by single-handedly decimating Leon's group (with explosives prepared before-hand (meaning she had already intended to do this from the start)), and then fighting one-on-one with Leon as the Jackal Labs collapsed around them.

It would've been awesome. :'(

On a gameplay balance note, however,

Admittedly, that mostly just happened because of the story over any real game-play decisions. Yeah, I kinda thought she was too weak offensive-wise for how much attitude she threw around, and convinced myself that if she was NPC controlled, she'd probably be more of an item user over relying on her abilities. I dunno, it just doesn't feel right to give her both strong offense and the ability to mass heal.

Oh, and something that I just wanted to say but forgot:

Yeah, that was kinda shoehorned in AA. I can do better! Honest!

my controls aren't right either...

Have you tried the arrow keys?

I have to ask something: In the no man land 3, in the begging of the water maze (The area with light) there is a guy sitting in a corner beside a bed with a yellow arrow in his head, is he suppose to do something? or just sit there with his . . .?

EDIT: NVM. It says something, I just had to reset the optional areas to see it.
I've seen mentions of No Man's Land 3, and I've seen it in the Orbital Prison Pantheon, but I haven't found a way to unlock it on the map. Anyone mind telling me how to unlock it? I'm wondering if I missed an alternate exit somewhere...
Go back to Stynx Prison and interact with everything. It'll be added to the map eventually.

Alternate ending stuff
:'( That would have been so sad. And frightening. Erin really is a Woobie. :( Anyway, how would things go after the final battle? Would Leon die as well, making it a "rocks fall, everyone dies" ending, or something else? And did you plan to have additional alternate endings as well, or just a "bad" and "good" ending?

There is a reason for this that I hope I'll get to explain someday...
Yeah, I always wondered about that too. What is he doing during Dark Force, exactly? Is that what he meant when he said that his cape had "sentimental value"? o_O

Oh yeah, also, Neok, what do you think of Alter AILA's Wild Mass Guessing page? I would be interested in knowing what you think of the theories there.
yea neok i tried the arrow keys. it seems they're not the right controls. cuhz it duzn't even move the menu
Alternate Ending

'Fraid I didn't get that far before I scrapped the idea and went with a linear route, so I can't say what would've happened after the final battle. I didn't have any other endings planned aside from that one.

Yeah, I always wondered about that too.

Hopefully in AAV. ;)

Wild Mass Guessing page

Hmm, that's interesting. Some of the theories are correct, but I won't say which ones. About the dropped characters part, just gonna add that everyone who made it off the planet will play a crucial role in the story of AAV, whether or not they've been dropped from the roster. Also, one of the theories can be resolved in AAG :P.

i tried the arrow keys

I'm not sure why that's the case. Do other rpg maker games work? Cause honestly, your problem doesn't sound like anything I can fix or even have control over.
yea other games work. in fact i played alter aila the first.
I just registered here because of this game and I wanna give much props to Neok. I've been playing RPGs for 20 yrs and this game is one of the best I've ever played! Sure, there are bugs and all but considering it was made with RM2k3, it's a great accomplishment. If this game was ever made for a mainstream system like PS3...oh the possibilities.

Now I have a question;

Does Scott have a Joker? If so, where is it located?
Scott does not have a joker; he is the only character who starts with six abilities instead of five, as you may have noticed. Celia doesn't either; she gains her sixth skill through story events. (Two jokers can only be accessed during the postgame, however)

Which begs the question: Did you originally intend for Scott to have a joker, Neok? Risky Gambit seems like the kind of skill it would teach... Anyway, if so, what would its description of Scott be?
imma start button spamming a lot... and hoping i can get my controls to work.. i wanna play this game soo bad!

Edit... OMG OMG OMG!!! IT WORKS!!! i wodner wut happened the past 2 days that messed it up but it WORKS!!!!! WEWT!!!! gunna go kill me some robots
@Zadok
Thanks :) Yeah Scott doesn't have a Joker. He has all his skills from the start.

@argh
Nope, Scott was never intended to get one. The only skills Joker teaches are "Amper" skills, or secondary Exceed skills. None of Scott's skills fit that criteria. Bit if he did, his description would probably be something along the lines of "Baddest dude that could save the president from a ninja kidnapping.". Probably :P.

@phatkookiez
Nice!
Man this game is awesome. Ive been playing it for 2 hours straight and my eyes are burning!
The only reason I stopped was because I got a Game Over in Phase 2
I wanna post something, but I don't know how to hide spoilers in my comment. Help?
