Long ago the planet of Cythera was created by a being known as Senlis. Senlis gave life to Cythera and created human beings. However, this process severely weakened Senlis requiring him to go into a deep slumber to regain his strength. To ensure life in Cythera remained in balance Senlis created several beings to distribute his power to. These beings, or lesser gods, were requested to not directly interfere in human affairs, yet ensure that proper tribute is paid to him. While Senlis was asleep, they quickly learned the pleasure of having humans worship them, and thus a polytheistic society began. Over the years the following for each lesser god began to grow, and wars begun to break out between the different religious factions. With humanity on the brink of destruction, Senlis awoke from his slumber distraught at the damage his “children” caused. He stripped the lesser gods of their power and as a result the gifts they bestowed upon humanity - the natural ability to use magic among many - vanished. Senlis then decided to leave the inhabitants of Cythera on their own to rebuild the world as they saw fit. But before leaving, he copied his powers to a single, unknown being so that life in Cythera would remain balanced. Senlis and the lesser gods were gone, but their influence was not forgotten. In the years to follow, the majority of humanity started worshipping Senlis, while the rest continued to worship the lesser gods. This will become to be known as the New Religion and Old Religion respectively.

The Year was 1338 and King Leo, ruler of the country Maridan, was in the twilight of not only his reign, but his life. With his death imminent, the only question that remained was which of his two sons would succeed him. His sons, Gregory and Victor were identical twins. Though it was believed Gregory was the first to come out the womb followed by Victor. So, by birthright, Gregory was to inherit the throne. The way King Leo was able to tell the two apart was by the fact that Gregory lost his left pinky finger in a sparring accident. However, Victor, the more cunning of the two brothers, used his brother’s disfigurement to his advantage.

About a month before King Leo died, Victor had a butcher chop off his left pinky finger, and wore a glove to conceal the act. On King Leo’s deathbed, when it came time to give his son’s their birthrights, he summoned Gregory to give him the Succession Ring, but both Gregory and Victory came forth. Confused, King Leo asked to see the left hands of both, and to his and Gregory’s surprise, both had the same disfigurement. Victor used this opportunity to speak up and claim that Gregory was Victor conspiring to usurp the throne. Gregory of course disputed this claim, but King Leo, delirious in his condition, sided with Victor decreeing him to be crowned King after his death. And so King Leo died leaving the Kingdom to Victor.

Gregory went on to become the Duke of Regimir, a birthright intended for Victor. While in Regimir, Gregory began a vigorous campaign declaring him the true heir to the throne. He gained many supporters due to Victor’s ruthless rule, and so his army grew rapidly. Gregory then became a threat to Victor, and Victor ordered Gregory to withdraw his claims and acknowledge him as the rightful heir. But Gregory refused, and Victor sought to prove his right to be King once and for all by declaring War on Gregory and his allies. Thus began the Praxis War – the war to determine the true King.

Scattered across the world of Cythera are mystical landmarks of unknown origin called Orphic Sites. It is speculated that these strange structures date back to the time when Lesser Gods ruled over mankind. Most Orphic Sites are impenetrable, while others can only be explored up to a certain point. Many scholars have tried in vain to uncover their secrets, and those who persist often find themselves missing.
