Stayin' Alive is a terrible and comedic game made in 3½ days for the 2011 Weekend Gamemaking Binge Event.

Winner of the highly coveted:

Dan Hartman Award:
Awarded by Shinan - 2011

CLICK HERE IF YOU'RE GETTING A "MISSING FILE" ERROR WHEN TRYING TO PLAY STAYIN' ALIVE.

From the opening:

"The year is 1979.

Daniel Joseph Funkepholis is a life-long
disco fanatic and amateur DJ from Funky Town
who goes by the name "DJ Funk".

His one-room sci-fi themed disco club
is considered the worst on the scene &
he is generally regarded as the crappiest
disco DJ to ever walk the earth.

DJ Funk is about to wake up...

To his worst nightmare."

I've never worked to a deadline before. Expect the worst.

And please, don't bother critiquing this game as if it were a serious project.

Missing file!

Instructions to fix missing file error:

- If you have RPGMAKER 2003 copy the file "system2c.png" from your RTP into the "System2" folder for Stayin' Alive.

OR

-If you do not have RPGMAKER 2003, right click the image below and save it to the "System2" folder inside the "Stayin' Alive" folder (wherever you've decided to extract the game to).

^Best "patch" ever^

And done.

Explanation:
Because I used RM tool (which is built for rpgmaker 2000) to scan my project for missing resources I neglected to include (or remove the game's need for) System2 graphics. As a result you may receive a "missing resource" error when trying to play the game. If you have rpgmaker2003 then simply paste "systemc.png" into the system2 folder (i believe that's all that's missing, and it's not even actually used in the game).

BUT

I am changing the available download to a version that should have no missing resources.. It's pending at the moment and should be available shortly.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

This is pretty cool. Nice music selection! Except Misfits (boring as ..), but which then again fits perfectly.

Those minigames cannot be won properly, ugh^^ Still, you can do good enough.
^That is the actual title screen music^ :3
heh I spent over an hour with this game, most of it on that last part. The countdown didn't help :/ Luckily I hadn't used many healthpacks until the last part so I could survive each attempt pretty well.

I think the firebombing would have been better if the speed of the flames was a bit lower. It started off and the first three are slow and you think "Ok, I can do this" u.u *shakes head*

I missed two in the first section. I started yesterday, and after a while of getting pissed at those punkers I said fuck it! I just want out of this section and skipped a few alleys. Then I didn't see the skateboard, which btw, I should have! even with low brightness. I lol'd when I saw the skateboard in plain view. So I just saved and shut the game off. Then today I just loaded my save and tortured myself a bit more :P

DJ Funk was all up in the ladies during the final credits haha I enjoyed the game and the challenge.
FUCKING HELL! :D

You absolute legend! That's some dedication haha.

Did I mention I tested each one of the firebomb bits individually :P? I never did them all successfully in order.
The trophy was meant to be viewable at the end of the game, but I was completely out of time and needed to get the game finished. 24 records = 24 attendees in the club at the end of the game :D Well done!

Any idea which two vinyls you missed, or on what section they were? (I'm hoping and praying that it's not an error on my part y'see :P)

I'm chuffed you got replay value out of it :D haha

WTF! There's a skateboard?! xD haha wow. yeah, I was playing this on my projector and cause my lamp life is almost over I have it on low. A red skateboard would have been nice heh I'll go back and continue.

That problem with not being able to move, it was just one time that it was that bad. A few other times I took maybe 2 hits in a row. Yeah I noticed you could walk through them but that particular time I ran into a wall and the punk was behind me. I was trying go around but..yeah..

Hey, no prob, it's a funny idea. I'm going to play as many of the event games as I can. Also I want the high score >)

*edit: just finished. holy fuck man, that fire bombing was ridiculous! It happens way to fast. It's impossible to beat it on reaction. I had to do it over and over until I memorized the whole thing.

The first part where you have to dodge punkers is rather annoying. It's the fact that you pause when they hit you, at one point I was holding up and my character wasn't moving at all. He just kept getting smacked like 6 times in a row :/

Well, that's never happened to me during testing, but I suppose it could happen. One thing worth noting is that the punks gain no-clipping for one second after each hit, allowing you to walk through them. (unless more than one is occupying the same tile).

Then in the next room I can't go down, I can't go back, and there is nothing to interact with. I "talked" to every tile in every direction, several times actually. What am I supposed to do here?

Solution:

I have had one other person complain about this too. Maybe my screen is set too bright compared to other people's because it's not very hard to see on my monitor. But hey, I guess I should have thought of that.

Thanks for actually bothering to play this by the way :)

Cheers man :D I did want it to be slightly challenging I guess :P

10/26 and 760 isn't BAD but it's not very good either haha. Your club was at least almost half-full at the end of the game.

Well I didn't want people to be able to move to the arrow before the message had ended :P that'd make it too easy :P you get a split-second to move and that's it! (I tested every step of that minigame and they're all TECHNICALLY possible to get without getting hit :P it's just hard, and there's a special 1979pt bonus for a perfect run :D)

Blocking the visibility of the arrows is bad though, I totally agree. Sadly that minigame was made on the MONDAY of the competition so I really had to rush to get it all finished!

Annnnd I stretched out the countdown so the music would have properly started by the time you start dodging (I know, it's really annoyingly long.. I went through it every time I tested it!)

No worries! There'd have been more names if I could remember everyone I'd asked little questions on the IRC throughout the weekend! but oh well.
I played through it. It's pretty neat. I liked the variety of minigames, though the first dodging ones were a bit hard. But I guess the intention was not to leave intact!

Pretty cool for something put together in such a short time. I did 10/26 and 760. Is that too bad?

I was just mildly annoyed with the last minigame, with the 4 directional arrows. First because the countdown is too slow :D. And second cause the message boxes prevent you from moving, and they block the visibility of the arrows. Using text pictures instead of message boxes would have been MUCH better.

But that's all. Pretty cool. And thanks for the thanking!
