Chrono Shift is a fan-made non-profit game currently in development. It is intended to be a stand-alone game that can also serve as a prequel to the Chrono series. It takes place in the Dark Ages on the Chrono planet, fifteen years before the events of CT.

Some features of the game include:
  • Customized sprites (not all are totally original but I don’t think even a single one has gone unedited)
  • An all-original, never-bever-heard soundtrack
  • Experience the story with an all-new playable cast (though you may recognize a few eventually)
  • Contains several ties and nods to the official Chrono games
  • Utilizing Atoa’s Custom Battle System with the Chrono Plug-In
  • Raziel’s Chrono Custom Menu System
  • All-New spells and battle animations
  • 3-Person caterpillar system with 8-directional movement just like the official games
  • Tons of minigames and 20+ hours of gameplay
  • Multiple endings and New Game +
  • All-new Alchemy item creation system
  • An expanded and more diverse world to explore with more secrets than you've seen before
  • Epic and meticulously-planned story that expands the mythology

Like the demo, the game will be and was always intended to be free. We would never charge for it, if you pay somebody money for it, they scammed you, get your money back.

The team continues to grow and work toward completion. Bare with us and wait patiently while we work and rather than release news updates, we’ll release a finished game.

*Disclaimer: The engine for the game has gone from the demo using 2k3 to the full game using XP. The reasons are numerous, but at the end of the day the upgrade allows us to make a better game. The decision was that simple.

RMXP - Help us Finish the Project!

Hello subscribers! Mr. Bekkler here, director of Chrono Shift.

This game has been in the works for several years now. It was on hiatus for a while as I had personal matters that needed my attention but now that I have some time for the foreseeable future, I'm trying to get it finished. I'm very sorry for the delay, and we'd like to avoid further delay and get this project completed, which brings me to my point.

We need some help.

The problem is that when we first started, it was an RM2k3 game and add such was very limited. We chose to switch engines to RMXP, to allow the game to better fit the feel we're going for. A few very dependable teammates never let go and continued to work in my absence, despite the fact that we were essentially starting over. Thanks to them, the game's engine, battle system, and menu system are all up and running and the custom graphics we created have been converted to XP format and imported. The plot outline has been finished for a long time and the dialogue script is progressing smoothly.

What we need is mappers. Unfortunately I cannot offer any money as this is a completely non-profit game. However, if you're interested and capable of making maps in RMXP with tilesets that have already been imported, I'll make sure you get credit when it is complete, and obviously you'll be able to enter our underground forum where our development resources are kept, including our sprites, our 50+ page plot outline, our original soundtrack, the working plot script, and the game engine, among other things.

Please let me know if you're interested and able to help. Or if you have a friend who may be interested, please encourage them to message me or comment here. We really need dependable people who can deliver some results if we want to release this thing any time soon.

Thank you for your time,
Mr. Bekkler

TLDR: We need RMXP maps.

Will be playing abit soon, only wish that that other game team with the other chrono game that looked bad ass didn't change everything, because of square enix pwning fan games, what was their new game name again? But still had something to do time travel anyway.

CRC error, yay.
While I enjoy the little Kefka theme remix played in the beginning of the game, is there a reason you're throwing music from a different series in a Chrono fan game?
I kind of like this demo, but there are some problems with it.

-Why are you using RTP defaults for everything? At least you could just make new battle animations with the RTP or change to sounds in the System to different RTP sounds.
-When I look in the Items menu in the database, I saw that you used default items for...some reason. Why can't you just completely empty the database and replace the defaults with new stuff?
-Lastly, why, why, WHY, are the elemental attributes all set to 100% when they should be higher so that the characters' stats actually matter!?

EDIT: Almost forgot to mention this. Why do characters learn skills by simply levelling up instead of earning TP? This system should be pretty easy to implement, so this seriously bugs me.

I will post a reworked demo with these problems (and some others) fixed soon.

I'd really prefer if you didn't post another version of the demo, at least not here. Feel free to email a link to me at addiesin@gmail.com, my team is working on the full game and there are things I didn't change because it is a demo, purely intended to drum up interest in the full game and the Chrono series in general.
I don't have a problem with the RTP stuff left over, most of it has been changed, and the battle animations and sound effects in the full game will be completely new. For the sake of meeting our projected deadline, there were a few compromises. I'm sorry it bothers you so much. The coding of this demo was done by me pretty much alone and it is my first legit RPG Maker game, so the quality of the work should naturally improve with time, and LanceVII, creator of Chrono Alter, will be working on the full game as well.

There is a lot of music that was not from the Chrono series, actually. Most of it is remixes or re-recordings of Yasunori Mitsuda's work, but some is actually from the other composer on Chrono Trigger, Uematsu, who did a lot of Final Fantasy music. If you listen closely, there's music from several Square and Enix titles from before the merge. There's also music by Yoko Kanno, whose compositions Mitsuda's music very well.
Yes, that's my point. It's a Chrono fan game. It should have either original music or the original Radical Dreamers/Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross music OR remixed versions of those tracks. That's just how I feel.

To me, using another game's music in a game set in another game's universe cheapens the overall product. There should be plenty of source material out there for remixed and original Chrono tracks.
I get what you're saying. I guess what I was going for when choosing music was more guided by the mood I was trying to set than what part of the Chrono series I was trying to emulate. I still feel that in this way, it was successful. I actually planned to use way more Radical Dreamers music but decided most of it would fit better later in the game.

Bug found. Arcane forest, there's a battle against two beetle things and two of those sludge octopi. I lost the battle, only to have it automatically restart (with dead characters), tell me I failed again, then lock into a loop of this behavior. Had to kill the run to handle it.

This wasn't the only bug; nor were the bugs the only problems I had with the game. This is just the first thing I ran into (about ten minutes in) that counts as a gamewrecker. I recognize it's technically avoidable (if I'd won the battle, after all, it probably wouldn't have hit), but the manner in which it occurs implies to me that it probably was done by the 'special death effect' eventing, and would have happened for any battle, not just the one in question. Something like that should have been considered as a possibility, and tested for, before the project was released in any form.

I'm sorry, but frankly, whatever your intentions were, I doubt the product you have here should have been posted. I find it unlikely you will be attracting anyone's attention to the finished work - as things stand, you are more likely to drive them away from your final product.
I'm sorry you feel that way. Thanks for the bug report. None of my testers lost that fight, apparently. Feel free to report any or all bugs you find. So far over 200 people have had no problems.
I'm not sure why I bothered to play this but... it's bad. Since my feedback is longer than I expected, I put my unedited thoughts in this txt file here:

^Yeah.
Sorry you didn't like it. I appreciate the feedback in the file, and actually this is my first attempt at an RPG Maker game (the fact that you'd pegged it as my 2nd or 3rd, I'll take as a compliment), and all the coding and balancing was implemented by myself for this demo so I won't take any offense to your critique. Thank you for taking the time to type it all out, I'll make sure to consider everything you said as my team and I continue to work. I don't agree that it's "bad" because I have fun playing through it and a lot of other people have also had fun, but I do agree it needs a lot of work before it can be called finished. This is a demo to show that it's not vaporware, it's in no way intended by be seen as a finished product. I am glad you finished it at least.

*And Melchior's mustache and hair are pink (he does not have beard...) because he's younger than he was in Chrono Trigger, Gaspar is blonde and Belthasar has teal hair.
I played a little into this simply because it is just a demo and I don't have time to invest like I once did. That said, the short bit I played I enjoyed the game for what it was. I can't really see this so much as a fan game to the Chrono series, but there is a charm about it that I like, regardless.

It may have something to do with the faces (from facemaker), or that some people are using Auras verses TP, or a few other odds and ends, but it doesn't feel very Chrono'ish aside from a few names and familiar places. I wonder, is there a connection to Chrono Trigger/Cross with this game? If so, it may help to develop that point sooner so people understand when they start playing? Otherwise, it may be better to view this game as something completely different (change names/places, etc), create your own backstory, and don't use CT/CC as a crutch. I can see why some fans of the actual games may be put off if there is little resembling CT, but as I stated above it could definitely work as your own tale separate from the CT world. The visuals are nice, the gameplay is fun and simple, and the mapping is rather decent.

Good luck, either way!
Thank you for the kind words. The story we have is actually woven into the Chronoverse rather than an extension of the main characters of Trigger or Cross. It might not be for everybody, but our sister project, Chrono Trigger: Prelude to a Dream is a direct sequel to CT, so they'll have that to keep them satisfied. :-)

Most of the demo will be reworked, the full game will still feature a new cast, but will have more CT sound effects, new spells and animations, better story pacing and better writing in general (I was going for "Ted Woolsey" but we have another writer to take over some), way more balanced fights, more dungeons, the precursor to the "Gate", the origin of the mystics, and the rise of Zeal, among other things.

So, wait let me get this straight, your calling the game horrible because the demo had bugs and wasn't perfect. My god, can you imagine? This is simply unheard of! Demos with bugs and unfinished maps and inperfectality! What HAS become of the world?

Thank-you very much for the critique it is very much appreciated; honestly. This time I'm not being sarcastic, but you don't have to be rude about the critique :P

xoxoxo TheMage
I liked the demo, I'm looking forward to the full game.
