MAD CATS are out to destroy the COOL MUTTS, and they are succeeding at it. They have managed to take all their bases and are hunting them down to deliever them the final blow. Their only hope now is for RAD DOG, a crazy intergalactic hero, to help them...

You control the ship of RAD DOG in the journey to eradicate the MAD CATS and to regain the lost bases.

This game was made in one month for the Valedictory event. It's side scroller shmup with pixel movement and probably shares some similarity towards Gradius, Zero Wing and that lot, just with a few less projectiles due to this being rm2k3 after all.

The game features 3 levels and about 20 different enemies and 5 kinds of power ups, with 1 of them being speed and the rest weapons, all which can be upgraded by gathering another power up of the same kind.

Each level has about 3-5 minutes of gameplay if you don't die at any point during them. Since that's very unlikely to be happening (You will die) I'd estimate there to be about 30 to 60 minutes worth of gameplay, which should be around the point where you've either beaten the game, or gotten pretty frustrated.

Also a tiny warning. This being a rm2k3 game and all, and with this not being something the rm2k3 was made for, it's quite possible you will experience some lag if your computer is of the older kind.

Added a page which shows the different upgrades of the different weapons and included some information about their strengths and weaknesses, and also added a tiny section including some cheats which will probably make the game a tiny bit easier in case you're completely stuck. Just remember you'll need to have the updated version (i.e. downloaded the game after 29/4/2011) to be able to use them.

It's amazing that it was made in 2k3 indeed!

Too bad I suck at games like this (I'm dying at stage 2).

Are the sprites custom?
Thanks for the congratulations people.

The sprites (apart from minor easy stuff like bullets) are mostly Gradius III rips. For now I can only wish to get that good at making sprites myself.
sTAGE 2 IS TO HARD XD
I have tried 11 times but stil cant beat stage 2. XD
Anyway its fun XD
Then I bet you're looking forwards to stage 3, which is even more difficult
Sure. I must beat this game. It's fun.

why would i heal when i could equip a morningstar

So why did you not make this in Game Maker? This is a 100% serious question.
Because then I wouldn't have been able to release the game on time, given the 1 month frame I had for the valedictory event. I'm pretty sure Game Maker would allow me to do some stuff more easily and lift some limitations I had while using the rm2k3 (especially a not-pain-in-the-ass-to-make pause function), but I haven't used Game Maker long enough.

Learning how to use it would have costed me too much time, compared to doing it in rm2k3 which I know well enough to have implemented most of the technical stuff relatively quick.

Design and debugging is what primarily took time, and that's issues I'd surely have in Game Maker as well, especially since I haven't used it enough. I'm also a bit unsure if I should try to learn using Scirra Construct over Game Maker as well.

Though, I won't deny that I simply like fiddeling around in rm2k3 as well, doing stuff with it which it's simply not made to do, eventhough it's clearly an inferior engine when coming to games like this.
Ok somebody get to level 3 ? :D

Doesn't sound like too many have, maybe the cheats in the "weapons and cheats" page will help on that end a little

I watched the video earlier. pretty cool stuff. Would be neat if you released some kind of starter pack or something(which would interest me greatly). It would be neat to expand on it. It looks like bosses would be pretty limited though. The coolest thing would be having a boss with snake arms like from the old snes games.

Reminds me of Carius, he made a game somewhat like that called Pirates I think. Bridge da gap.
Wow, I can't even beat the first level with 10 tries. )-X

How can I switch between the straight shot and the diagonal one (between blue and green)?

Edit: I'm at 50 tries now..... -,-

Edit: Gawd, I reached the boss now with 1 life left and that guy is even more insane than the whole level. This game can't be meant seriously. Not even Chuck Norris could beat it...

It should be possible to make a starter pack out of what I have without too great difficulty, which shouldn't be too hard to use either, at least in terms of stage creation and regular enemies. I'll see what I can do, but it probably won't be happening right away, since I have lot of finals coming up quite soon.

Bosses however would be harder to generalize as they vary in size, and possibly including more complex behaviour.
Should be possible to do a lot more with them though, I just avoided doing too much out of them due to the time constraints of the event. Snake arms would probably be possible, but also a true hassle to implement.

Wow, that's a lot of tries for the first stage. There isn't a way to "toggle" between weapons. Power ups simply make you change the weapon, and you'll have to get a new power up to get the old weapon. Instead you could power up a weapon by collecting the same weapon again... there's also cheats which can be used at the weapons and (cheats) game page tab.
Btw. Kentona beat the first boss on second playthrough :x
Wouldn't be so frustrating if you could even save... X_X But limited tries suck.

Also I see no fairplay in the enemies being able to stand 3 hits and I die with the first one....

this is shmup this is hardcore game. this is how it is
Update: The rare occurence of a "Division by Zero" error should now be fixed
This game kind of gives me an idea.
This game is fun to play, true classic gameplay. I especially liked the intro part where you used the phrase 'all your base are belong to us' in a clever way ;) This game is hard but to a veteran player it's a breeze(hint: always get speed first). The bosses have so much HP though...I think it's just a little too much. Nothing else to complain about.

Awesome game.
I should have made this comment sooner...
In terms of event codes, you're the one I'm currently looking up to, bro.
Excellent and impressive game. Keep it up ;)
it look like Gradius from FamilyStation ..
