Super RMN Bros 2 Officially Completed!

It's done and out! This is, barring any dumb bugs I missed, the final version of the game. No updated levels, no new submissions, just finished. If you downloaded the game prior to this please redownload and restart as some world map changes will fuck up your save file.

So please, download and enjoy!

Sorry for taking so freaking long everybody, I won't be in charge of any future Super RMN Bros. because I am doing a terrible job of it. I'll leave it to you guys to decide how to carry on from here.

just because you suck at Mario games doesn't mean this is a bad game. I had no problem wizzing through World 1 and 2 and I really enjoyed it.
Agreed, same here. Some of the early levels are still a bit crowded with enemies, but I blew through the early worlds without even breaking a sweat.

Though it helps that I rock at SMBX and scrutinized every stage before...

I don't know. While World 1 was somewhat easy, it didn't feel easy enough to be World 1. The difficulty mainly came from the crowding of enemies.

Keep in mind this is not a major complaint I have for the game, however.
The Zelda 2 levels are in World 7 with a 4 and 5 difficulty rating (not counting the hidden Zelda section in Flying Block Fun). Having troubles in World 1/2 then jumping to World 7 will be a big jump in difficulty because you skipped over half the game and they are still difficult levels in their own right.

I'll probably change World 1 around a bit to make it easier (so far everybody who hasn't had a problem with it has been participants in RMN Bros 2). I haven't decided exactly how to do it yet.

Hyrule wasn't meant to be easy, even though I would consider it less than hard. If you use links moves (downstab mainly) the level isn't hard, and take your time, and use your shield to block. Using any other character makes the level MUCH harder, which is why I put in block for them to throw at enemies. It's a Link level after all, Mario levels are hard to play as Link so it makes sense that it would work the other way around.

I'm gonna be blunt myself, just because you suck at Mario games doesn't mean this is a bad game. I had no problem wizzing through World 1 and 2 and I really enjoyed it. Most of the levels I've played so far are excellent. I had tons of fun and would recommend this to any Mario fans, although some levels could be "tidy"er

I found World 1 a bit difficult in my first go of the game. Granted, I'm not the best Mario player out there, but I eventually beat all the stages. World 2 is giving me a bit of trouble, so that tells you how crappy I am (or how hard the game is?).

Upon seeing the comment that there was a Zelda 2 level, I looked for the stage in-game. Eventually, I got lazy and found it in the level editor to play test it that way. To say the least, I died way too easily. Interesting concept? Sure. I can see an entire SMBX game based on this concept, if somebody wanted to do it. Does that stop "Hyrule" from being a bit difficult for me? No.

I wasn't playing the game to review it, but if I did, and let me be blunt here, I don't think I'd recommend it (or give it a very high score, or whatever it is we're going to do) with what I've seen of it thus far.
Overall, a big improvement from the previous version.
Instead of 40 stars to enter the final world, why not set
the amount of stars to 35? Try adding more blue
mushrooms and moons (Bonuses) in many levels
throughout all worlds.

Edit: Hyrule proved to be a fun stage.
All the other levels seemed unique and fantastic for a new Mario adventure.
Great Teamwork.

Hey, I'm sure the feedback's appreciated, but uh...weren't we supposed to think about fixing these things during that entire month we dedicated to criticism? I mean, I (and certainly others) like to hear back about this stuff, but talking about changing things seems pretty pointless by now.
There is absolutely no consequence of dying besides walking back to the level you died on. Lives are an antiquated game mechanic that needs to die and if I could remove it from SMBX I would.

(the shell is intended to make hoarding lives easier)
Just played some of this, got 26 stars and played the levels in order.

It's a great game!

Here's some things I noticed:

Mushroom Castle

can get 3up repeatly in the first room .... what?! and then you can go in the basement and get unlimited 1ups from goomba bouncing as peach.

i disagree with that. i started with 40+ men and there was no reason to try and not die and it makes all the 1ups in each level seem pointless.

but the level is cool and the NPCs say some good stuff

Overworld

what is that high res thing to the right of Mushroom Castle?? i dont get it and it looks out of place. so does the Zelda 2 stuff scattered about.

i like the layout of things though, it flows nicely. the order of the levels feels pretty natural, for the most part.

Bowser's Dungeon

The first sign is hovering in the air, it should be one space to the left

Happy Hopping Plants

No-Win between two pipes that are too high. theres blocks that can be destroyed and a bouncing goomba to help you up but if you destroy the blocks then get hit and fall in the pipes you can get stuck.

Batty Bungalow

not enough power ups, unless i happened to skip them all. there's lots of enemies and i died right below the star. the ending should have less death surrounding the star to avoid frustration. it's easy if you have firepower but...

Hells Mansion

Not nearly enough powerups. and the boss battle can be started while your still on top of the hill and you can rain fireballs on the boss and get some free hits. you still have to fall down to finish him off cause he moves out of range, but it cheapens the fight

Coin Flight

That is more than a D:2. It's the only level so far that I died more than twice on. There's lots of open space to fall to your death, there's lots of enemies, the power ups are scare and its even worse when you keep dying, and the level is very long. at least it feels very long, lots of jumping on ledges. I dont know the scale goes up to but I'd say thats more of a (2.5?)3/5, or 5/10

I've been hearing that World 1 is too hard for world 1. I'm thinking of going through the levels and lightening them up a bit. Cut some enemies and ease up on some platforming and moving Lennox Passage back towards the end of the world and nuke the homing koopas and bullet bill storm (totally avoidable if you keep moving but if you don't you're fucked). Thoughts?

World one... hard?

I found world one quite easy compared to Shortstars version. (No offense shortstar.)
aw, dont nuke the wall of pain at the end of Lennox Passage. its sort of the core mechanic of that part to run without stopping, so there's no reason for a person to stop. but w/e, i found out that it doesnt work in 2p the way I wanted it to. Mario will reach the end first in an even race, its unbalanced.

World 1 was a walk in the park.

Davenport's Robotnik's lair is ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGH! I also got stuck in the level and had to restart it from the beginning. I can't understand why selecting "Quit" in the pause menu takes you back to the title screen instead of the world map >_>
ahhhhh fuck I thought I got those
There's also a few times on the map screen that I see black. Mostly in the 2nd land.
Bug report: I forgot to add the Star exit to Lair of Evil. I'll get that fixed and uploaded today. You can still finish it (run offscreen) though.
I was always stuck in Hell's mansion too or any of Davenport's levels.
