I eat my words.

Production on Black Tempest has continued. I won't have any peace of mind until I wrap up Laine's quest.

Quick, huh? ( then again, I had already written out 3 key scenes before I jumped ship to Tristian >< ). So all I'm doing now is making the maps for those areas. And, shocking as though this may seem to some, there will be no updates. Don't want to spoil the fun, now do I?

And Vol I and II will be released as one game. This allows older players to just continue from their last save point ( Tranquil's Rest in the Ulaid Forest ) and prevents new players from jumping straight into Vol II and seeing a CRAPTON of spoilerific moments.

So, as a result, the download will go on this game page ( random bit of trivia: Enelysion is the 11th most subbed game on the site. I need 2 more subbers to knock Sailerius' Vacant Sky off the Top 10 spot XD )

It begins...

More mystical magic.

After playing through Vol I of Enelysion, I realised, for the first time, what a magical world I had constructed. Tairngire to me is still more intriguing and mystifying than Eridanus from Tristian. There's a kind of magic in the air whenever Laine and co. are traversing her plains. Maybe it's partly due to the soundtrack. Or maybe it stems from the fact that the game world as well as Laine and co. have been with me since 2011, so I'm... quite attached to it.

And I knew I just couldn't abandon her.

So thanks, nhubi. You opened my eyes to this wonderful world I created. =)
( even if you'd rated the game lower, I would have still appreciated it )

So now you guys can do your happy dance as Tristian gets put on Hiatus. XD

Ah-hahaha, that's the trouble with fake people: you make them and you spend time with them and then you get super attached. OTL

I'm glad to hear you're back on this! I could understand why you cancelled before, but, like... MAAAAN walking away from a good thing is so hard, hahaha. I hope development goes well for you, and I'm glad to see you getting excited about this again. nwn
You've been scarce, you know. XD Glad to see you're still around, haha.

Hey, cool beans!

Glad to see you pick this up again. :)
You're so fickle :D Abandon a project, restart it, go on hiatus, reboot the whole thing, lose interest, resume where you last left off, call it quits forever, someone writes a review and brings you back.

I can't handle this roller coaster of emotions!
I know. I really need to prioritize which games I want to work on... But I had been waiting for a review for Enelysion for 9 months. I was beginning to think people had lost interest, regardless of sub count. ;_; I've been working on Tristian for nearly a year. Might as well take a break from it.

And it stemmed from this site as well. Not one single reply since Feb this year on that site. I was peeved. Like, seriously peeved, but I never showed it. That pretty much put me off working on the game until I left the site and came here instead...

Sure, the reply count is high, but for the last few months there I was bumping the topic up like an idiot.

A game developer cannot improve his/her work without feedback, and that site lacks it severely.
Happy for Laine, but sad for Tristian. Mixed feelings are strange.
Tristian will continue as soon as I wrap up Vol II of Enelysion. I can't possibly work on two projects at once. Then I won't feel so guilt-stricken about putting games on Hiatus so as to work on another ( more popular ) game.

Well, shucks. Glad to see this out of cancellation hell but like urano, sad for Tristian, but I know you'll get both done, these characters get under your skin and you can't leave them for long.

also, smps :)
@Emmy: Yeah, I wanna see Origin/Riftwalker show some signs of life. XD
@nhubi: It's an awesome site, that. I've been reading virtually all the FF articles.

Edit: Actually, while looking through the Chrono Trigger article, I came across this. The author, Pitchfork, wrote this:

"More advice to aspiring game designers, should any be reading this: if you're making a game that wants to tell a story, it is best to be concise. Offer players a consistently engaging and memorable thirty hours rather than sixty hours of level grinding, repetitive battles, self-indulgent CG action sequences, conversations that say nothing and go nowhere, and the same drawn-out battle animations repeated every five minutes."

So true. Naturally, the time length is probably cut in half for RM games.

My English Masters said much the same thing, though they borrowed from Shakespeare to do it. "Brevity is the soul of wit." Though that was usually followed by 'child' and an explanation just how unnecessarily verbose I'd written my latest essay. :)

It's a shame that smps has pretty much died, though the older articles are a joy to read.
True, I wish there were more articles like that. One can learn so much from just reading them. I'll also put this here.

"Contrary to what you might expect, there is almost nothing that facilitates creativity like a set of obstacles to work around. Instead of inhibiting the process and dampening the result, they more often lead to a stronger product."

Same author, same article.

That pretty much sums up my approach to my level design as well. I only work with four sets of tilesets. All the maps seen in Enelysion are constructed from just nine tilesets ( including autotiles ). =) Actually, not to blow my own trumpet, but the only level designers better than me who designed amazing maps without parallaxing are BlindMind and Happy/Rei ( just look at Ascendance ).
And Vol I and II will be released as one game. This allows older players to just continue from their last save point ( Tranquil's Rest in the Ulaid Forest ) and prevents new players from jumping straight into Vol II and seeing a CRAPTON of spoilerific moments.

Why not at least provide the option of either playing from Vol. I to Vol. II in one straight sitting or just jump into Vol. II with a prerequisite setting of stats, gear and items? I only ask of this for those who have already played and finished the first volume and have either lost or misplaced their previous saved data or those who really don’t want to bother with playing the first volume again.

Anyways, I’m happy that Laine and co. are getting a second chance at life, but now I kinda feel a bit bad for Tristian and all her fans for now getting the shaft. Why can’t you just work on both?

Neither can I.
Originally, Laine and co were to start Vol II at level 18 with their best equips, but I figured the player would be peeved at losing a lot of nice items/equips/armour that they may have taken a while to find. >< Of course, in retrospect, losing/misplacing a save file and having to start from over is probably even more grating, so I'll give the player that option. Thanks, Addit. =)

As for Tristian, I need a break from it. Working on a year on one project and nothing else can get a little bit boring, but I may resume production in a couple of months. If I feel like it.

And I'm sorry for being so fickle. I'm like that in RL ( not a good trait, I admit ) so I apologise for letting it creep into my game development. From now on, I'm going to set deadlines for my projects. I want to finish/wrap up Vol II and Enelysion as a whole by the end of the year, at least. Six months, but hey, I made a one-hour game in a week ( it was one of the first games CashmereCat ever reviewed ), so an additional five or so hours shouldn't be too hard.

Nice compromise, since I've got my save file and I got to 21 before that final fight, so yes I'd feel irritated at being demoted. Still dependant on how long between now and Xmas feels playing the first part again wouldn't be a trial and it would refresh my memory before plunging into Vol II.

You can call it fickle, I'll call it spontaneous and whimsical, which sound much more pleasant and melodious. :)
