A demo of the opening sequence is now available for download. Please view the readme here either before playing or before commenting. Thanks for testing!

Story
"The Dragon Clan has thrived in the thousand years since the fall of Deathevan. The leader of the Dragon Clan, the Great Uniter, the Descendant of the Destined Child, is dying. Now, two factions that have lived in one city for so long have begun to divide. Odjn, leader of the Light dragons, and Chetrye of the Dark believe that war is coming, and with no destined child, it's unlikely the Light will survive.

Whispers say that the Goddess has returned..."

Our final name, and our commitment to you, the gamer.

The final name for this fan sequel will be Breath of Fire: A Line Ended.

What will we feature?

-Dynamic storyline unlike and like other titles in the series.
-Return of some familiar faces.
-A true attempt to not cut corners. There will be no tiny cities, no auto generated dungeons. There will be storyline content in almost every area of the game.
-Campfire, a place to chat with your characters about their feelings about what's going on.
-A customizable city similar to Breath of Fire II.
-A custom battle system, with new special powers for all characters, and a unique Dragon system.
-No, none, not any, jarring music. (See yah most of II's soundtrack!) But will be composed of music from across the series.
-A Variation of the Master System.
-And more!

What do we *want* to feature, but are still being considered?
-Animated monsters. As many of you know, Breath of Fire II and on features animated monsters(1 did have some animations). It is likely that we will follow the route of 1, and just have animations on the boss battles, that is not final though.
-THREE main storylines, following the children of the Dover, Chetrye and Odjn families, with completely different, yet interlocking storylines with a unique cadre of characters to play for each. This does mean that you'd get to play as the Dark Dragon faction!
-Turn based battles, still considering this, though.

How is development progressing?
-I have completed the storyline from Dologany, to the cabin, back to Dologany, to the Show Cave, to the Wayward Forest. Banesburn(name pending) is the city directly after, which is in development.
-Have mapped out most of the monsters to about halfway through the game along with the items. The exp curve had to be adjusted, so I will have to tweak it along the way, however, it is presently on track for the content already fully made, IE to just past the Forest.
-Unique Sprites for Chetrye, Odjn, Ryu have been made, working on the others.
-Battle animations have hit a snag, working to the limit of my ability, however, outside help would be excellent.
-Storyline written to the end of the game for the child of Dover. Script written to Windia.
-Currently my main roadblock is making battles not look shitty. This will be a process, and to some degree a daunting task.

The perversion of the D-Counter system might be interesting, if you can pull it off. But if you want alternate ideas...

What I did on a failed/abandoned attempt at a BoF fan-game (it was in VX, if that makes any difference) was to handle Dragon transformations as statistic enhancements (buffs, if you will) that lasted until the end of the fight.

I had five transformations, all of which buffed all stats to some degree, but they varied on which stat was buffed more: Warrior concentrated on strength, Eldritch concentrated on intelligence, Defender concentrated on defense, I forget what I called the speed concentration (though it also probably had it's naming roots in BoF3's gene system), and Kaiser was the one that buffed all stats equally.

After the necessary "awaken powers" scenario, Ryu would be able to transform into any given form that was available. In doing so, he lost any traits his former form had. For example, switching from Eldrich to Warrior caused an overall loss of strength, but caused an overall gain of intelligence. Switching out of Kaiser... would be just plain stupid. Of course, Kaiser would have had it's own unlock sequence, since it was just that crazy-powerful.

I forget how much those abilities cost, but they probably weren't cheap.
I think it would be interesting to have something original but slightly based on previously done mechanics. Something that will be fun to play.

As long as it's not something too complicated since I'm working on the battle system right now :P, but I guess with events and variables a lot of things are possible.

Initially I had wanted to try a perversion of the D Counter system, where it would start as soon as you transform in the battle, and the counter would only be for that battle, and if you didn't untransform before your limit was up, ryu would go berserk and wipe the party.

This sounds positively MAGICAL. Additionally, since you're in a time period that's supposed to lead into dragon genocide, it would certainly make for a valid argument as to why killing them should be okay if transformation drives them homicidally insane. Just...augh. If this system was your first instinct for this game, I say by all means go with your gut!

Outside of that, I would say either stick with the system from 2, or make an 'in transit' system for your 'in transit' game. An example would be a temporary form with heavy AP bleed, but that still caused damage based on AP. This also serves to give the dragon forms more of a 'niche' role, like they had in 2.
Determining how to handle transformations was something the Fated Child team initially struggled with, too. Just try to make it balanced without making it useless, is the advice I'd give you. :D

What?

I'm considering all of the options atm, nothing is decided.

There's been several responses to your post, none of which I have responded to. I am still thinking it over and isn't something that I should decide before the battle system is complete.

I appreciate all of the comments on this site, even if I don't rush to respond.

Bit of background: There have been times in the past where I post what I think are crazy/awesome suggestions, and they seem to be totally ignored. It was as if the post never existed to begin with. I was just taking a jab at this observation.

Like I said before this part of the conversation happened, I'm probably thinking way to far ahead for the point of the game that you're at.

Gave the updated game a go. I wasn't expecting many huge changes, but there's a few notes of interest that I thought you might want to know about.

Every time I look at that portrait for Ryu, I think to myself, "Sataro!" This is more a note of personal concern, as the number of people who get that reference are quite few.

Found a possible missing word. Guess in parehtesis: "I wouldn't be surprized if the dark dragons don't declare open (war) if they're not chosen though..." The line is spoken by a guy in the Great Hall, lower-left hand side.

Probably unnecessary blat on a certain character:
Even if "Deis" is actually Myria in disguise, something still seems off with the sequence where Dologany is destroyed. I could be going off memories of how Myria acted in BoF3, but I don't think she would necessarily want to see the dragons kill themselves.

From what I remember of BoF3, Myria believes herself as a caretaker for the denizens of the world, Brood included. Sort of a mother-child relationship, if you will. It just so happens that the Brood are "troublesome children" who need "special treatment". The "special treatment" she gave Teepo and Ryu was a choice: to die by her hand, or to give up the powers of the Brood and live with her. She strongly advises the latter choice, possibly not even mentioning the first. Teepo took her advice, and chose to stay with her. Ryu chose... well, that depended on the player.

Outside of this, there still seem to be tiles are passable that should not be so. Check the possibilities of the area where the hut is. Not the hut's insides (I wasn't specifically checking that, though), but the area where the hut physically resides. There was also a place in one of the houses in Dologony, I can't even remember where (sorry!), where there was a chair, and the wall tile right next to it (or perhaps the one above it) was passable.
The world needs more BoF fangames! Why is this on hiatus???
I did parts of the battle system, but goldengaav seems to have stopped working on the game, so until he comes back to it I guess it won't be done.

Since it has been a while since I heard a peep from goldengavv in any respect (ether in updates of this game, or posting on RMN in general), I presumed the dreaded phantom of "Real Life" somehow got in the way. And might still be in the way for all I know!
I really hope everything goes well I dont want to see something great just stop like lotps was really good yet the guy just vanished.
So whats the sitch, Kim P...I mean Golden G
