Sacred Reviews: Lovely Sword Episode 01

Introduction

Lovely Sword Episode 01 is a short surreal comedy game created by Radscythe utilizing RPG Maker 2003. And while I find myself more readily able to get behind the jokes then the last reviewer. It's hard to consider this game anything more then chuckle worthy.

Story

The story of Lovely Sword is about a young prince trying to find a wife in order to appease his father who claims to only have a year left to live. Though, considering the family physician also believes the prince is a dolphin in disguise. The likelihood of the king dying within the next year is dubious at best. Though before we can go on a princess hunt will need to save the kingdom from the wrath of a herd of pikachu.

Gameplay

On the gameplay side of things the game utilizes your standard active-time battle system. About the only complaints I can toss out there that aren't rooted in my basis against this combat system on principle is that the prince's group attack skill has a rather odd description. That description being "given to a prince". Seriously, how is anyone supposed to guess this is a multiple target attack skill from that description?

Graphics

In terms of visuals the game is pretty solid. While there isn't anything mind blowing to be had the various changes in style and what not are definite match for the nature of the comedy being attempted.

Sound

In terms of music the game is rather mixed in my opinion. While, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the musical selections in this game. Those same selections were obviously lifted from Radscythe's personal collection and features songs from groups such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Cinder Road. And while these songs aren't bad on their own they really don't fit in with what is taking place on screen.

Conclusion

Lovely Sword Episode 01 isn't a bad game per se if your a fan of surreal comedy. After all what other game out there includes a prinny from "Disgaea", Master Chief from "Halo", and Osama Bin Laden? By that same token though if your looking for some smart comedy this game definitely won't appeal to you.
