I guess I've done some stuff!

I've been having a lot of ~Alvaro Character Feelings~ lately (aka the kind that make me sit around drawing him and staring with a tear in my eye going all "this motherfucker"), so music for the day is a song that makes me think of him. >w>

Anyways, I have, indeed, done some stuff! Today I finished mapping the first town you head to (Julia's hometown, Isin), so I have a coupla shots of that for ya.


What a great hometown, Julia. IT'D SURE BE A SHAME IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO IT...

I'm really happy with the end result! It ended up being very cozy and intimate, which is just what I was hoping for. nwn I mean, I also got to stash treasure away and stuff, soooo...


YOU MUST LOOK IN ALL PLACES FOR TREASURES this is one of ~those~ types of games


And, in case you couldn't tell, I started on character poses! IT'S A LOT OF FINNICKY WORK but dang does it add a lot of style to a game. OTL I finished most of Julia's basic emotes (aka I have 1 full sheet of them), so she's basically done until I find I need a pose for something later on. OTL
Hahahaha only 5-7 more full sheets of poses to go, and then the important NPCs emotes. IB

Finally, the last thing I did lately is start on Julia's character portrait thing!

I'm still futzing around with colours and stuff, but eeeehhhhhh. EEEHHHHHHHHHHH. I'll get to that when I feel like figuring out how to paint again *cries a lot*

Anyways, there ya go! A little progress update~

Also hahahaaaa, if you're talking about the banner, it's an image randomizer! I can put new taglines in if I feel like it, but thus far I think I only have the original 4-5 I started with. >w>

@Amaterasu: YEAH I'M STILL ON THE FENCE ABOUT IT. On one hand, yes it is super cute and super stylish and defs would stick out, but on the other hand hnnggghhh drawing them more ~realistic~ looking might be fun. BT

This town gives of a vibe of those Final Fantasy IV ones: they also have these oriental-looking buildings for reasons I don't know why.

If I were you, I'd rework that grey/silver pavement border 'cause it kinda throws off a loop; it's especially noticable with that light yellow pavement vs. dark yellow pavement and the two tower-like structures in the first screenshot.

Also, by looking at Julia's artwork I can't not think about Esmeralda from Hunchback of Notre Dame; I think it's the skirt which in turn looks quite (Yoshitaka) Amano-like.

...okay me being a weirdo aside: YEAH honestly it's one of the things that really drew me to this tileset! It super reminds me of FF4. nwn Originally I wanted to go with stuff that looked sorta like pueblos, given that Kuruk is supposed to be similar to southwestern North America in climate/landscape, but eeeehhhhh making my own tiles. EEEHHHH it's too much work *sob sob* A-At least the desert itself is still reminiscent of what I'm going for!

Heehee, thanks >w> I've ended up simplifying a lot of the costumes as time has gone by, and as such have lost a lot of the "THIS IS INSPIRED BY AMANO STUFF" costume pieces, so yaaaay I'm glad it's still visible~
oh hell yes secret passages. I'm gonna spend like an hour and a half in this town bumping into things

realtalk, top-down rpg towns are always really weird in terms of balancing the buildings that mean something with buildings that don't (since hey, making a bunch of interiors with nothing in them just leaves people dissatisfied) and having a reason to explore despite that is always really nice. nice way of making people notice the cozy, maze-ish side streets without forcing them to go through them for necessities, too. I always think of stuff like Breath of Fire 4 for cities of this type, but since you were expected to spin the camera around a bunch they always wound up being really tough to actually navigate.

(I'm gonna double down on Noel's comment but mostly because FF4 is loaded with secret passages and treasure in towns too (or maybe because I brought it along to play on the plane and I'm comparing it to everything atm))

I keep parsing the main path as another kind of roof, though, since it uses the same tile -- maybe something else would work better?
