B-Movie Gaming

Hello!
Ok, first before starting this review, an important info: while it's true that the link for download here on Rmk.net is not working anymore, the game is still available (and downloadable for free, of course!) at Gamejolt

Ok? Very well!
A MidHorror Night is a short game (1 hour more or less, ok?) made by Lustermx (the author of Lunar Wish: Orbs of Fate, an rpg and a longer game available here or on Gamejolt) about four friends who are getting too old for trick or treating, so it's time for the last trick or treat. Since they have no luck so far at getting candies, they decided to try the large mysterious mansion that seems haunted and guess what?
It IS really haunted! Oh wow, what a shocking surprise!
Anyway a MidHorror Night is not a game meant to be taken seriously, it's almost a lighthearted parody, not scary at all.

Something very dangerous? Oh come on, I'd have never imagined that, after what happened so far!

Ok, I said almost because the adventure *is* a horror story with supernatural, deaths, blood and... well no let's not say more because this is a game that must be played when you have a free hour. Oh and while the ending may seem rushed, I liked it and I found it extremely appropriated, so play it, if now you are curious!

Ok, still here? Well now I'll tell you about the gameplay: despite being a story about a group of friends (FOUR friends, just like your average jrpg party) we play as one of them, Tash. Tash has to solve puzzles, avoid enemies and other hazards (that will kill her, and pretty fast!), expect minigames, timed sequences and enigmas, and using the XRay Goggles and the Throwing Star... whoa that were two cool and original features but no, I won't spoil the fun of discovery. I just wanted to mention two interesting and rarely used mechanics that stand out from the rest (I mean, did you expect just the occasional chase scene? Wrong!).
Luckily there are save points and items to replenish Tash's "health" (that's not called Health but Fear, still has the same role of the life bar), anyway game difficulty in my opinion was really well balanced, it is challenging (there are some items that unexpectly will hurt you if you go near... and there is no way to predict that!) but still fair, just do not expect to run casually and finish the game without any difficulty!

Now mapping... well the maps are really nice! I mean, most of the resources are Rtps and something we probably already saw one thousand times, anyway they are so well organized that in the end the visual look great! Ok, some rooms look weird, but the game is set in a haunted mansion, so clearly it's not all real what appears, and in any case there are no ugly parts. Nope, even the cutscenes are extremely professionally made and the final result it pretty good.
I cannot also complain of the music selection, really appropriate!

HE... WHO? Ok, that's the guy Fate was speaking about. Now let's run away from here and read the...

Final Verdict
A MidHorror Night the first place in a horror RPG contest, so I expected a good, polished and fun game... guess what? I was not disappointed! Ok, this may not be the perfect horror (ok, well "horror") game, still it's a pretty good one! I heard that the bugs were fixed, and in fact I do not remember finding any (just a little lack of polish on some parts), so this is another point in its favour! Ok, to tell the truth the final parts seems a bit rushed, anyway there are really minor complaints that can be made about this game.

This was A MidHorror Night, the game you should play for Halloween, even now, I won't judge you. But yes, play this game!
