Date, create, and share!

Assuming the role of a male high school student in Japan, the player will meet, interact with, and date a number of female characters with the goal of winding up with one of them at the end of a 101-day calendar. Yeah, you've seen this all before...or have you?

In other romance sims, there's little reason to replay the game again once you've pursued all the characters you're interested in. But Heartache 101 allows for a variable female cast. The number of characters in the game is completely open-ended!

You can create new characters and add them to the game, share them with other users, and add characters created by other users. You can create the images for custom characters from a template, or use images you created yourself, or images from any source. (only "standing" images of characters can be imported; there is no event CG in the game) A simple scripting language is provided for writing story events. You can also customize some of the music.

The game system itself is in part a visual novel interface with gameplay that include conversational decision-making, board game-like mechanics, stat management, financial management, and more.

New game forthcoming, some might like to know

Since I've been asked many times if I would ever make a sequel to Heartache....

Well this is not a sequel. In very many ways it's radically different. But some might find that it partially retains a bit of the same feel?

So I'm posting the first public screenshot here, and whoever is interested, look for a game page up in the next week or two with the title "Where One Citizen". Game is not complete yet, but after 10 years of development it's about time to start showing it!

I have been taking a break :) My new project is quite far along and should be ready for beta-testing in a couple weeks.

I will say that there is another reason I've been hesitant about adding GxB support (and it might be the same reason you're hesitant). Most people are not bi. Even with GxB support, most male players are only going to be interested in the female chars and most female players are only going to be interested in the male chars. So an informal segregation would likely arise among custom content, and in that case maybe it would be better to just make another game that is dedicated GxB.

All right, All right, both of you. No need to be so rude about it.

And of course I wasn't being serious, I oppose most dating simulators anyway.

i dont think they were being rude i think they were trying to warn you that it might be a bigger bite then your expecting i dont know how good your skills are but its easy to get overwhelmed

I never said it were to be easy.
Flowerthief I'm kinda with Marrend's idea here that there should be more characters, but the only thing that's going to be hard about that Idea is that character designing and story making. The only thing that I noticed in the Custom Characters is that there are lot less Story going on, I mean no offence to Marrend, Nekochi, Kimotodragon and dude797 for all their hard work on their custom Characters but correct me if I'm wrong but the custom characters stories were less. I already had several of them in Love level and some of them were in like level but I only had 3-6 stories for each of them unlike the built-in characters they had much stories to tell.

P.S. please don't take this comment the wrong way.......
and I also loved this game, you may think I'm kind of a weirdo or something but I had little (little) crush on Riho and Akari, can't choose on either of them ^_^ oh and by the way this is my first comment here XD

Persistence is definitely a factor, FANNYMAN. The built-in content that was handed to us by flowerthief was eight characters with intertwining stories. That, in it of itself, was a feat of writing, make no mistake. The best custom content has to offer is, um, well I don't know! I'd like to think Masako's got something, but personal bias would certainly be getting in the way of that opinion!
Hey, somebody who gets my point! Yeah, stories should go out of the way in the favor of all who play!:D
Gosh I got soooo motivated now, I'm going to slave away this whole afternoon^_^! Thanks FANNYMAN, you've made my day! Spread the word!

P.S. On your P.S. You're not alone. Riho and Akari lead the pools leaving everyone else far behind. I'm a fan of Akari myself, and Riho's route was the first one I've gone through. There's just something in tsunderes that makes you wanna make'em smile, you know?:D
I have to wonder how much of my own love of tsunderes is to blame for the chars being written in such a way that Riho & Akari lead the pack in popularity. But actually, my personal favorite is Keika, so maybe people just love tsunderes.

Thanks for the feedback. I would like authors to be encouraged to return to their old content and add onto it with more story events as they come up with them. Unfortunately, the upload process doesn't facilitate making updates to one's creations; it's something for me to think about.
I had a fun experience, and I'm not done.
I started following Tsubasa, ended up getting Keika to "Lovesick" stage, went on several dates with her, and somehow ended up with the Riho ending. :p
Countless hours spent, countless more to enjoy. I thank you for making this game.
And in the end, I only saw 50% of Riho's route.
Thanks for your feedback ;)
this is the only game i may have reset more than Fire Emblem (at like day 98, have just enough time to get the ending i want XD ). AND I GOT ALL OF THE TP >:I. and this game has virtually the most replay value on the planet
Glad to hear that, and congrats on getting all the TP! There should be an achievement for that, huh?

Custom characters are downloaded separately from the main game, though they are generally found here or here.

As for having files in the correct directories, the ones I built extract files into the proper folders if the target folder is the directory that Heartache is in. 21 Ways might not extract this way, though it's been a while since I messed with that character.
To be honest i loved the game, but i felt the further i got in the game the less would happen, plus the endings are similar, i got 2 and the second i skipped a bunch of days to see if it was majorly different, this game has nearly unlimited replay value, this is true fully one of the better but together rpg maker games, even then some of the ones that aren't that great make it to ios. All in all i only have 3 complaints, not much happens near the end, the endings aren't that great, and when they invite you to places they don't tell you how to get there. XD
Thanks for the feedback:)
Can anyone give me some help? I've been working on a custom character; got her profile and tachie set up no problem, working on story, but I can't seem to get her music to play. I used the character creator and her music plays fine in there, and when I check the text of her profile, it has the correct listing, and the game doesn't give me errors on starting, but in events with her I just get silence. The file is an MP3. Any ideas what's up?
Check on the character entry with your text editor and see if the creator set the path correctly.

Wouldn't it depend on how the STORY is written? If a character appears onscreen, his/her theme song should (keyword: "should") run by default. If no characters appear on-screen, and no music is set before hand, the system defaults to no background music.

*Edit: This song you're trying to run. It is somewhere in the "Music" sub-directory, right? That's probably a really dumb question, but...
Yes, it's in the Music directory. I first had it in a single subfolder (Music/Kuri/KuriTheme.mp3), but then decided to try moving it up one (Music/KuriTheme.mp3) to see if that fixed it; no dice.

Her profile text document says "THEME = KuriTheme.mp3". I looked at the profiles of the other girls and noticed they didn't have a file format ending, so I tried changing it to just "THEME = KuriTheme", but the music still isn't playing.

I even tried declaring "MUSIC = KuriTheme.mp3" in the story file (would be a pain to have to do every time, but at least it'd be playing music instead of silence). I can declare the built-in music files from the music folder and have them play just fine (MUSIC = happy.mp3), but that file seems to hate me. In fact, if I declare another music file and then my character appears onscreen, she'll stop the other music, but won't begin her own.

I wrote a little test scene, just to check. Calling the built-in girls allows their music to play and stop as expected when their tachie are shown or erased (even layering: show Miki and her theme players, show Keika and her theme plays, erase Keika and it goes back to Miki's theme because she's still there. Speaking of, does anyone else think Keika's theme sounds like the opening to "Hotel California"? Random thought). Calling my character produces dead silence.

Having the MP3 extension in the profile shouldn't have any effect whatsoever.

Anyway, try this: After setting "MUSIC = KuriTheme.mp3" in a STORY, insert a "MUSIC FREEZE" line after it. Save, then try the story in Story Test mode. If you're still not hearing anything, I'm not sure what the deal is.
