Date, create, and share!

Assuming the role of a male high school student in Japan, the player will meet, interact with, and date a number of female characters with the goal of winding up with one of them at the end of a 101-day calendar. Yeah, you've seen this all before...or have you?

In other romance sims, there's little reason to replay the game again once you've pursued all the characters you're interested in. But Heartache 101 allows for a variable female cast. The number of characters in the game is completely open-ended!

You can create new characters and add them to the game, share them with other users, and add characters created by other users. You can create the images for custom characters from a template, or use images you created yourself, or images from any source. (only "standing" images of characters can be imported; there is no event CG in the game) A simple scripting language is provided for writing story events. You can also customize some of the music.

The game system itself is in part a visual novel interface with gameplay that include conversational decision-making, board game-like mechanics, stat management, financial management, and more.

New game forthcoming, some might like to know

Since I've been asked many times if I would ever make a sequel to Heartache....

Well this is not a sequel. In very many ways it's radically different. But some might find that it partially retains a bit of the same feel?

So I'm posting the first public screenshot here, and whoever is interested, look for a game page up in the next week or two with the title "Where One Citizen". Game is not complete yet, but after 10 years of development it's about time to start showing it!

I am so addicted to this game! I've reached the Miki ending which was bittersweet, and the Shihoko ending which was pretty depressing. Is there an ending in there where they just leave high school together and live a happy life together, or did I just do something wrong and mess up the endings I got?

It sounds like you might have gotten a "generic" ending for Shihoko, and a "regular" ending for Miki. I could be proved wrong on this point, however.

Technically speaking, all characters have an ending sequence where the character shows up at the school entrance, after a talk with Miki, and the go off somewhere. This sometimes made me wonder what happens if Miki was the character whose ending you were getting! (Yeah, I've never gotten a Miki ending. So sue me.)

In any event, I think I vaguely understand what you could mean. I think the closest thing to that might be found somewhere in the original quad-tech. I could be proven wrong on this point as well.
When it comes to built-in characters, you know you got a good ending if it involves a phone conversation a couple years or so in the future :)
(the exception is the secret character)
I just finished playing it.The end was just so good
I love this kind of game
I know there are other endings but my ending was really romantic =)
Will played it again in another time

Sorry, I was busy with something else. However, when there's a whip, there's a way.
*relieved sigh* Thanks.

I didn't know LOTR had a animated version. Maybe it never made it here, I dunno.
I loved playing this game so much and I'm trying to get some people I know to play it too. I swear I'll get the secret character someday (hoping soon)! Customization is really fun and easy too.

Is there a way to play as a girl? Haha XD

Thanks for making this game. :D

And just a little something...
aliceofcecil, thank you for the comment and nice picture! Would it be all right if I post it on the website? I think many players will recognize the scene it is depicting :)

It's funny because before I even clicked on that link, I was going to mention the following....

One of the big things standing in the way of the viability of support for a female protagonist (otome mode) is lack of a character image template people can use to make datable male characters consistent with the art style of "medium build girl". I wonder if "medium build girl" could be modified to be "medium build boy"? If someone came along and offered to do this there'd be no excuse for me to not add otome mode. I've added pretty much every feature everyone has requested except it.

Am I a terrible, terrible person for not recognizing that scene? Probably!

Technically, it is already possible to create male students. Would they have tachie to match with "medium build girl"? No, but it's still possible to do it. For example, the profile editor supports males, and I think the game was able to handle males before that was ever built? I could be wrong on that point.

Anyway, I think the real question lies in why people choose to not make male datable characters. If it's a matter of including a female perspective, I don't see the problem. Well, outside of the task of actually coding the thing, but flowerthief has proven highly competent in this regard. If it's a matter of graphical consistency with material_girlm, well, that's something else. It would be beyond my feeble editing skills, that's for certain.
Sure, go right ahead! That scene was fun. :)

An otome mode would be great. *v* But that art style might be a bit difficult to copy... Still, I'd like to see if I could make a medium build boy template...

Uhm.. Don't expect a miracle. XD
@Marrend
Yeah, boy x boy is possible now, but no one has made use of it that I know of. I think girl x boy would be more in demand.

@aliceofcecil
Okay, take your time! I won't be able to work on the game again until January, probably.

So, I randomly tried going to the official website, but I got this page. I even tried going through the "administration door", and I still got the "High CPU notice" page. Does anybody know anything about this? What's going on?
Yes, that seems to be happening from time to time now. The good news is it should be a temporary problem. Whenever you see that page, just try again in a few hours. The bad news is that this means that traffic to the website is reaching limits set by my free provider. Doubtless, most of it spam. (That fix I enabled for the comments page protects spam comments from succeeding, but that doesn't mean bandwidth isn't used up every time they try) I don't think there's anything I can do other than 1. pay for more bandwidth or 2. disable comments, and neither option I like.

Alright, I'll keep that in mind if I see that screen again.

Because nobody told me not to finish uploading the file, I've managed to upload a version of the game with all the content I know is available (with the exception of Yuu and Fran) pre-installed. As far as I can tell, everything is in working order, so if you are having any issues with the custom content, you should be able to use this file without a hitch. Otherwise, please let me know!

In any event, you can get it from my locker, or click here. I'll keep this file until another update comes by, or unless I'm told by Big Boss (That's flowerthief, by the way. I am not making a Metal Gear Solid reference!) that this service is unnecessary.
Oh, did those fixes for Yuu not work? Anyway, sounds good.

I didn't try messing with Yuu, to be honest. Also, the error with Fran was, literally speaking, supposed to happen. I looked closer at the story file, and the line in question said "CONDITION = 35". Not "CONDITION = 35 DONE", just "CONDITION = 35". That's a simple enough fix, but I looked into the error after uploading the file.
