Date, create, and share!

Assuming the role of a male high school student in Japan, the player will meet, interact with, and date a number of female characters with the goal of winding up with one of them at the end of a 101-day calendar. Yeah, you've seen this all before...or have you?

In other romance sims, there's little reason to replay the game again once you've pursued all the characters you're interested in. But Heartache 101 allows for a variable female cast. The number of characters in the game is completely open-ended!

You can create new characters and add them to the game, share them with other users, and add characters created by other users. You can create the images for custom characters from a template, or use images you created yourself, or images from any source. (only "standing" images of characters can be imported; there is no event CG in the game) A simple scripting language is provided for writing story events. You can also customize some of the music.

The game system itself is in part a visual novel interface with gameplay that include conversational decision-making, board game-like mechanics, stat management, financial management, and more.

New game forthcoming, some might like to know

Since I've been asked many times if I would ever make a sequel to Heartache....

Well this is not a sequel. In very many ways it's radically different. But some might find that it partially retains a bit of the same feel?

So I'm posting the first public screenshot here, and whoever is interested, look for a game page up in the next week or two with the title "Where One Citizen". Game is not complete yet, but after 10 years of development it's about time to start showing it!

Leave it to Marrend to do stuff no other person would do!

Remember this post? I thought about how flowertheif told me to delete the records file, and it made me re-think about how I could have gotten the error. I came up with a theory: what if I created my own records file (I've done that in the past), but rather than set it up so that I had Story Test and Clean Mode right off the bat, I did nothing with it? Meaning, that I created a totally blank file? As a test, I took my current records file, and cleared it out of whatever was there (Control+A followed by Delete works wonders on this front.). The result? Three guesses.

Script 'Begin' line 225: NoMethodError occured.
undefined method 'chr' for nil:NilClass

If you guessed what was underneath the hide-tag, you win a prize are absolutely correct! In light of this, I ask a bit of forgiveness on this front. Clearly, I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing for the eightieth time. It's also fairly safe to say that this is not an error most users would get. Only Marrend...
Well, it's still an error message you shouldn't have to see. Something like "Error: corrupted records file" would be a bit more friendly. But it's good to know that v2.3 is essentially stable after all!

(out of curiosity, had you figured out how to flag story events as seen?)

I know, at the very least, how to lock/unlock Story Test, Clean Mode, and 151 Mode. I don't know how to enable/disable specific story flags. Though, if I really wanted to figure it out, I probably could.
This game is very addicting. Im choosing to play this over modern warfare 3 tonight. It keeps you in suspense on what will happen next. Im trying to hook up with all of them. im about 3 hours into the game.
It really worries me how many people think of addictiveness as a quality... Are you sure you don't just enjoy the game?

Still, glad you find it to your liking, as much as I can get away with.
This is one of the most re-playable and enjoyable games that I have played in a long time. I tried out the version you had up last year and loved it, but even more so when I got to experiment around with setting up my own characters' stories and situations. I always wanted to learn how to program games but never really had the time or programs to do it, so when I finally saw MY script being played in the game, it was a fantastic feeling. As if the game wasn't already addicting enough from everything that you put into it. It's now a hundred times that much (which insanely amuses me because I love to write and Notepad++ is now my new favorite virtual tool).
Cutesy as it may be, I love this game with a passion.
Thanks for posting it.

Nice! Another addict!

Any chance you would submit this character of yours to the general community, MountainEyes?

As Marrend said, we'd be honored if you shared your content with us. And please, if you do, post it here first instead of the main site. Safety and whatnot.
From my perspective, addictiveness in a game is a virtual virtue, but a virtue nonetheless :)
I appreciate the comments!

I might just do that once I actually move beyond character sketches and figure out a proper theme. I'm a fairly decent writer and can spin out a story in no time, but when it comes to the tedious work to flesh the character out, I'm very much a novice. ^^;
So might take me a little while.

I've got the tachi drafts done. I'll upload an example over on the Content Creation (artistic) blog.
Hey, people. It is to the betterment of us that inform you of the fact I managed to seriously injure someone. Again. -.-'
So I might have less time to work on my projects and fullfill my duties here if I end up being treated, hospitalized or locked down(which, as it turns out, has become my usual, everyday business policy here). I will of course try my best to perform both to the best degree possible. Sorry for your trouble!T-T

...I do kind of keep one... under my pillow...*scared of all too fitting analogy*

And how do you picture me? It's not like you've seen me before. What do you think I look like? Guess!:D

I've received an interesting PM:

author=Alpinevelo
Hey, I have been playing your DLC for Heartache 101 recently, and I was wondering why the grammar is good with some of the new characters and completely incomprehensible for others. All I can think of is that it's a collaborative effort involving a few people how don't know English very well. For example with Seira there is a lack of punctuation and sound effects are mixed in with dialogue. The conversations aren't very hard to understand, but with Rika it's hard to understand anything that's happening. I just wanted to notify you of this just in case you had missed it before, but I'm sure that I am not the first to PM you about the matter. I would appreciate it if you fixed this.
Thanks,
-Alpinevelo

I have not made a response as of yet. Mostly because I'm not sure how responsible I am for the fixes mentioned here. I mean, I was aware that the "Midori" content was written by someone who did not have the best grasp of the English language. Seira? Well, I can't say I knew about that, but I think I might have suspected.

Anyway, we usually ask authors to fix up their own content. Thing is, LordNight (the maker of "Midori") is one of those people who we have had an unfortunate lack of communication with. As for triad (the maker of Seira), I can't say I've heard from him lately either. Which worries me, somewhat.

So, what am I getting at? Well, basically, what I want to know is how responsible are active authors are to content of authors who seem/are inactive? Actually, it might be more important to ask how would we even determine which authors are active/inactive?

I maintained contact with LordNight so far. He's merely busy with school and should come back to work when he has time. I can't say the same about Triad, but if anyone has to worry about his content's well being, it's me. I've made a promise to fix and enchance his packs; it is entirely my responsibility. I will also adopt his work, should he not come back.

I'd like to point out that these errors, mistakes and other shameful matters are the reason you cannot see LordNight's and Triad's handiwork on RMN's Finished Content page. The quantity over quality policy forbids us to refuse anyone's uploads however, which is why the official website allows pretty much anything, even unfinished or subpar content which is not simply pointless, but demeaning to us as a community(Seriously, people, what were you thinking?-.-). Flowerthief, since we reached the point where our users are complaining, we should put at least a cursory effort into examining custom content before it becomes accessible. This may be harsh, but I honestly say that if this goes on, we might become the VN-slash-RPG equalient of DeviantArt where picking a content pack to download amounts to Russian Roulette, the only difference being who the gun is pointed at.

As for active and inactive users, I propose that those who have not been seen on the forums for as much as the longest period of time as they spent contributing(a new period starts after a week of absence), are thereafter considered inactive and their work adoptable, should it not meet standards or is not finished. Also, an author can assign another to take care of the former's content in times to come. This of course requires the approval of the latter and the credit for it is divided fairly(which does not mean evenly) between the two, to avoid people rushing in with an idea, waltzing out and having us do the work for them.
