There is now a website you can use to share your custom content with other users! But you're still welcome to use this page to share and discuss content.

Below is a list of finished custom (user-made) content. To add these characters, in most cases you can extract the downloaded file to the game's main directory and you're set. Depending on how the author has organized them, it may be necessary to move files to the appropriate directories. (Custom content has not been tested by me)
Note: After new content has been added, old saves won't be compatible.

Ah yes, good idea.
Wasn't to sure where to ask this, but figured this was the most appropriate section. Does the character 21 Ways still work with the v1.2 build? As I keep getting an Error Character ID = 0 in profiles file '21_story.txt' is an invalid declaration. ID must be a number greater than 0... which makes sense I imagine. I did try my hand at modifying the file to switch the IDs to 21 like it is in the profile .txt but then was getting Invalid expectation on line 14 and Character ID = 21 is declared twice. So for now I guess I won't be able to play with her loaded, or attempted to load that is, since the first error also causes the game to close.

Edit: Nevermind the story file should be in Stories which I somehow missed before...
Yeah, for that one the files need to be moved to the appropriate directories. I wonder if dude797 would mind if I re-uploaded it with the files in the right places.

and i figured that its an error when attempting to use two profile files in one single story file

Yeah, there is only so much one can do of custom content listed here. I suppose either me or flowerthief could replace the ZIP files for 21 and/or Junko with files that have the correct directory structure on the other site, though. Not sure how helpful that would be, in an overall sense. It would certainly be less annoying for those more inclined to visit the other site rather than here.


*Edit: @LordNight: As in two separate profile files being used in the same story? I don't recall getting that error, but I might not have tested that particular functionality. For the moment, all I can say is to ensure that the profiles in question are somewhere in the "Profiles" sub-directory of Heartache 101. Also, be sure that the profile names are spelled correctly in the story file!

For future reference, bug reports are most probably best reported here.

Try putting the profile inclusions on the same line in your story file, separated by a comma. To use your own example, it should look something like:
m_profile.txt, game_profiles.txt


STORY 100
PLACE = Shrine
INTRODUCE = 20
# Continue with rest of story file


If you still get an error, you know where to go.
Thanks for reporting that. The game shouldn't be giving such an unfriendly error message.

I love the idea behind this game, and I really love how you make the content customizable. Really encourage me to continue working on the project that I've left untouched for so many years :)

I really want people to create content for this game, so I've created a syntax highlighting that works with Notepad++. Hopefully people will find it useful. The colors I chose are probably not the best in the world, but it's a start.

Usage :
- Download notepad++ from http://notepad-plus-plus.org/
- View -> User Defined Dialogue
- Import -> Choose heartache.xml
- Close User Defined Dialogue
- Language -> HeartAche

Those two lines together create a story with a condition that is impossible to fulfill, which means that the Story cannot be selected for play on its own (for instance, when the player lands on a story icon on the game board). However, since conditions are ignored when a Story is branched to, such as through the JUMP command, a Story with impossible conditions can still be played by branching from another story.

A common reason to do this is to mark that the player has picked a particular dialogue choice. Effectively you are creating a switch, or boolean variable. Since the scripting language lacks explicit variables or switches, you can make a Story act as a switch in this way.

If you keep looking through that file, I am sure you will find a later Story with CONDITION 20 DONE. This later story will not be played until the two-line story has been played. The two-line story is most likely branched to from an earlier story after a dialogue choice or something. Does that make sense?

@Lord Night: I'd explain it a tad differently that flowerthief. I'm not sure if it's less convoluted, but here goes. The code "STORY {NUMBER}" initializes a story event. Which is another way of saying that it begins a block of code. The line "CONDITION = {NUMBER} DONE" is an "if-then" statement that checks to see if the code associated with the number {NUMBER} has been executed. If it has been completed, the game goes to the next CONDITION line (if any), or continues with the STORY.

Thus, having a CONDITION reference a story ID that has not been completed, such as the story that is currently running, would cause the CONDITION to return "false". Likewise, having a CONDITION reference a story ID that has been completed would cause the CONDITION to return "true".


@hima: I'm sure there was talk about streamlining the crafting of custom story files, but nobody had any ideas as to how to go about it. Until now! I'm sure I won't be the only person to thank you for this.
in other words, those two lines separate a story to another story by placing in at the end of the branch or...

@LordNight: Seems to me that you're still somewhat confused. Let's see if there's a less convoluted way of saying this. Consider the code from your example again:
STORY 20

CONDITION = 20 DONE


What happens with this is that the engine sees "STORY" and says to itself "Okay, there's some kind stuff in here. Let's see what's up." The next line it reads, the engine would say to itself, "If I already did a story in this file with an identity of '20', I can continue. Did I already do a story with an identity of '20' yet? No. I get to skip this event."

Let's use another example:
STORY 4

CONDITION = 3 DONE


In this case, the engine might say to itself, "Here's a story with an identity of '4'. Did I already do a story with an identity of '3' yet? If so, I guess I'm doing this. Otherwise, I'm so outta here."

Things making more sense? More confusion in the ranks?

As a total side-note, I've now seen hima's Notepad++ program in action. It took a while to figure out what I needed to do to get it to work, but I eventually figured it out. I took a look at both already-made content ("masako_story.txt", no less), and did a test-drive with a new, albeit temporary, story file. I'm telling you, the visual cues this program presents would have been a huge help when I was making custom content!

Since it would more probably appear on the other site, I've half a mind to have screenshots a-plenty of how to work Notepad++, the contents of the Notepad++ window as I write this character's story, the game window as I test the story, etc.

I'm glad you guys like the syntax highlighting! As for using Notepad++, it might be a bit difficult for non-coder to set up the syntax highlighting and everything.

I think there's a Notepad++ portable version. We might be able to include Heartache script syntax highlight in that portable version, and then let people download that version instead. So that their downloaded Notepad++ will already come with Heartache script syntax highlight, and they can start working on writing the story right away.

Notepad++ does have a 7zip/zip version, but that one includes everything, which might not be useful for the people who are just going to use this for Hearthache. So what I did is download the installer version and installed it using these settings:

Auto-completion Files: Off (this is for other languages)
Plugins: Spell-Checker + Plugin Manager
Localization: All On
Themes: All On
Auto-Updater On
User Manual: On

Don't use %APPDATA%: On (else it would be places in the wrong place)
Other 3: Off

The settings I didn't mention, like Context Menu Entry and such aren't relevant because those settings are independent off the program.


Alternatively, people can also just download & install Notepad++ the normal way and just add this file:

I added english names to all the layers and put them in folders so hopefully it will be easier to use. I'm also putting a link to it here, hopefully it will make the step to using it to create custom content smaller.

Personally speaking, I uploaded the executable and applied "heartache.xml" separately. However, having a short-cut like this would grant greater accessibility.

I think I might have recently referenced a translation that was done by dude797 somewhere earlier in this thread. But that translation was not applied to the base model, but was basically an "end product" translation for a specific character. Long story short, we could probably use the quick reference.

Saying this, I've no access to change the main contents on this sub-page. Only flowerthief has that access. However, I can download these things, and make them accessible on the alternate site for the game. Presuming I have the permission from hima and/or Turtle, that is!
