Ever had a dream that you just can't explain, or would simply prefer not to? Meet Francesca, and lead her through the adventures of her subconscious!

Personal background:
Totally not a reference to this game.

I was thinking about the event's theme ("surrealism"), and I was going through some thoughts about how to work with it. Then, it hit me: dreams. Dreams are the window to the subconscious. And can get pretty surreal, when they want to be.

Running with that idea, each of the game's three chapters (if not three chapters, then at least three sections) are based on dreams I've actually had (though the specific details of said dreams are sketchy at best).

Latest Blog

Update!

As the title of the blog suggests, there is a new version of Weird Dreams ready to be downloaded.

What's changed:
The number of enemies wandering on the maps that have been cut significantly. I have also made enemies less difficult in general. The experience curve isn't as crazy as it was. I expect players to go not terribly much higher than level 15, even if they choose to grind. Unless they are absolutely in love with the VX DBS. There is also a change to the title screen. Thanks go out to NOACCEPTANCE722 for the artwork!

What still needs to be done:
Even if I'm wrong about the difficulty being fixed for however many times I've claimed that the difficulty's been fixed, I don't think I have it in me to work on this any more.

Where to get it:
1) The downloads tab. It's the one simply marked "Weird Dreams".
2) Click the "Download" button on this page
3) Click the "Download now!" button.

In other news:
I've played all the contest entries except I'm Scared of Girls. Probably high-time to change that.

To quote the movie Excalibur:
Arthur: Is that all you are, now, Merlin? A dream?
Merlin: A dream? To some. A nightmare to others!
This seems pretty cool. I'm one person controlling like 3 people. My friends are friends, then enemies. Is this a weird dream, or a nightmare.

Thanks for the compliments myformerselves! As for your question, I've not considered returning to the premise of dreams, nor is it my intention to. However, if I did return to that premise, I would once again make an attempt to question the boundary between dreams and reality.
Hey Marrend, I've see you've authored quite a few games. You've obviously a lot of determination. Have you ever considered returning to the premise of dreams? I particularly enjoy work of a dreamlike sensibility. :)

@Evergaurd: The most recent download should have that bug fixed, though I'm uncertain if the save files are at all compatible.

*checking game anyway*

Yeah, that bug's been squished.

*Edit: Level 40 at the first boss fight before the latest re-balancing!? That's quite a bit of grind, friend! You should get an
ACHIEVEMENT!
Regarding that first boss, I grinded (Ground?) to level 40, but then I stepped on the portal, left the cabin, and my class permanently reverted from the Heroine to the normal one (With only physical attacks) so I really couldn't play any longer. I don't know if you had fixed that issue in the latest download, but if not it isn't too late :)
Going to play this and type up a review. Will let you know when it's submitted.

Update: changed my mind but it's a good game!

New download is up for the RTP-reliant version! Monsters are re-balanced to be easier overall, and finding where the map transfer points are is a bit easier.

I don't know if there's going to be another update or no, but after the event is said and done, I intend to blog about what dreams I've had that were incorporated into the making of this game.

My preference is the indication, as that's less work (I don't have to re-draw maps), and I'm lazy like that.

In that case I wouldn't put arrows or that kind of thing, but things or other that obstruct the way, show clearly that there's no going out that way (I thought that was bad design), so that you're not a dog on a leash but neither in a place that makes no sense.

Why should a player have to hunt for a map exit? That's terrible design. That I didn't think of putting in an indication before is a remission on my part.

" I suppose I should mark all exits on each map "
Frankly, for that part , watching the LT, i found the player a bit inattentive (maybe going too fast ?), the exits are really not difficult to find (you just have to try every possible one, like in any rpg), or where's the game ?!But yes, do definitely easy the foes and bosses and re-upload it, the problem is not only having more fun, but simply being able to play the game all the way through (also storywise, this seems essential!).
Fixing and re-submitting is certainly not only allowed, but I'd say encouraged. Getting done early allows you to spend time on precious beta testing and revisions - that's an advantage you'll have over most that I'd use as much as you can.

From my view, the difficulty isn't technically a mistake. The numbers I crunched to get the critters where they are said so, though the "average Joe" test obviously has them harder than what the raw numbers suggested. Anyway, I now know that the difficulty is an obstruction to any potential enjoyment that can be had.

Technically, I could go back and do battle tests with the enemies and tweak numbers until the critters have the correct "feel" to their difficulty. Sounds like quite the pain-staking process, and those tests might not yield accurate results either (as they are based on my opinion).

In the end, I just don't know how to call the difficulty. I do want to make it easier, more fun, or at least less of an obstruction to the overall entertainment value in the game. However, as I've said before, I had fun with it, despite the harsh amount of grinding I had to do. Then again, this is my game, and am therefore much more forgiving of it's faults than I probably should be.

*Edit: Not knowing where the exits for the "cliff" maps are I can see as points of frustration. I'll admit to that. Not sure what indicators to use, as the arrow tiles used for the "jump points" are reserved (in a fashion). I'll look into it.

Damn it, why am I getting this kind of feedback now? I guess I'm less queasy about updating the "official" download, but I would have preferred to have this feedback earlier. Whatever. I've gotta get working on the re-balance and immediate mapping issues. I suppose I should mark all exists on each map for consistency's sake, right?

As long as it's not past the deadline, what's the harm in updating the version of your game? I don't personally see any problems with that.

I watched the LT and I was kind of shocked as to how hard it was 0_o'. I mean, it's even harder than two-lips island! I think you would do the right thing in rebalancing the battles. Also, if the game is short, are you sure it's a good idea to have to grind so much? Just some things to consider.

Also: have you thought about putting arrows to guide the poor guy around? He had no idea where he could leave a map and that must have been a bit frustrating.

" I get the strong sensation that uploading an update into the stand-alone version that I've already submitted to the event would be cheating. But that's just my way of thinking."
Frankly, if, after uploading his/her demo, the participant realizes he's made a big mistake, I'm almost sure he would fix it and have it replace the older version (you realize, most people will not be able to go through the game). Unless, of course, you don't consider it a misstake. Also, principles are undiscussable. I would think about it though (especially after that LP), it's somewhat of a pity, don't you think ?

Personally, I've never bothered to face the first boss until Level 30. Which, perhaps, is more grinding that an average player would probably attempt. Even then, it felt like the victory was more based on luck rather than skill. I dunno how to call this, has I did have something of a rush ("YESSSS!" moment, if you will) after defeating him.

"Hey everybody, it's a boss Boshe!"

In more seriousness, I went to level 30 because I knew that's when "Concencentration" was learned. That's a combat-only skill that restores mana to the user. I figured the I wanted to get the player into a position of semi-self-reliance. Also, he's "supposed" to be built for a level 30 character anyway.

Sometimes, knowing stuff about a game is a disadvantage!

Anyway, while I could do yet another critter re-balance, I get the strong sensation that uploading an update into the stand-alone version that I've already submitted to the event would be cheating. But that's just my way of thinking.

*Edit: I was considering giving the player a health absorption effect to help balance the boss fights (or just help in general), but I couldn't find a way to give the proper flavor for that effect for the character archetype(s) that would get it.

With the LT, I see better the good points, of which the deck of cards , the way the character evolves to new situations, somewhat unaware, and, I think, the idea (or I get the feel of the idea) you had for your game, and it is intriguing; I would like to see the end (or simply the following). If only you had made those monsters and bosses less hard, why not easy... What was your idea for making them sooo hard ?
Wait, I'm guessing the game size rise was due to the inclusion of the RTP? I'm stupid.

Anyways, similar to psy_wombat's let's try, I made it to the first boss fight...Except that I had grinded my way to level 22, and I still was no match for him. That, and my healing spells healed less then the amount of damage he did.

Anyways, intriguing so far. I like the writing, and the ideas, especially with the way the main character did the change, alongside the way she changes back to her normal self when she enters a house. If/when I finish it, I'll write a proper review...At the moment, I don't feel like grinding to beat the first boss.
Here's an LT for you.

Didn't get as far in as I would've liked but uh, that wasn't really an option.
