Back in July Ben_Random was reading through the RMN forums and something caught his eye. It was the RM2k3 Mapping contest. This was a simple contest where you had to use the select chipset to make a map in 2k3. While looking at this, Ben_Random thought, "People often complain about the RMVX RTP chipset, I wonder what we could do with it if we all tried our hardest."

Thus, the "What can you do with Squares" contest was born. This contest went well (almost 23 participants!), but then ShortStar said, "Would if we compiled these things into a game?" After many messages, ShortStar and Ben_Random decided that they would make two more contests, one for dungeons, and one for towns. These contests are currently in action, and once they are done, select maps will go into a game being compiled by Ben_Random and ShortStar. The purpose of this game is not the gameplay, the purpose is the maps...

Soon, there will be a list of all the maps in the game here. For now, here are links to each of the contests:

Cancelled... for now

Because of the lack of participants in the "What can you do with Squares: Dungeon&Town Editions" VX RTP Mapping Contest, ShortStar and Ben_Random have decided to cancel the project.

The deadline for the two contests has been changed to September 2nd, but by the looks of it, I don't think that postponing the deadline will change anything.

As for this project, there is one hope left to put it back in production:
SUBMIT BY SEPTEMBER SECOND!

That is because you are a lead developer.

So all those people with maps for the building contest should give ben_random their map.

I didn't think we were using the maps from the original contest in the game.
But we could if people let us.

Man, I deleted that vote I send off to Ben_Random too soon! I'm going off sheer memory with my commentary on the images!

I still have your vote:

Short-short version:

#1: Rhyme
#2: Scourge
#3: PentagonBuddy

Long version, complete with hide tag tech:

Ben_Random
I like the waterfall effect this map has.

blademage1234
This is a weird perspective, but I think I see where this wants to go.

chana
Empty map overall, but it's in the desert. Hard to call.

Cornix
This is pretty cool.

drakiyth
I like how the entryway effect is done in this screen.

Far_Oz
Church-y feel from this. Only un-cool thing is the near-bottom where the tiles aren't aligned.

Kentona
Very nice decor!

kitten2021
Quaint scene!

ldida1
This is a decent enough map.

LaudableDread
This is a decent showing.

Lennon
I like the semi-cobbled road that leads to the inn.

Liberty
I like how the water sparkles (or the illusion thereof), giving a "summer day" feel to this screen.

LivingEffigy
I like how this screen flows.

Marrend
I'd be surprised if I get any votes, considering.

Miss_Marple
Cool!

Ocean
"Layer upon layer, make your mark now! Haste!" Though, now that I mention it, this layering effect is kinda messing with me.

PentagonBuddy
Sandcastle!? That's... an interesting way of doing it. Aside from that, this is cool too!

psy_wombats
That hallway leading to the main desk still messes with my mind.

Rhyme
Whoa! Impressive!

Scourge
Very nice!

Seangrei
The emptiest tavern in the world. Maybe that's the point, though?

Space_Monkey
I'm not getting the Escher vibe like I'm supposed to. Sorry!

ShortStar
Simple, but effective!

Copy-pasted into a text file! Going to keep it this time 'round, should other samples from the original contest show up.

Side note: The only image I messed up on was the one from PentagonBuddy. Going to edit the post for accuracy...
Sigh, I want to go back to School, the holidays are boring... But now I have a contest to compete in! I hate dungeons, so I am doing a town!

always a dudesoft, never a soft dude.

So you're going to add people who submit as developers right? So we get our makerscore?

Umm... Well...

You only would be making a couple maps, plus ShortStar and I would be designing the real game play. Anyway, you still get achievements for participating in the game. If anything, I think artist would be a good position.

Summing it up:
If a couple more people say that they want in on the whole "developer" thing, ShortStar and I will talk about it.
Its a contest. Win the contest and you'll get more marketshare :-)

If you're looking for more marketscore, write tutorials, review games :-) You can probably do both just as quickly.

Wait. Did you just say "marketscore"...

I thought I knew you ShortStar.
Eh I don't even know what it is. Don't really care either. Some people do it to do it.

Well you better care, because I've decided that makerscore is going to be the currency in this game!

B-but... markerscore is life!

More serious: I don't care about gaining markerscore from this project. If any of my stuffs get used at all, I just want the proper credit given.

I'm laughing at this comment.
Proper credit will be given. I can even make signs with your names saying Marrend made this or that :-)

Since I will putting the game world together, I thought I can have an NPC in every town saying: "A long time ago, Marrend founded this marvelous city". Or if they participated in the old contest I could name the inn/shop after the user who created it. If they made a dungeon I could have an NPC say: "Legend tells that only one other person has gone into that cave. He was a brave adventurer name ShortStar."
