"As you have probably figured out, Mistuya, I am not from your world. I'm not even from this 'other world', as you may call it. Listen to my story. The story of why, or how we got here. And why we know what we know. Perhaps, just perhaps, you too can understand.

It started with Sataro. Those countless years ago..."

This prequel game gives background information on Mina, Vatma, and, perhaps, how the mess of Matsumori Days got started. It does not attempt to answer all queries, but it is my hope that some will be answered!

Personal Background:

I can't pinpoint an exact date, but during my stint of making games with RPG Maker 2000, my brother made an unfinished title called Summoner. It was probably deleted, though. What this game does is honor the memory of Summoner. To a degree, anyway.
Some personal touches puts this into the Matsumori Days multiverse (if that's the term for it). I do, however, make references to Summoner near the beginning of this game (as there wasn't much to Summoner to begin with).

Well, okay. There's probably going to be a bunch of things that could probably use some fixing. Grammar fixes, probably. Particularly at the end-game, as I was in a bit of a rush to push this out. However, there's no more story that I feel a need to include in this game. Which is "complete" enough for me! So, let's celebrate this frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!

Anyway, if you have old saves from the last demo, they should, in theory, be compatible with this version. I've never really tested this, so I can't really say one way or another. I won't go as far as to say that saves from the original demo, from whenever it was ago that I released it, would be compatible with this. However, it would be somewhat humorous if it were true!

Happy gaming and I shall see you when I get around to Uchioniko!

Haha I meant since Arbiters was really being worked on, not since you joined here. Good to know though, I'll be watching for it.
I was very very pleased to find music from "Tales of Phantasia" in this game! Good work.I enjoyed it a lot!

If you liked this, there's a possibility you might enjoy the other games in the series too! The links are on the top portion of the page. I must note that Konae Detective Agency is still being worked on, though.

As a side-note, I almost forgot I used "The Mysterious Ja''p''on" here! I knew about "Slyph's Mountain", as I might have been building that map along with my map submission for The Here and Now of Yesterday, and I used it for that map as well. I must have been on something of a mood to use that song? Anyway, the only other game I use Tales of Phantasia music for is this one, and even then, it's rather late-game.

hmm last comment was in 2013 pity some games just kind of...lack attention :/
it could be maybe due to the bosses/enemies having too much life for a casual player.

anyway i came across a apparent bug which you probably cant fix anymore that stops me from progressing the game
once i reach this spot on the world map i cant go in any direction all i can do is reload

note that in the story

your no supposed to have Rasuna and the old man with you because your looking for them but they are in your party

i did the command correctly and re checked it but for some reason the above post wont look like it is supposed to
so overall game thoughts now

Random thoughts

spites are pretty off from there avatars

like the triggers in the main square, cool how you see students travling like that!

Mina front gate what does "benign" mean?

world map classic mario style! : D

holy shi that xp gain! 1 battle = 5 lvls!

but minas a adept she has experience in combat right? why would she be lvl 1? XD

she also has basic gear!?

Sataro obtains way to many skills

Kido after test she was not be be

gonna give up on grammar issues too many :3

in port hideki they say kuramoto coast is NE but its NW

i really like how fast the inn rest is! no music or fade out!

difficulty goes up pretty fast get to that grinding! : D

Rasuna is godly : O

Overall

the plot was pretty meh for me until the events at the ancient tower
the spirits would of been interesting but there was never honestly a reason for you to fight and obtain there power storywise
for my taste Sataro and Rasuna had way to many skills(20+)
i liked the equipment :3
the characters were pretty likeable

as boss fights are pretty brutal and unavoidable
id more recommend this for grinders then casual players
and that the game "may" not be beatable due to the above mentioned glitch

have a good day and thank you for your time :3

I'll have to confirm this bug you mention considering movement on that map. You should be able to get to that town, and back up to that forest, if nowhere else. As for the other thing you mention...

From what Sataro says...

Sataro: Ichiro and Rasuna are nearby. I don't know about Shirai, Chojiro, or Vatma, however.

...I wager they are supposed to be together.

Also-also: "Benign" means "not aggressive".

*Edit: I have no idea why these two posts are like this. I don't have any CSS going down!

*Edit2: Funny story. A man in Port Hideki is misidentified after being told to go to Kuramoto Coast. So, I'm gonna have to update this anyway, world-map-bug or no.

Game updated!

The bug shayoko told me about was found, confirmed, and squished! Outside of that, I saw a few mistypes (I mentioned one of them) that have also been fixed.

It's never too late for a bug report!

*Edit: For full disclosure, the bug shayoko came across was a move-route bug. It was trying to move the player into a virtual wall. So, it fails to move, but the script to move was still there, the box to ignore impossible movement wasn't checked, and... yeaaaaah. Derp.

I'll give my feedback later, as I've just got the Water Spirit, so I'm pretty early in the game, but I just want to say:

Yeeeeeees! I am really liking this so far! Almost every problem I had with Matsumori Days has been solved here. The enemies are quick to dispatch, you level up quickly enough so that there's no grinding really necessary, and the story is definitely interesting.

Satoro and Mina already have more character depth than any of the party members in Matsumori Days.

Still a little sad about the lack of variety in the enemies, but I'm too happy about the other fixes to let this get me down. So far, this is a great game!

So I finally finished it. Here are my thoughts:

Every problem I had with Matsumori Days has been solved here... for the most part. I was having a great time until I got to the Ancient Tower, when the enemies suddenly skyrocketed in difficulty. My party got wiped out on the first few turns, not allowing me any chance to react.

And then it just got worse when I got to the Korn Tribe Outpost. But seeing as that was I was FAR too low level, and this was a game clearly designed over grinding, I can't really take points off for that. (For the record, I beat the game at level 35, with Rasuna at level 39.)

Stun-locking was still a good strategy, however, I noted that Silence was a far more effective method of dealing with everyone. Since Mute never wears off, you can cripple any enemy, boss or no, if you manage to hit them with it.

The story was much stronger than in Matsumori Days. It's like you traveled into the future and read my mind and predicted EXACTLY what I would complain about and fix it EXACTLY the way I suggested: Less characters, more development. As a result, Sataro and Mina had much more of an impression on me than all the cast of Matsumori combined.

The one exception being Ichiro. There wasn't really any point of him being there, story-wise. Well, except right at the end, when he was transported into the new world. But other than that, he didn't really contribute to the story. Now, if there were some hints regarding Ichiro's life when he was at his prime, that'd be a different story.

I encountered zero bugs or glitches here. I may have seen the glitches Shayoko pointed out if I had the older copy, but I downloaded the latest version when I started this feedback.

Overall, I really liked this game. It felt more polished, refined, and focused. It only got to the grind-y annoyances at the end, so I had plenty of time to enjoy the journey. I really wished I had played this game first, since now I can see Matsumori Days in a new light.

Now that I've played both games, I'm just gonna finish off by saying how mad I will be at you if Konae's Investigations ends up being cancelled for good.

Responses ahoy:

Anecdote: I killed off Chojiro with a Doom on my play-through of this game when I was bug-checking. It dealt 1700-ish damage, but, I did not get the impression that it was the damage that killed him off. Also, I'm appreciating Bad Breath (when Rasuna is casting it) a lot more than I used to.

With that out of the way, I knew that Ichiro went insane/senile through not quite getting the Rite of Summoning down, but before that? Yeah, no clue. Though, one of my favorite lines from the source material (the now-defunct RPG Maker 2K game my brother made back in the day, Summoner) was something to the effect of "The best part of being a crazy old man is that I forgot everything I ever knew!" and not being the slightest bit ironic about it. I dunno, I just thought it was hilarious, and wanted to include that in here. Anyway, maybe I could have relegated him to a support character, or created some moments where his former self shines through, if I thought about what kind of person he was, and stuff like that.

I'm glad this was enjoyable for you, and that you're looking forward to Konae's Investigations. Now all I need to do is figure out what, exactly, I want to do with that game again!

Before I randomly forget (again!), I came across an interesting thing some time ago. The way the video is titled is a tad weird to me, but, it puts a small smile on my face.
Umm... Why can't we comment on the Walkthrough Page?

'Cause I've got a sadness and a typo to report:

Sadness: Student!Sataro's skills aren't used anywhere else, so in order to see them, we need to grind lots. ... Unless the same animations are used elsewhere, or this game can be opened by other peoples' RPG Makers... But, it's got that .rvproj, so I guess it can...

Typo: "Adept" as "Adpet", unless that was on purpose, as Adpet is perfectly pronounceable...

I swear I allowed comments to be made on the walkthrough? Nope, I didn't. FIXED!

Anyway, while the skills Student-Sataro may look like that...

There's very little chance anyone would have the patience to grind hard enough to see him get any new abilities. Though, I think he manages well enough with what little he has.

Then again, don't I say in the "Final Thoughts" section in the manual that nobody reads...

If you want to hack the game, even going so far as to fool around with the editor, go for it. I might not be able to support errors that occur from a hacked game, but I support any action that allows players to have as much enjoyment as possible.

Yeah, but it's basically an Easter Egg that only hackers or hardcore grinders will see. But, then again, that's pretty normal.

Does Summoner!Sataro have the same skills as Student!Sataro, and you just listed the new ones? Or is that a replacement of his whole skill set?

Well, I guess I'll find out once I get that far!
Oh, total replacement... Well, that makes things more difficult, with that lack of elemental versatility... And confusing, as I don't see why he'd forget his spells...

Oh! HEY! A Manual! If my icon made it look less like an ini file, I would have noticed it... Maybe...

"refelect" for "reflect"?

"reffer" for "refer"

Sataro's skills should be a straight-up replacement. Also, while I'm thankful for the spell-checking, would you mind compiling a list and PMing it to me instead?

As for possible fixes to the game proper, while I don't have VX on my current computer (I don't want to get too much into this story here), I can still use my old computer (it's about one year older than my RMN profile!) to make corrections. However, I'm not sure how long I can afford to hold onto it!

*nods* Makes sense.
Well, I haven't finished the game, but I'll make some notes here since I found my first bug...

If I talk to the Okoko Mountain Monk from the right, the monk on the second screen, the dialogue plays, and then I can't move, presumably since the monk is supposed to move to the right, and I've blocked him.

Typo:

Kido: "Aoki being so found", 'found' -> 'fond'

Notes:

After doing the Summoning, there are no hints that going to bed is what's needed to advance the plot. I think...

Could you trap yourself by running out of Geld-Pasil and so you can't pay an inn to heal you? Although, that's Unwinnable By Insanity... And not expected to be fixed unless you want to Think of Everything...

It's not bad, other than the balancing issues, which you've already noticed, but that's not a deal breaker for me. Given that this is the prologue of a series it's not that bad... Wow... That's feels like It's Not Supposed to Win Oscars... Sorry... Well, I guess I'll agree with Muninn's review by the end of this.

Perhaps you can move VX onto your new computer? Just copy all the files over, maybe?

From what you're describing about the monk guarding the entrance of Order of the Bull Fist, it does sound like a move-route bug.

I assume you mean after doing the Rite with the Earth Spirit, and after returning to Yokoki? Or, maybe, you mean after being booted out of the school, and needing to change clothes. I feel like the latter event is the less obvious one, and would cause some head-scratching.

I don't recall how much inns cost, so I can't really comment on the "Unwinnable By Insanity" quip in regards to not having enough money to pay for inns. Though, if players ever get to the Order of the Bull Fist (you were SO CLOSE!), there is free resting there. One of the many reasons to "Set" a Beacon there, to be sure!

As for fixes, I seriously doubt it's as simple as copying over the files? I mean, I have the game-files, and VX's RTP installed on my current computer. Just not the engine itself. When last I tried to install the engine, the program was looking for a 25-character-long validation key. Mine, being nine (or so) years old, was, like, 5 characters short. Anyway, I send a support ticket, but, there hasn't been a response yet. Though, I would admit that I was trying to do this back when MV was brand-spanking new, so that might have gummed up the works a bit!

*Edit: Though, in all honesty, I might tend toward doing fixes on my old 'puter, and transferring from there. As long as I have this option, I might as well use it!

Oh, yeah! I just reset and did it again, and the guy does move to the right.

Yeah, but even in the very beginning, you have to go rest before you get the assignment to go to the ruins, I think.

The inns cost 10GP. The Sassa and Port Hideki ones are 10GP.

On that note, sorta, the training monk in the weapons' sales room is pretty tough! ... I guess we get to buy those Elemental Attack Gems, (Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, Turquoise.), on the second Bull Order Upgrade event?

Also the Desert has free recovery too! ... Can you skip the Fire Spirit, I wonder... I don't have a save far enough away to check, but that's just idle musing.

Rambling...

(Assuming you have Windows here...)

I mean like going into where the RPG Maker VX program files are like in Program Files/RPG Maker VX or whatever, and just putting that on a jump-drive or something, and moving it to your new computer.

There might be some registry things that are needed to be done, but then you can use regedit to look for registries that say "VX" or "RPG Maker VX" or whatever and replicate it on your new machine.

Perhaps ask on the RPG Maker Web Forums, or the forums here, about this stuff?

It's not like you're pirating or something... And it seems to work for most/all of my programs. Using registry entries as registration checks doesn't seem to be a common practice?

It's not like the program will lock you out if you try and copy it. But, I'm not you.

Taking out the hard drive and plugging it into your new computer is also something that might be done, if you feel up to it... But, I'm rambling here...

I'm not sure if players can skip the Fire Spirit? I might have set it up so that the exit would send players back to square one unless they defeat it. I'd have to look into the game to be certain.

Be aware that the monk in the training room "levels up" at various points in the game. There's hopefully helpful strategies (depending on which version you're fighting) in the walkthrough, if you're interested!

*Edit: To the best of my knowledge, players don't need to rest before meeting with Mina. Though, again, I would have to double-check this against what's in the game.
