Mana: A quality product!

Gourd Clae Reviews

~Prenote~
Finding Eden is a smallish yet beautiful game. Its final score doesn't suffer from much, and I rather enjoyed it. I'm using a newer formatting for my reviews-kinda like new avatar, new format. There will be spoilers so beware. I personally CAN'T keep spoilers out of my reviews. I just can't. Especially since this game is so short. Not that this is a bad thing-in fact, it's supposed to be so short since it was entered into a contest that required it to be able to be beaten in a half an hour. So, mission accomplished.

Well, let's begin with search and analysis. Mainly analysis.

~Gameplay~

Battles: Battles are realtime and there are exactly 4 different enemies you can encounter-all of which are required for you to beat the game. You can use 'J' to use skills, and space to attack. Now although it is rather inconvenient to have abilities set this way, the strategy I use in most battles doesn't require quick changing from one key to the next so I'm fine with it. Though, some people may not like this, so I'd suggest changing it to a different key, perhaps Q as Solitayre has suggested before. I rather liked how boss battles were hectic and difficult to some degree without a strategy. But, if you take into account what you can do, they can be reduced to mere mudpuppies! My complaints would mainly be the lag(that may just be me). The fact that the controls do feel kind of goofy at first(I'm not sure if you could fix this, though. Plus, this is only in the beginning). you don't see that many enemies. Could you add more? Perhaps in the fight with the violet-haired woman(creative naming here-just kidding!).

Real quick thing about mana: I like how resting takes away mana like suggested. Other than that, I'm thinking this is a pretty well suited and executed battle system.

Exploration:Exploring in this game definitely pays off. Be it either a mana supply, or alittle backstory about the 2 protagonists, you will be rewarded. Thank you, this game really needed it since it's so short. Also, you have to explore. The game doesn't tell you exactly what to do(maybe you should fix that), but throws you right into the fray. I like that, though others might not(hence the suggestion to "fix" it).

Rewarding exploration-good job!

This is the first thing you see. How beautiful! I really love this game's artsyle! Also, I demand to know why this is named "trap"!

~Graphics\Mapping~
Mmmm. Beautiful. This is where this game shines, well, other than the story, but we're not there yet!

In the beginning, you get the lovely image above, and another one after you beat the game. Both of which, coincidentially, are both "Red's" face, and in one, she's waking you up(kind of)and in the other you're putting her to sleep. I'm betting you planned it that way. Or I might just be talking out of my ass, who knows? As for the mapping, there's very little wrong with it. Though, I found a passability error in the bottom right corner of the city. I liked how most everything was gray, but things with mana had color. Nice touch, I like it. The portraits are nice too, but the blue-haired protagonist looks sad all the time-could you fix that? Also, know what I just realized? There is alot of rain in this game! Is this connected to the loss of mana, or just a stylish design choice? I'm guessing it's just a stylish design choice!

Like I said-beautiful!

MANA GET! Yeah, that's just plain awesome.

~Music\Sounds~

I like the music in this game(where it is at least). Maybe put it in more places? Really, music is used sparingly, and really puts more emotion into the really important scenes. Though, you still could have used more. And, I think music is super quiet (this may be just me). Not much to say about the music. By the way, is it custom? I think it is. Nothing too special about the sound effects.

~Plot\Characters~

I'm probably going to come across as nitpicky-sorry!

So, you're woken up by Red(that's what I'm gonna call the red haired protagonist) and you're Blue(what I'm calling the blue-haired protagonist). She seems like a pretty stand-up person. Blue and Red go to this shed to sleep and Blue talks about being thankful to Red. Red says she should be thankful of Blue. This isn't explained, but is very interesting. Later, they meet up with some blonde guy who claims Red is as good as a harvester, and she pretty much is. I mean against the violet haired lady, they take her mana! What?! Why?! Because her opinion was different than theirs?! Red had her reasons for harvesting for Blue, but there's no excuse for harvesting that one lady. Blue is truly the better of the two, as she's the one who goes on to find the mana deposit. That is, if she did-I hope she did! Don't expand upon the story, though. It's perfect the way it is what with all the mystery and stuff!

I like it!

This is called lasers and lesbians2-I'm not even kidding! Are they really? Or just something funny you named the picture?

~Prelude~
All in all a nice little game about friendship after the end of the world-just as it's described! Don't expand upon this like I said earlier, and I hope you guys enjoyed the review!

That's the way a game(and a review is done)!
