I decided to make something that I would enjoy making. No, it's not your typical game. This game is an open world, nonlinear free-roaming RPG. One large map of a city to explore, with many buildings to go into. Go to the beach, stay at the inn, talk with the citizens, and even do criminal activities.

The game is one of those "try everything" games. As a stranger in the city, you can pretty much do anything. Watch TV, pickpocket citizens, steal from mailboxes, rob a bank, find a hidden switch that lets you change the weather..

It's a dating sim. It's an adventure game, with quests. It's lots of different games rolled into one.

The game has "guest characters" or "easter eggs" to find throughout the game. From playing as Captain Jack, to playing as Voldemort. There are plenty of things to find.

You could just explore the city, get married, and stay on the light side. Or, you could steal, hire a prostitute, and buy drugs. The game allows players to do what they want, without a story. It encourages players to write their own story.

I wanted to use the default RTP graphics, with some extra sets I've found on the internet. I wanted a classic Gameboy retro style, with colorful flare.

This is also my most technically advanced game.

Features:
-Play the main map in color, or black and white.
-Day/Night system with Day, Dusk, Night, and Dawn. Time advances as you play.
-Large map to explore.
-Islands that can be found via transportation.
-Shops
-Plenty of NPC's to chat with.
-Two NPC's the player can date. One female, one male. Gender doesn't matter. So gay and lesbian relationships are possible.
-Compatibility with Windows XP/Vista/7 and Linux via WINE.

Some new features have been added to the game. First off, moving transparent clouds. This gives off the feeling of watching the city from above. It also makes the graphics pop.

Also added, a clock. The clock can be accessed any time during the game by hitting the shift key. It displays the game's fictional time, and also the actual real time the player has spent playing the game.
Seems pretty interesting but how does the gameplay work? You mention stuff like robbing a bank and doing drugs, how will these effect gameplay? Is there a bank robbing minigame? Do the drugs increase/decrease your stats? Just curious.
Robbing a bank will be like a level/quest. Just like the Haunted House. Once you go in, you must finish it. There's a chance you could succeed, by making the right choices, or you could be arrested.

As for the drugs, drugs decrease the players health. I plan on adding in some stats that will increase with certain drugs as well.

EDIT: Some of the quests, are also puzzles. Like being trapped in a room, and figuring a way out.

This video shows the player releasing animals, by opening gates. The farmer reacts to the player opening the gates.

If you want to simulate drug addiction you could have the players' health temporarily take a massive boost on drugs but then go down alot lower than what it was before, making the player decide between getting another massive HP boost due to how gimped his HP is now or quitting while he still has money to spare.

Yeah, good concept. That's similar to what I have planned.
With the game now 90% done, closed beta testing has begun.
This game seems like one big experiment. Is it?
No. It's just not a game for everyone. But if you're into completing quests or playing dating sims, this game has both.

EDIT: It's a mix of things to do, in an open world.

Story idea sounds really interesting.
Guest characters from pop culture are being added as easter eggs. Who's next..
The project now has a name, and a logo.

Needs more stuff to do. Robbing the bank didn't really take much effort. I thought this game's theme was consequences? Kinda like in the fable games.

The first game was a basic test of what could become a series of these games. I like how the game has turned out, and the few minor bugs will be fixed in the next update. The main theme is freedom, but with consequences. In future games, I'd probably add in more quests, and missions.
