New Version 3.35

The downloads section has been updated with a new full version and patch. Mostly bug fixes, but the controller support is sweet for those of us using Xbox controllers with Windows (thanks to PepsiOtaku for that plugin). Here's the update notes:

Everlong 3D



Behold, Tyr-Anon Castle in glorious blocky three dimensions! This just a proof of concept, but it still took hours to create using RMMV and the mv3d plugin. It would be an immense undertaking to recreate maps with this process, and there's so many frustrating limitations. It's interesting to play around and see what's possible, though.

Pandemic Patch v3.34B

With the covid-19 pandemic resulting in a significant amount of working from home on my part, I've had time to invest in game bug fixes, quality of life improvements, and tinkering. Here's a link to the new patch.

No full package update as I'm still not confident I didn't break something with this or preceding patches. There were lots of weird DynRPG plugin issues and database corruption I had to deal with. There also hasn't been any testing feedback, so maybe there aren't any current players to enjoy these improvements, but considering there were some game breaking bugs present, I felt the need to release a patch. I'm often playing with proof of concept DynRPG plugins, but I'm not sure if there's interest in official releases in the future.

Here's some visuals of the main quality of life improvements: menu and battle gauges, a hunt info bar, and equip/shop item compare info.

Fixed a bug where leftover debug code would reset primary quest tracking variable on Libra skill use, displaying the wrong story page in the journal and potentially breaking the main quest

Quick Patch v3.34A

Small new patch that addresses a few issues available here: CLICK FOR DOWNLOAD

This update also includes a couple little extras from my DynRPG tinkering, though players who inspect the database may see far more than is actually implemented. I'm hoping none of these additions currently written into my DynTag plugin will cause issues, but players please let me know if I've overlooked bugs.

Here's a list for the curious of DynRPG functions I've created but not yet integrated into the game:

*Steal, pilfer, mug skills; steal common or rare items, money; success rate increases with steal failure to avoid excessive attempts; variable success rate; affected by Duplicator; repeated steals possible
*Steal accessories: Thief Cuffs increase steal success; Bandit Crest allows stealing rare items first; Gamble randomizes steal chance

Everlong v3.34

A new version of Everlong with several quality of life updates and bug fixes is now available for download.

The DynBattleChoices plugin crash has been eliminated. A huge thanks to AubreyTheBard for tracking down the cause and updating the plugin.

The main additions are a scan skill scroll (Libra) found in Eridwell's Refuge; a Bestiary that can be accessed from a bookshelf aboard the Inceptum ship in the top floor cabin, or the cockpit room of the Aetherius airship, revealing data for encountered enemies; and battle message pop-ups that telegraph certain enemy attacks, allowing players to anticipate and prepare.

Mini-game difficulty has also been adjusted to be easier.

This patch took far longer than expected for several reasons. The battle messages required significant, tedious work. Each monster and every battle it appears in had to be tailored individually. Only certain attacks are telegraphed to prevent message spam.

The scan skill and bestiary functionality was also difficult to implement and necessitated compromising planned features. Certain DynRPG functions are temperamental, such as text drawing. Most frustrating, attempting to query a monster's current attribute resistance during battle is totally unreliable. I achieved different results using test play, saved files, and fresh game starts. Therefore, enemy data displays only default database attribute resistance and does not reflect any changes caused by skills. Adjustments to enemy HP, AP, STR, DEF, MAG, SPD, item drops, EXP, and money are updated correctly. I squeezed as much data as possible into the display, which is rudimentary but functional.

Hopefully these quality of life updates will improve player experience, addressing concerns about frustrating surprise attacks and and allowing more strategic use of attribute and condition weaknesses since probing to discover these is no longer necessary.

Version 3.33 BETA

New patch, download here. This is a BETA patch. Players install at their own discretion, relying on the autosave feature to preserve progress.

I did some DynRPG programming and created a few plugins to correct some long standing issues and add a few new features. There's a new end battle summary that displays stats gained on level up, current base stats, and experience to next level. An overkill mechanic has been introduced that rewards extra experience, money, and increases item drop rate. The damage limit has been raised, allowing boss HP to display accurate remaining amounts. Item restore is no longer capped in battle. Skills that restore are no longer capped, but outside battle when used on the entire party the average is used in calculations. The Nightshade item has been replaced with the Elegy Bell, which can be used in any battle, not just against Plague.

A big thanks to Pepsi Otaku, Corti, and especially Aubrey the Bard for their help with DynRPG.

This is a beta patch since I only tested gameplay for less than an hour, though the plugins themselves were thoroughly tested.

I had big plans for plenty of other cool stuff I could do with DynRPG now that I understand the classes and game objects, but I don't see the reason to spend more time on this project or improving an obsolete engine.

Patch v3.31F

Here's a quick link to the new patch.

A few bug fixes, a batch of item adjustments particularly targeting Might and other automatic enchantments, some conveniences changes for players, but most significantly I rewrote the algorithm that tracks and restores hero statistics.

I implemented an entire new approach where heroes are reduced to their initial class, level, and stats. Then gained levels are restored, and bonuses from items and the Skull Knight are added on. This code should prevent errors causing unexplained and inconsistent stat changes seen in previous algorithms.

Previous version save files work, but slight variations will occur after the algorithm runs for the first time. I had to create new initial classes for each hero with the appropriate EXP and stat growth curves. Heroes previously used their own data until being reborn. Automatic number generation between the first and last level values will result in differences. Unfortunately, any saves with heroes possessing wildly inaccurate stats will not be fixed by applying the patch. The new algorithm will only see deviations from the base amounts as earned bonuses.

I tested the new code in relevant situations, but I'm never confident I avoided a mistake or didn't overlook a case until players run through the game without incident. I'd really like to update the full package download soon, but I want this change thoroughly tested first.

This patch includes several bug fixes, including the infamous "subscript out of range (-1)" airship bug. The old airship dock mechanic of simple contact with the location has been restored. It's easier to trigger, and the alternative code did not eliminate the bug. Instead I implemented a convoluted dummy placeholder event for the airship on the world map.

The technical information for those interested or attempting to eliminate this bug in their own rm2k3 projects: due to an (inconsistent) engine bug, the teleport and transport vehicle event commands set an invalid memory pointer (null address) for the target map id and coordinates variable(s). This ONLY occurs for the airship vehicle, and ONLY if the player and airship are on the same map before the airship is sent to a different map. The player does not have to be riding the airship at the time of teleport.

Also of note is a new mini-boss mechanic for a few monsters. These enemies will adjust more specifically to heroes in automatic balance mode. The statistic changes had to be made after the battle initializes since these are random encounters, necessitating a blackout animation to hide the number pop-ups that might confuse players.

If the bug reports continue to remain quiet in the immediate future, I'll update the full package download soon too.

Patch v3.31C

UPDATE: Patch version B may have broken the Skill Shard system for some players. The archive has been uploaded with a fix. Several other bugs were also eliminated. I'm tentatively declaring the skill swap error fixed as well, but more testing is required before I'm confident enough to update the full package.

The most significant change is the final tier of several healing skills now restore a percentage of max HP, bypassing the 9999 limit. Previously, it was difficult to heal heroes that were reborn multiple times and had high HP totals in the tens of thousands. Items and skills are capped at four digits, unlike damage which is currently capped at five digits. This is a limitation of the break damage limit hack that I've not seen addressed, nor anticipate ever will be.

The implementation of percentage based healing is not without restrictions. A temporary new condition, "Reprieve", is inflicted by the healing spell upon the target. Just prior to the next turn, HP is restored, then the condition abates before the following turn. There are some custom effects that don't count as turns, such as Parasite, which could damage or kill a hero before healing occurs.

The engine also prevents skills from both inflicting and removing conditions. Spells that previously cured negative conditions no longer do so on their final tier if they now inflict Reprieve. For example, Revitalize previously extinguished all conditions in addition to healing, but no longer does so. Chakra still removes Blind, Bleed, and Poison at lower tiers, but the strongest version sacrificed this effect for the additional healing. The rationale is that late in the game the player will likely use equipment to provide condition immunity, and would prefer the significant healing boost. This also makes Purify, Esuna, and condition removing items like Remedy and Panacea more relevant again.

The Overpower and Meltdown algorithms were adjusted to similarly account for high HP totals. Also worthy of note, new riddle statues were added to the first puzzle in the Black Dragon Trial to make it easier and more engaging than simple trial and error.
