Exceed the speed limit with my Macro Machine

Macro Machines is actually a little top down racing game in the style of Micro Machines (just as the name says) and this is a thing which I’ve never seen on RPG Maker 2k3 before. Technically it’s very impressive, especially because the race car isn't an actor at all, but a picture, which can be driven over the race track. The advanced technical event work the developer did causes the game to have a very smooth handling and it basically feels like a real, small Gameboy-like racing game rather than a game designed with an engine made to produce role-playing games. No wonder, as the developer is well known for making obviously impossible game mechanics with just an RPG Maker.

The steering is very simple: you just need to hold down the enter-key to slowly accelerate your car. To reduce speed, the key just has to be released and the car automatically slows down. That alone is quite difficult to do with RPG Maker 2k3. In addition, the steering is not limited to only four directions, but even more (which is as well not provided by standard mechanics of the engine). This is pretty challenging so far because it makes it hard to avoid rocks and other obstacles at full speed. The player needs to rely on proper navigation.

Quite impressive: When you hit a wall (or any other obstacle), you’ll be bounced back like a boomerang. That's fine, as there is no option to drive backwards.

At the moment, the game consists of only two race tracks packed into a time-trial mode, which is quite entertaining for a short time. Your best lap time, as well as your total best time in both racetracks will be saved so you can play a bit with the goal of topping your own personal high score again and again. And… yeah, that’s basically all we got here.

Actually, I didn’t want to write a review on a tech demo, but I like this small piece personally. However, this game is already a couple of years old and I still hope that it will eventually be developed into a full version at some day. I rate this one with 2,5 stars, because it has a lot of potential to build upon. I’m still hoping that the development of the game will continue somehow, because the game would be even better if such things as opponents and items were included.
