To celebrate Chronicles of Tsufanubra receiving the title of this month's Featured Game, as well as only being a few downloads shy of 1000, I welcome you all to ask us anything you have in mind in regards to the game or its development. Cut content? Unused or scrapped ideas? Etc. Ask anything you want and I'll give a truthful answer, because at this point I don't think there's any real need to hide anything about the story or whatever.

So yeah, if there's anything at all you want to know about the history of this game and its development of what could have been and the ideas that had to be tossed, ask away!

what is a Tsufanubra?
That's a GREAT question!

A Tsufanubra is a... well, you see...
If you ever tried to eat a tomato after brushing your teeth...
Hmmm...

You know, I actually made an attempt to google the word, but sadly I never received the strangely entertaining and humorous definition or description that I wanted. Oh well! Guess I can't fall back on that.

If I remember correctly, it's a name I created for some alien/virtual reality world for a story that never really saw the light of day many years ago. I think this was back in 2009? Or probably even before that. I wanted something that sounded alien and magical at the same time, so I kinda crammed some noises and sounds together which resulted in "Tsufanubra."

Dang it, Trihan, you can't just burst in here and throw around my Super Secrets like they're regular secrets! If everyone starts to do that, my names won't be so... uh... "unique" anymore!

Also, good catch, Corf. Somehow I... didn't see that?
I thought Corf was asking A/S/L?

WHAT COLOR IS YOUR BATHROOM WALLS?
THEY'RE... blue, I think? Someone's in there now, so I can't double-check!

As for actually giving out little bits of information on ideas that I'd scrapped: Lifa, the party's Black Mage and princess of Yurudos, was originally intended (by me, before Desertopa joined the team) to die and replaced with Vladimir.

The Black Mistress of Ziazu was supposed to be Yoor's mother, but this was before a lot of the game's backstory and history of the kjrn was fleshed out. We also though this would be a little too much and would add far more drama than the game needed (and it's already chok-full!)

Vladimir was supposed to make an appearance in the final dungeon as the game's penultimate boss battle. This idea was scrapped, and he was moved to being the final foe the party would face within Diaboros.

Also, before opting to make this a very story and dialogue-heavy game, I'd originally intended to basically do a graphical overhaul of the original Dragon Fantasy and leave the story just as bare-bones.

I'll keep spitting them out if there's any interest! So be sure to let me know =B

Hurray for Desertopa's wise intervention >:(

This needs a real postmortem.
I would like to revisit a topic from the main page.

Diaboros again: Defeating the western warp and southern warp guardians spawns a treasure chest respectively, but I couldn't find a new treasure chest for defeating the eastern warp guardian (in case there's supposed to be one). Maybe these two treasure chests should have been there from the start. At least then I wouldn't have questioned my sanity.

I added in random surprises/treats like this in various areas of the game. This was simply to spice up each player's experience and an attempt to see if anyone would actually notice these minor changes =B

Do you remember all the other "surprises" and where you implemented them? I'm a sucker for secrets in JRPGs, but I'm pretty sure I've missed all of the "surprises" (except for the aforementioned one in Diaboros) in Chronicles of Tsufanubra.
Hmmm... I'm not sure if I can remember ALL of them, but what I was mainly referencing when I said that was that I wanted to add in a lot of small details that'd make every player's experience slightly different. For example, a lot of enemy's have rare and one-of-a-kind equipment drops that some people may never see, while other might end up with 8 of said item in their inventory! But something more along the lines of what you are referring to would be the "Fairy Scythe" in the Arvandi Woods, which a decent amount of people seemed to miss because I threw them off with a decoy chest with a teleportation event in front of it =P

Some other ideas I had that were scrapped somewhere along the way were:

-Veryl would have a group of characters accompanying him around that'd act as HIS "party members." They'd be Vladimir, Giruvega, and Baolovar.

-I was also thinking on allowing the player to control Veryl and his group at certain points in the story, similarly to how Fou Lu and Ryu's group were switched around in Breath of Fire 4.

-The confrontation with Giruvega atop Mountain Tower was going to be completely different. Far before working with Desertopa, I originally intended the prince to transform into a monster/some kind of creature so that the fight would be more similar to the original (in Dragon Fantasy). Vladimir was going to have planted an experimental creature within Giruvega that would've been birthed just in time to fight the party.

-For a SUPER SECRET, and something that I'd have no reason to bring up within the actual game, is that I've always seen Celes as having an interest in women. Even though some people thought there was some semblance of a romantic spark between our heroine and Yoor, it sadly wasn't there. Or maybe if there was, perhaps now I should feel a little bad for Yoor? =P

For what it's worth, while a lot of players clearly see romantic tension between Celes and Yoor, while I was writing the dialogue I was always working from the perspective that while Lifa and Sando are romantically attracted (or at the very least simply attracted) to each other, Celes and Yoor's relationship is entirely platonic. But they have a lot in common, and Celes respects Yoor a lot as someone who's invested so much of his life into altruistic causes. And Yoor has a lot of personal investment in Celes since he sees her as someone whose role is to fix up the world, but it's not a romantic attachment.

Also, while the character art might not convey this, I always assumed Yoor was considerably older than Celes. Although I changed the dialogue from the original version where she explicitly states that she's twenty years old near the beginning of the game, as far as I was concerned that never stopped being her official age. On the other hand, I figured Yoor was older than that by the time he first became a qualified healer, and I'd peg his age during the game as somewhere from his mid to late thirties. Celes might be off the lower end of his strike range.
Thanks. Knowing these (fun) facts always sweetens the gaming experience in retrospect even more.

Suspecting that clearing the dungeon nullifies the teleportation events and thus denies access to the higher parts, I roamed the Arvandi Woods for hours so that I didn't miss anything.

I can't remember any rare drops from enemies, except that "axeman" that drops the Shannax Axe (which - to the best of my recollection - can only be bought later and, being worth 5.500, was my main source of income). It may come as a surprise, but I used this axe with Celes and Sando until the final dungeon. Despite its low hit rate, it still seemed to get things done faster because of its high critical rate.

Concerning Celes and Yoor, my impression/imagination was that Yoor held himself back, because he knew they couldn't enjoy a happy ending together either way. Then again, I refuse to believe that there can be platonic relationships between men and women in JRPGs. I mean: That doesn't even work in reality. :D

I never thought Sando and Lifa were romantically entangled; they always seemed more like brother and sister.
Actually, my preference as a writer tends towards distinctly non-subtle romance, but Ephiam's vision was to keep the signs of their feelings to hints.

Here's another tidbit. When Lifa says in the scene with Baolovar in Old Yurudos that "we've learned a thing or two here anyway," rather than the revelations about Veryl, she's mainly thinking of the discovery that Sando will prioritize her safety over getting an edge on Veryl.

Also, for another note on something that readers would be even less likely to infer from the dialogue. When Lifa says in the Arvandi Woods that the throne "isn't worth having..." that wasn't the complete thought there which she trailed off at. What she was thinking, as I wrote it, was "It's not worth having your family die for." This is an allusion to her rarely mentioned older brother who died before the start of the story, leaving her next in line for the throne. So she's thinking about the contrast between Giruvega, who cursed his brother in order to get at the throne, whereas she loved her brother and as far as she's concerned becoming first in line to the throne has only made her life worse.

Of course, this is completely opaque from the dialogue I wrote, but I like to leave some stuff behind the scenes where it influences the characters' feelings and actions even if the player doesn't know about it.
I always envisioned Sando and Lifa having the type of relationship wherein they were so comfortable around each other and just... clicked so the point that they seemed like incredibly close friends. More often than not, when two characters are in love, their interest in each other is beaten over your head. I wanted something different. Something more... nuanced. They express their interest in an atypical manner and aren't all over each other or super love-dovey. I've felt like I've clicked with people on this level before, albeit briefly, and aimed to express the Princess and her guard's interest in a similar light.

Also, Euphoniac, similar "rare" items include the strongest (in terms of pure ATK) sword in the game, the Elite Longsword, dropped by the monster Evan's Elite; the Three King's Lexicon by Veryl's Chosen; the Witch Queen Ring by Faulmah's Favorite, etc. all within the final dungeon. I've never had the Shannax Axe drop, myself, but if you got more than one you'd have to be incredibly lucky, because the drop rate's only 8%.
Hello. Thank you for this great game!

May I know the original titles of all the songs/music that you used in this game? I could only recognize just a few of them like the ones from Valkyrie Profile ps 1. I'd love to hear the original soundtracks too.

Thank you
Uh, oh... well now that's a request. I think finding all of their original titles would take just a little bit of time, but I can list the games I took the music from! ... Or at least 95% of them, anyway.

Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Live a Live
Sword of Mana
Golden Sun
Valkyrie Profile
Terranigma
Seiken Densetsu 3
Rudra no Hihou/Treasure of the Rudras
Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song
Breath of Fire 1 and 2
Megaman Zero 3 and 4
Chrono Cross
Etrian Odyssey 5

And that should be about it. If there's any specific song you really want to know the name or origin of, you can point it out and I'll do my best to find the answer!
