Music: How much is too much?

So for the past year or so, I've been trying to fight with my own music files as to decide whether I need to cut it down some or leave it as it is, or just make a Vanilla/Extended music pack (vanilla being music cut out and smaller, while extended being it has the extra songs and plays them as it normally does).

Here's the issue: My game without the music is around 40 MB. WITH the music, it runs about 1 GB. Yes, there's THAT much music in the game (273 music files in total). I WOULD like to cut down on how much music is used...however, I feel by cutting out some of the music, it would hurt the areas where the music would work the best to get the feel for that particular scenario/dungeon/fight, if you know what I mean? For instance, I DO have a generic boss theme, but in some fights it just....wouldn't feel right if it was used there. For instance, in a boss fight with a boss that's meant to feel a bit more...melancholic or sad...the default generic boss fight wouldn't fit that at all. Granted, I DO plan on leaving some special boss themes for those particular bosses, but for the most part...well, I hope you all understand what I'm getting at? I'm not very good at this whole explaining business. ^^;;

Most of the music tends to focus on bosses and dungeons (each playable character has their own battle theme for when they're the leader of the party as well, and I don't intend on removing that from them). The bosses I can more than likely chop out music from, but...dungeons is where I think it'd really hurt. I don't know...I need more input on this before I do anything else. Just, a 1 GB download for a RPG Maker game does seem a bit much. >_<;;

I noticed while extracting the music files that a few of them have Japanese characters in their filenames.
Maybe for you this isn't true, but for me RPG Maker doesn't recognize or play files that have Japanese characters in their filenames--if I load such a game into RPG Maker 2003, then try to select a file with Japanese characters for an event, RPG Maker 2003 shows the Japanese characters as gibberish.
Even though Win7 displays the characters correctly, RPG Maker 2003 does not.

To ensure that everyone can hear the music while playing, you'll need to rename those mp3s. You can use RMTool to identify which maps/events correspond to those mp3s, because after renaming them you'll have to fix those maps/events so they'll play the renamed mp3s.
Wait what?? That's...odd. They played fine for me. o_O

I see one filename that has Japanese characters in it (being Phantasia of Fantasy). I do not recall if any of the older packs actually had Japanese characters in them because I changed filenames later. I remember that being an issue at one point (yet Phantasia of Fantasy plays fine on my end. Maybe because my computer Local settings is set to Japanese, which is how it displays all of the Japanese stuff fine for me? Hmm...).

IMHO, a 1GB download seems a bit excessive, especially is 96% of it is music. Aren't there ways to reduce the size of the files, either by reducing the bit-rate or using different types encoding without sacrificing too much quality? Reducing the number of songs seems the simpler approach, although I suspect you'll have to make some tough choices. If it helps, for me, generally speaking, seeing any game download over 200 MB makes me think twice about downloading it. Hope that helps!
There's ways to do it, but I'm not that well-versed in them (nor do I have the time. Plus my hearing's terrible anyways and I wouldn't be able to tell any difference in quality. ^^; ). But yeah, that's the hard part is cutting out songs. I'm ONLY cutting songs out for the vanilla pack though (which is going to be the default music pack for the game). Any extra songs NOT in the vanilla pack will be in the Expanded pack, and will be optional if the player so desires to get it. There is an option at the start of the game and by save points in-game that allow you to switch between music types so there's that...

I...just don't know what to cut out for the vanilla pack is all. 273 files is a lot to go through. @_@;
i think the problem is that your game is too big. any kind of reductions in a game that large are going to be a pain but you just have to either suck it up, or face the fact that some people will not download your game because it's too large. hell, i probably wouldn't play your game knowing how long it is. it will seem endless. it would probably be better served as a series, like the .hack games.

to answer your question, 1 gb of music is too much. 500mb+ is probably too much.

if you can't make decisions on how to limit your music usage, then you might want to reconsider how you are making those decisions on the first place. you don't need a unique song for every area. find some kind basic themes that repeat themselves. shorten songs to a single play-through and loop them. reduce the quality. if you don't want to, or can't, do these things then there is no fix to this problem.

while your at it, reconsider every other decision related to game making. more is not always better. a game doesn't get proportionally better as you add systems and features.

forgive my bluntness, i've been drinking
I...honestly don't think the game is too big per say. It only runs 10-20 hours as it is, and is only 50%, so when all is said and done, should be about 40-50 hours as I planned for it to be, which is about normal for a RPG from what I know.

But yeah, I know I can't please everyone, and I'm not honestly trying to do so, but downsizing the amount of music is something that should be done (and again, I have it set so that those that want all of the songs can have it in the Extended version).

I already know that, and I'm pretty much done adding anything new for the time being (there's still 1 or 2 things that I'd like to implement, but not right now). What I wanted to do in those 2 months of working on the characters is already accomplished so...shouldn't HAVE to do anything else for them. ^^;
After downloading & adding to the Music folder the mp3s in the following packs:
Beta5+ Music
Expansion Music
Updated Music (for Update Patch 1.100)
Vanilla Music

RMTool lists these as missing:

Music file "Faith is for the Transient People (Sound Sepher)"
Music file "Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion (Orchestral)"
Music file "Strawberry Crisis!! <gibberish>"
Music file "Dark Side of Fate (dBu)"
Music file "Native Faith (dBu)"
Music file "Septette for the Dead Princess (UI-70)"
Music file "Selection (mochiton)"
Music file "Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke (dBu)"
Music file "Necro-Fantasy (Neutral)"
Music file "Touhou Gensoumaroku <gibberish> Devil of Decline - Boss 4 - OUT"
Music file "Legendary Illusion ~ Infinite Being (Gensoumaroku)"
Music file "The Hall of Dreams' Great Mausoleum (Armageddon Records)"
Music file "<gibberish> Phantasia of Fantasy (Rin Satsuki's Theme #2)"
Music file "Touhou Pocket Wars 2nd Ibaraki Kasen 's Theme"
Music file "Legend of the Great Gods (dBu)"
Music file "Old Yuanxian (dBu)"
Music file "The Doll Maker of Bucuresti (FMWS)"

*****************************************************************************

However 2 of them are not missing, they just aren't being recognized because of their Japanese characters:

Strawberry Crisis!! (マドレーヌ).mp3
Touhou Gensoumaroku 東方 東方幻想魔録 Devil of Decline - Boss 4 - OUT.mp3

The 3rd one that you mentioned, 花鳥風月は彷徨い歩く~Phantasia of Fantasy (Rin Satsuki's Theme #2).mp3 is missing, but I found it in an older version of Touhou Fantasy, the Beta 4 version which I still had.

*****************************************************************************

These 3 mp3s with the Japanese characters are used on the following maps and events (according to RMTool)

Strawberry Crisis!! (マドレーヌ).mp3 used in 3 places:
Common Event Database: Entry 1410
Event: Beta5 Music Room at (10,20) page 1
Event: Party Switch Area at (28,13) page 2

Touhou Gensoumaroku 東方 東方幻想魔録 Devil of Decline - Boss 4 - OUT.mp3 used in 3 places:
Event: Beta4 Music Room at (4,16) page 1
Event: Insect Forest 10 at (9,1) page 1
Event: Insect Forest 10 at (9,1) page 1
(This means it was used twice during the same page of the same event on the same map)

花鳥風月は彷徨い歩く~Phantasia of Fantasy (Rin Satsuki's Theme #2).mp3 used in 1 place:
Event: Beta8 Music Room at (2,12) page 1

So, if you rename these 3, you'll have to edit those events and database entries to find & play the renamed mp3s.

*****************************************************************************

Looking through the the list of missing mp3s, it seems that some of them are included but with changed names:

For example:
Faith is for the Transient People (Sound Sepher).mp3 == Faith is for the Transient People (Jun. A).mp3

But you can't just rename this mp3 because both names are used in-game:

Of course, you can just copy the mp3, then rename one so you'll have two mp3s with
different names, but since they both have the same song, that's just wasting space and making the game even larger then it needs to be.

There's a few others like this, here's the rest:

Missing Mp3 ==
Included Duplicate with Different Name

Dark Side of Fate (dBu).mp3 ==
Dark Side of Fate.mp3

Faith is for the Transient People (Sound Sepher).mp3 ==
Faith is for the Transient People (Jun. A)

Native Faith (dBu).mp3 ==
Native Faith.mp3

Septette for the Dead Princess (UI-70).mp3 ==
Septette for a Dead Princess 2.mp3

*****************************************************************************

These 2 mp3s can just be renamed as only the correct name is used in the game

Correct Name ==
Incorrect Name

Legend of the Great Gods (dBu).mp3 ==
08- 大神大神話伝.mp3

Old Yuanxian (dBu).mp3 ==
07- 古き妖仙 ~ Master and Servant.mp3

*****************************************************************************

Which means these are the ones that actually are missing, though they may have been included with older versions of Touhou Fantasy:

Legendary Illusion ~ Infinite Being (Gensoumaroku).mp3
Necro-Fantasy (Neutral).mp3
Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke (dBu).mp3
Selection (mochiton).mp3
Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion (Orchestral).mp3
The Doll Maker of Bucuresti (FMWS).mp3
The Hall of Dreams' Great Mausoleum (Armageddon Records).mp3
Touhou Pocket Wars 2nd Ibaraki Kasen 's Theme.mp3
花鳥風月は彷徨い歩く~Phantasia of Fantasy (Rin Satsuki's Theme #2).mp3

If you need RMTool, I have the latest version stored in my RMN locker:
http://rpgmaker.net/users/SegNin/locker/RMTool_Pack.zip

If you decide to use RMTool, don't use the Purge function. It's supposed to delete all the unused files, but RMTool is somewhat buggy, so it'll probably delete a few files that are needed.

Btw, after adding all the mp3s (including the missing ones I found either in my old Beta4 copy or on YouTube) my copy of the game comes to 1.4 GB rared.
And I even removed the thumbs.db and RTP files (since I already have the RTP) to shrink it down a bit.
Oh god my head. So much stuff going on there that....my head. @_@;;

Yeah, I did rename some files (they're in the "Updated Music (for Update Patch 1.100)" pack). Though I guess I did forget to change some some places?? Oi...music is such a pain right now lol. x_x;

EDIT - Wait, what??? Looking at the very first one (Faith is for the Transient People), it says it doesn't exist, but...it's there in the common event? Unless you mean in the file pack??)

EDIT #2 - Umm....I am confused as to what's going on with Faith now, from those last 2 screenshots. What is going on here!? @_@;
Ok, so after using the tool (thanks for that SegNim!), I fixed all of the errors (a lot of it was pointing to unused maps). So that's taken care of, and also renamed a couple of those files (Phantasia of Fantasy and Strawberry Crisis!, as the other 2 were already renamed long ago). I'll have to reupload those again later...

The others are probably there in the older packs (that are no longer there), but I'll need to reupload these packs anyways so...^^;

Right now, the game as it should be is 1.26 GB. A bit bigger than I thought it was...by .26 GB. But well, need help with still cutting it down I suppose. What works for which segments of the games is what's the hard part.

The option to have two different versions kind of makes sense. Good luck with it!
Aye, that way I don't have to chop EVERYTHING out and water the game down so much, but people who don't want a 1 GB game can still enjoy it with the bare minimal stuff. It's just a matter of figuring out WHAT to do! @_@;

EDIT #2 - Umm....I am confused as to what's going on with Faith now, from those last 2 screenshots. What is going on here!? @_@;

I should have made this more clear, sorry about that.
You might have already figured this out, but if not...

The first screenshot shows the events that need Faith is for the Transient People (Jun. A).mp3

The second screenshot shows the events for Faith is for the Transient People (Sound Sepher).mp3

Thing is, both mp3s are for the SAME song

I determined this by searching for it, and finding it on YouTube, where in the description for the video it says:

Album: Youyou Kengeki Musou Original Sound Tracks
Arrangement: Jun.A
Circle: Sound Sepher

I also listened to both the YouTube video and the mp3 to confirm that the video was the same song as the mp3.

CONCLUSION: The events that need either Faith is for the Transient People (Jun. A).mp3 or Faith is for the Transient People (Sound Sepher).mp3 are playing the SAME SONG.
Aye, I already fixed everything. I for some reason decided to rename songs from one to the other and I honestly don't know why. I should've left the filenames alone but I didn't like how they were...^^;;;
That's sounds terrible, tbh. Hearing that the size is just coming from a bunch of Touhou arrangements makes it even worse.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

So wait. I just realized something. You have 15 hours of gameplay, but more than 15 hours of music? Listening to your soundtrack takes longer than playing your game?

I don't even know how you did that. That's impressively absurd.
Now that is an interesting observation.
I'm starting to think that the game ISN'T 10-20 hours, if it's taken me just 3 hours to almost be done with the beta1 segment, so I might be wrong on that front. Still...I do need to cut down the music, either which way. I just need to think of one theme for each area, which is still regardless going to be hard (but I may have one theme for each cave area now!). Of course, this also means to keep the Vanilla/Extended option, I'm going to make each opening area play the song via events when entering the area, and each area for that area to be set to "Event Music" or something like that. @_@;
