Discuss Exile's Journey over on Discord!

Exile’s Journey is a dark fantasy RPG. The story centers around a former knight named Kniryk and his quest to stop a demon invasion that is occurring throughout the Kingdom of Nysoroth, where most of the game takes place.

The game focuses on the internal struggles of the main characters in addition to the aforementioned invasion and its impact on the Kingdom.

The main character of the game is Kniryk. An exile by choice, he's now presumed dead in Landoria, his homeland. He's a righteous man, always acting with a sense of honor. However, he is often torn when justice and law conflict. He wears the red cape of the Knights of Landoria as a testament to what they originally stood for before their corruption. He's joined in his quest by others who also question their purpose in the world.

This game is a love letter to RPG Maker and role-playing games as a whole. With Exile's Journey, I strived to make a game that feels wholly consistent and maintains a professional feel. I've been using RPG Maker since 2003.

Highly engrossing storyline - You'll be hooked playing as these characters, learning about their diverse backgrounds, and watching as they develop and solve their own personal conflicts.

Open ended gameplay - After an introductory section, you're allowed to complete the game's dungeons in any order you want!

Numerous side quests - These side quests are optional, but without them you won't receive the game's best armor and equipment, or the game's only method of air travel! These side quests feature story lines of their own and offer a break from the game's main story.

15+ hours of gameplay - This game will be much longer and more epic than your average RPG Maker game!

Extremely detailed world - This game takes doesn't allow you to travel the whole world, only the large and extremely detailed Kingdom of Nysoroth. After playing and learning of the country's cultures and history you'll feel like a true Nysorothian!

Original music - Many of this music are original tracks, many of them composed by myself for the game!

Custom sound effects - I created many of the game's sound effects, including the menu sound effects, on a Korg Wavestation synthesizer!

Weapon upgrade system - Some weapons will almost never become obsolete thanks to this!

No random encounters - see enemies on the map before engaging them!

Treasure tracking - The game keeps track of all the treasure you've found in the main dungeons! Find all treasure chests to obtain a special reward!

The 2020 Misao winners have been announced! Exile's Journey wins two!

I'm sure many of you are well aware already, but for those who aren't, I'd like to announce with great pride that Exile's Journey has won two Misaos:

Not Dead Yet Award (Given to the best old game that was finally finished this year)
and
"Everlasting Journey" Award (The game that has the most content to offer)

My game also secured many other nominations. I've been following the Misaos for a long time, and from a young age. I first became aware of these annual awards after the 2005 winners were announced, when games like The Way, Laxius Power 3, and Pokemon: The Evil Inside featured prominently. As such, it's an honor for me to finally have a game of my own nominated and awarded various Misaos.

I recommend that everyone take a look at the link below. There were so many great contenders this year. All of the games featured below, winners or not, definitely deserve a play.

https://rpgmaker.net/misaos/2020/

Thank you to everyone for your continued support. It means a lot to me. I've been a bit quiet recently, but I am still working on my newest game, Memories From a Dream. Please subscribe if you haven't!

Well... I am here a little late.
But I am stuck in a "gamebreaking bug"

I'm in the final part when you have to kill 5 demonic knights. Well, there is a section when you find two of them.. but if i take a step towards, the game freezes, as simple as that. To be clear: everything moves except the PG and the demonic knights. So... it's gamebreaking.

Hope someone will read this one day... i'd really like to complete the game!!! I am so neeeeear! (And over powered... LV 50+)

Hey Superes. This should fix it.

Download this file:

https://rpgmaker.net/users/dethmetal/locker/Map0377.lmu

And place it in the game's directory, overwriting the file that is already present. Then the bug should hopefully no longer occur.

I always stop coming here then not remembering why I stop. then I come back to here realize oh yeah game maker here are trash and they don't know what they are doing

You shouldn't have come here at all if you're going to lash out with a baby's temper tantrum. Last I checked you need to be above the age of 13 to post, this isn't a babysitting service.
I always stop coming here then not remembering why I stop. then I come back to here realize oh yeah game maker here are trash and they don't know what they are doing I been five fucking hour I defeated the first hell gate and I went to another one where the fairy and the dog are only no be able to defeat the boss and maybe I was just to weak so decided to go to another hell gate buy the boat that I came with is gone I can't even return to the village to buy more supply not that will actually help me. So the only thing I can to is start over and iam not doing that and also you say there is a weapon upgrade system yeah I don't believe you five and I couldn't figure out to do it. You need to update this trash of a game and have a upgrade system and you need to fix you need to fix the disappearing boat this is the only game where I had walkthrough and it didn't help

I just remembered : We never did learn what happened to the first Holy Sword that got stolen. And because the Dark Knights never made a reappearance until the 11th hour, I was fully expecting them to be a different faction. Perhaps Prince Bryce had his own ambitions in mind >=) No dice.

Originally, it was going to be revealed the Zibinx turned the Holy Sword into a sword of darkness, but I kind of just... forgot to include this plot point, heh. After the game released, I realized how cool and epic it would have been if I revealed that Antonin, Kniryk's father, inherited the old Holy Sword (now a Dark Sword). Then, if you choose Kniryk to fight Antonin, it would not only be father vs. son but holy vs dark sword. Ah well, if I ever release a "definitive edition" or something like that, I will be sure to make this happen.

This is so good, I'm just starting my act 3 and I wonder if the "map of the world" is accessible or playable that would a 100+ hrs gameplay.

Thanks! The map of the world is just there to help the player imagine where some of the other mentioned countries are in relation to Nysoroth. Unfortunately, the whole world is not playable in this game, but I plan to set every game in a new country. So, the game will probably not take you over 100 hours to beat. However, to my surprise, I have seen many save files that are over 50 hours!

Oh, I did have problems with money scarcity xD 90% of it was me wondering if a Crafting system was down the road, so I hoarded anything that seemed even remotely rare, like when I got a mammoth tusk from the balloon girl.

Spoiler Talk
Ah, I see what you were trying to achieve with Kniryk now. You're right, it didn't convey well x)
If I could offer some belated and now-futile writing advice, I would've integrated his old Act I talk of honor and justice into his final reasoning, perhaps citing that while the King may want Zibinx captured, he feels Adaem deserves a more personally delivered revenge. In his mind, this is proper Justice. Frame it in such a way that while he's still a knight, he's fine-tuned himself a personal moral code and isn't just a confused Lawful Neutral footsoldier for the regime anymore.
You did mention "DGAF Kniryk", which I think would be a weak conclusion. That's Jespias when you first meet him, and he develops beyond that.

As I was typing something out regarding the Kniryk/Leyna ending, I realized I'm just a sucker for love interest subplots, so I'll spare you my HISHE fanboy musings x)

Thank you very much for your comments. It means a lot to me that you think balanced the gameplay well. This is something I worked extremely hard on - especially for the first 2/3 of the game. In Act II, where you're free to complete a number of main dungeons and side dungeons in any order, it was especially difficult, but I played the game probably hundreds of times over the course of its development which led to lot of fine-tuning. I played the game repeatedly, doing things in every possible order.

You know, I often hear that I made things too expensive and money too scarce, so you're a rare example of someone who actually found things to be cheap. My goal was to make money scarce enough that the player is constantly forced to make choices about how to spend their money wisely and what is most important for their most imminent challenges.

In regard to your other comments, I pretty much agree with you overall.

Arawn not having dialogue was, as you mentioned, to make him seem ominous and scary and to imply that he feels so far above your party that he doesn't even feel that it's worth speaking. In addition, there's also the fact that he's not supposed to actually be an important character in the story. He's essenntially just a plot device. Perhaps that was a mistake on my part, but I didn't want him to take away from the themes of purpose and drive.

I did intend for Kniryk's character arc to conclude in the ending. I acknowledge that I didn't portray it well. The idea is that, by disobeying the king's orders and killing Zibinx, Kniryk is finally "free" in that he no longer strictly conforms to the law and is now willing to make his own decisions and act according to what he believes is just. As a Knight of Landoria, he did exactly as he was told, but now he is willing to make his own decisions. At this point, his development is supposed to be Lost Kniryk -> DGAF Kniryk. And perhaps he will develop further in later games...

I also wanted to subvert the trope of "main character marries love interest he met on the quest and they live happily ever after". I always thought that these kind of relationships would probably end badly since the characters never got to know each other in a domestic setting. As Leyna realizes that she may not like this guy as much within the confines of day-to-day life, seeds of doubt are planted in her mind. I pretty much left it hanging here. This choice, on my part, was probably a bad one in terms of satisfying my audience, because it seems that most people did not like this at all. However, I never wanted to make it seem like they hate each other, only that they may have problems in the future that they need to overcome.

It's funny - I originally planned for the ending to be even more brief. The original idea for the end of the game was for it to end abruptly after Kniryk kills Zibinx. However, this wasn't as cool as it seemed in my head, and I realized I needed to add more. I definitely agree that I didn't add enough, but I honestly found writing an ending to be extremely difficult. Plus, I wanted to leave things somewhat vague so that I have things to expand upon in the sequels, and leave the player wanting more, I suppose. Hopefully, I do a better job at writing an ending for my next games!

The scene with Morgana is there to set-up future sequels. It wasn't there in the beta, and a few testers noted that it felt strange not to have her in the ending at all.

Again, I'm really glad you enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to taking everything I learned from Exile's Journey to make my future games even better.
I just finished this game. It was a real work of art. The mapping in particular is just exquisite. */me does the chef kissing fingers thing*

The gameplay balancing is damn near perfect too. Early dungeons litter heal/save spots all over the place so you don't feel constrained, but the later ones thin them out for more challenge. Not that it's THAT much more difficult, since on-map full-party heal items are sold in every Item Shop, and are dirt cheap. But I'm a stingy bastard with my items, so yeah. Even with over 20 of them in the last dungeon, I'm farting around with MP Drain spells.

Onto more spoilerific thoughts...
Adaem's death was heartbreaking ;_; He was both a good dude and a core member of my party (Slow is broken).

The Oreth/Dargor/Myrna vs Annwyvn folks is a dick move. Apart from giving Oreth a short go to see if he could replace Jespias, I didn't train either of them. Thank goodness I had a bunch of Phantom Philters. 3 vs 6 was nuts, and their healer made it worse.

Arawn not having dialogue was both ominous and an anticlimactic letdown. His not saying anything and there being more after the battle had me wondering what the next twist would be, when in fact there is none. He's toast, and all that's left is a whimpering Zibinx.

The ending sucked >xD After a journey that long, I expected something substantial. It's also no fun that Kniryk didn't conclude a character arc when you had a golden opportunity to wrap it up neatly. He ended the game as he began, a mopey ex-knight with nothing to live for, when his last talk with Leyna on the balcony would've been the perfect chance to reconcile him having a newfound path after Zibinx/Arawn (ie. be with her, and now a ruler).

I didn't get the purpose of the last bit with Morgana in the cave with Perth. Maybe I'm not supposed to until Memories from a Dream...?

Ok i thought this may be because i have an old OS, Windows XP, and the game can't work with it, but other games here with RM2K3 are working nicely. What i hear is the rain fall at the beginning, and all the sounds, like chests opening or the healing thing, shouts and swords clash, but not the menu sound effects, and sadly no music, even on the title screen..

I remember having the same issue. Every time I ran Windows Media Player, it set one of the sound control sliders to 0, causing music in RM2k and RM2k3 do be silent. So, go to sound settings, and set the slider back to normal.

So once the game becomes non-linear and you're told to go to one of the 3 points in any order, I go to the closest one and first fight out on the world map, I get demolished. So you can't just "go in any order" Was a good game till that point, just getting deleted now.

There are plenty of side quests to get exp, gold and new equipment. Some sharks wrecked my party every time I got close to the island they protected. I did some side quests, bought better equipment and then eat shark sushi !

So at the first sign of challenge you drop out? It's unfortunate that so many people are getting so used to easy games.

My sentiments exactly. That was a bitch thing to say.
Shame on you, guy. Give your balls a tug.

I wish the accounts of certain n00bs would get deleted instead. Two weeks here and nothing but shit-posts.

Hello, i just wanted to know if there's something to do to get the music work, i'm french maybe my rtp doesn't work the same way as your's, and your music seem's to be amazing, so i would like to ear it, tell me if you see anything i can do, thanks...
Do you hear any sound at all when you play the game? For example, do you hear the menu sound effects?

I had to run this game in windows 8 compatibility mode to get this to do anything other than just a black screen with music playing when I booted the game, just a heads up for anyone else.

Strange, I had no problems then with Windows 10.
The only advice I can give you is installing the correct RTP for this game's engine.
