Outside of the battler graphics, this looks oddly normal for a combat screen. Though, I dunno, maybe there are gameplay mechanics that I can't see that make this more interesting? Maybe having a "mundane" combat system is supposed to throw people off? What other crazy theories can I come up with?
Now that I think on it, maybe causing people to come up with crazy theories about how this would actually work is the point of this screen?

the combat system is in actuality very mundane; the only thing extraordinary about it is the diction which is phenomenal and a few unique items which unfortunately weren't very well balanced

I disagree. The chakra point summons are a highly inventive change from the usual party system and force inventive techniques from the player. I've never played a game like it, and yeah its turned based but it's far more radically different than the hundreds of final fantasy clones that primarily compose RPG Maker games.

being able to summon mans is not exactly revolutionary, especially when those mans cost firaga, wateraga, poison, and heal by any other name
You could also compare Chess and Monopoly on the basis that they both have instruction manuals, use dice and work on a game board.

I've never played Chess with dice... it does sounds fun though.
