Uchioniko review...not much to say

I must say that for this game, I had a bit of fun at least. And really, at least this time I tried reviewing a game with GAMEPLAY. The most important part of a game! But, ah well, let's get on with this.

So let's start with the...

  • Story

Yes, the story. Not much really. Let's just go through a summary, and then score it. Not much really.

You start the game with two magic users, who are named Michi and Jun, both female. They begin talking to one another, knowing that there are alot less goons then before...which I wish I knew, I want to see what was before. Really, do not tell someone that there is something more than what they see, if you have not even put it in the game yet. Anyway, as the text ends, with just a few words more being spoke, the adventure finally begins. Now, there was a lot of baddies in that little area, and yet I was touched by none of them, not even when not using the run key built into the engine. So, I do not know if they are actual enemies or not. Well, when you get all the way through, you go through a door and find another magic user, accept apparently this one is an evil spirit, because I believe when Michi goes in the room, she calls the thing a foul spirit. A fight breaks loose, and the people that you are playing lose because they were outclassed. Speaking of class, the next scene. The two girls start speaking of something else that could save the world or something like that, and then, you appear at a classroom.

Here, your teacher is doing role call, and tells everyone that there is a new student, which, not needing to be said in-game, you are the new student. Momotami Ruri, and almost like everyone else *looks at Michi and Jun*, she has an anime name. Japanese, I will just say. I am guessing the song in the background as soon as she appears is her theme, but god damn it's happy! Then, after the cutscene, the music is back to normal. Really, not too bad, but the theme of the school, quite boring. Let's not talk too much about that right now, because really, you hear that it's time to leave class and now you want to explore! You run around the school...literally, um, Momotami, slow the fuck down. It's enough that after an epic battle you appear, but now you are going as fast as Sonic?

Well, you go outside a few times, the first time, you see your Auntie who is doing work at the school apparently. Next time you do it you see to bandits attacking a girl, where you finally become awesome, because you transform into a magic woman, looking really powerful there by the way, and you beat the shit out of the bandits who attacked your friend. You turn back, talk to your silent friend, who will not say anything, and then...apparently the demo is over. That is it. I would try going outside again, but it will not let me go back out. Momotami keeps telling me that all that is needed, is done out there. I am just guessing here that she is talking about the girl...but I wanna leave school! *baby crying*
Oh sorry about that, well, that is basically it. So the score for me is...

Score:3.5 Because, I do not feel it's enough really to care much about. Sure it was interesting, but that is the only reason it doesn't get a lower rating.

  • Gameplay

Note:Gameplay counts twice here, because it's the basic part of a game. The root word for gameplay is game, and really, you mess up here, you deserve a bad score. If your graphics are epic, and your story is great, no one's going to care if your gameplay is bad.

To start off with, I have to say this. It's an RPG, you're going to get RPG stuff. You will get combat, you will get skills, you will get puzzles. From what I played of it though, it has no puzzles! The closest thing to puzzles you get, is dodging stuff. Yeah, never mind, THAT doesn't even count as a puzzle. What you dodge, is at the beginning of the game, and they are monsters. You don't have to dodge them, I just wanted to. The one time I touched one, it was just a monster as I've already said. So alright, that's been said, there are no puzzles.

The combat is the normal stuff you get from RPG maker VX Ace. It's just turn-based combat, you chose what you characters do, then the fight begins, you attack, monsters attack(not in that exact order), then repeat. You get lots of skills and moves when you begin the game with 2 characters. But they get defeated by the evil spirit. Now, keep this in mind that this is the beginning of the game, and a lot of times the first boss is fake and you are suppose to die on sometimes. Other times, it doesn't do this. That idea actually reminds me of Golden Sun when you fight "Mystery Man" and "Mystery Woman", then later on you find out who they are. Except this is with an evil spirit. Momotami in her first fight against bandits, she goes freaking super saiyan and defeats them in 1-2 hits! Now, I guess the Evil Spirit is WAY more powerful then a couple of bandits.

Momotami joins in as a gameplay element also, because along with the normal controls for RPG maker games, shift being run in VX and Ace, you are constantly going fast, don't kill me for referencing this but I just can't hold it in:

She's basically a human Sonic in this game. It's so insane how fast she goes, in RPG maker 2003, I pressed double-speed about 20 times to in the event editor when trying to make sure my character was super fast on the map, she goes about half that speed, and even being slower than my RPG maker character, it's still pretty fast. Remember, half of 20 double hero's speeds
.
That's pretty fucking fast.

Score:3 I cannot really say that there is that much interesting gameplay, but then again, it's a demo. What do you expect? I will have to say that the game play was average, nothing interesting, but at least it was there.

  • Graphics/Sound

Graphics-I'm just guessing that with a character generator, it's nice to see we can make our own character looks now, along with just our characters, but it seems like the other graphics, such as some face sets, look exactly like they were hand made, or gotten from an anime. If it's from an anime, then tell me which one.

Score:3 There just average, but still, what do you think you are gonna get with the character generator, a one billion dollar work of art?

Sound-The sound is what got me here, certain parts I just did not like, but others actually placed mood in the game. I am guessing the school is just really dull, because the music just sounds so boring for the school. It's as if everyone is singing in yawn. While Momotami's theme is really upbeat...kind of like her fe-*gets shot for trying to make the same joke again*

Well, besides that, the only other music I TRULY cared about was the battle music, but I think it's just the RTP music anyway. And I think that is ALL the music in this game really. Because I believe the school's theme also plays outside also, and I believe the music for the dungeon sounds somewhat like the battle music. So, I am not too sure about this. I believe just a...

Score:4 I feel this score here just is not fair, since some of that music is a bit mediocre, but mediocre is average which here is a 3. But I think that because the creator tried, I should give him credit for that at least.

Overall score:3.5 This deserves it...

  • Conclusion

Now, I feel I kind of enjoyed this game...kind a. did not really give much to offer, and really, I feel somewhat bad of maybe what the averaged score of all this is. Remember, gameplay counts twice, and the graphics and sound scores were averaged. So what is MY score for the entire game?

My score:3.5 Just above average. But here is the overall score of this game...

Overall score:3.5 It's exactly my score, so I guess that the score was perfect! I have to say, this game was not much, but at least it had something. And that is good enough for me, just above average. Gives you something to use I guess.

I hoped you like this review guys! See you next time!

Half the reason I chose to make Ruri's normal walk speed "2X faster" was to relay the sense of boundless energy she has. Like, she's on some kind of constant sugar high. Also, running up and down Iwayama's hallway at warp speed is... strangely fun. Maybe that's just me? I'm not sure if that speed is going to stick around, though. It depends on the mapping. My tendency has been to make small-ish maps with the idea that I don't have to work in as much detail. If I keep making maps like the hallway of Iwayama High, this game might turn out deviating from that tendency bit. However, I can't really say with any amount of certainty at this time.

The only other thing I wish to note at this time is the music. I know the "Nugget Crash Curse" version had nothing but RTP with the music category. I doubt you got that version, considering what I'm seeing with "Story". So, look to the Audio/BGM directory. If I included any outside material, the file names would indicate the source and title of the pieces. I might be guessing with some of the titles, however.

Yeah, I admit going really fast is fun. And I didn't know you made a nugget crash course version. But I shouldn't go backwards, you've already worked on this game further, and anything I would've had to say there may of already been done, and don't worry, I'll look in the audio/bgm source...later.

I didn't know you made a nugget crash course version.

One would only really know about the "Nugget Crash Curse" version if one was involved in that event, was a judge of said event, or clicked on the downloads tab. No real loss on your part, since, as you say, I've been working on it since then. To the betterment of the game, I would hope!
