Numina - a 4th wall breaking RPG which makes the characters and the world surrounding them aware of you - the player. Embark on an epic journey with them! Download the FREE DEMO now!

Story
It all begins in a remote village, where a young man called Shawn travels together with his friends to a nearby templesite, called the Temple of the Clouds. But the beauty of the scenery seems to be but a cover, as Shawn accidently discovers a secret basement in the temple.

There, Shawn gets into contact with you(!) - a guardian spirit. A bodyless entity from ancient tales... thattalks in his head! But Shawn has no time to worry as a mysterious, shrouded group arrive at the temple, questioning Shawns intrusion. Events spiral out of Shawn's control, dragging you along with Shawn and his friends into a fateful journey that will discover the true nature of your bond and the dark secrets of this world!

Gameplay
The main focus lies on the bond between you and Shawn and how well you two get along as you travel the world of Alterna. Shawn's affection towards you and other characters is influenced based on what you say to him during the course of the story!

The game incorporates a turn-based battle system, fused with action-commands for certain skills that require precise timed-inputs. Each character brings their own battle-style into play for a thrilling battle experience.

Upgrade your gear with materials that you find in the field, find hidden passages and rare treasures by using tools such as a grappling hook - or dive more into the lore of Alterna by completing sidequests!

FINALLY!

Second Chapter "Hoffnung" & HD-Glory!
Wow, it's been so long since I've been able to share some progress with you. I'm happy to announce that I'm not only making very good progress on Numina's 2nd chapter, titled "Hoffnung" (try to pronounce that :D It's German for "hope"). I'm currently planning on going into betatesting it in the later half of this year.

Check out more screens over at itch.io

I've also updated the entire game to HD (1280x720) and I'm really happy with the results. Please have a look for yourself at the attached screenshots. This was a huge undertaking since it required me to upgrade the project to RPG Maker MV, Which took a lot of time but also brought a lot of other advantages which I like to address in future updates :)

The Road to Patreon
I've been thinking about creating a Patreon for a while now. This project requires a lot of my creative energy, sweat, tears and especially time. It would be my dream to work on it fulltime but sadly I can't afford that, so I've been looking into alternatives that would allow me to spend more time on the project AND also keep on collaborating with other artists such as my very gifted & talented friend Thomas J. Peters who contributed the majority of Numina's soundtrack.

So if you like the project, please have a look at the Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/numina There's also a "behind the scenes"-like tutorial series, where I share my secret techniques for which I'd normally have to kill you :D If you ever wanted to look behind the black magic of a crazy effect or something you saw in the game, this is your chance! The first episode is free for everyone to enjoy while upcoming episodes will be Patreon exclusive:

If Patreon's not your thing you can also just buy the demo here itch.io or buy me a coffee.

Lastly, I want to thank each and everyone of you on here for staying with the project for all this time! Your comments are really motivating and interesting to read.

All the best and see you all soon!

the story sounds pretty intense, but some description of the game mechanics would be nice. I've never been one to get hooked into a game on story alone.
Hey, congratulations on managing to get Greenlit! Just in time before Valve shuts the whole thing down pretty soon! I was considering playing and reviewing the demo to help spread the word about it, but it looks like you fared fine on your own!

Thank you! Yeah, I was worried that I might not make it through Greenlight before it closes. I'll be releasing a small update with some fixes & improvements based on the feedback I got in the near future. You might want to check that out :)

Well, I usually go for shorter games on here, but yeah, I think I might just check out this update for this occasion.
Just found this through the screenshot forums. way to go on the greenlight. the maps a beautiful and the gameplay looks mighty intriguing. Subbed.
how do u access the english version
@theloathableone Thank you!

@Pdr313 The game contains both languages! It should automatically start in English if you're on an english system. But you can set the language in the in-game settings anytime.

Ok Found it Thnx
The demo did not start in english for me. But I found the option to change when I started the game.

I am very impressed with what you have done. You have accomplished everything graphically that I'm trying to do, but it seems that I'm falling short by quite a lot. I was wondering if everything you did for the start of the game was by events or there was some script involved? And are you using CSCA dungeon tools for the grappling hook? I want to use such tools but the script does not work for my game. Incompatibility with another one.

In short I would like to know how you have done what you have done. Not that I would reproduce it. But it's the sort of thing that need to be put in the make it popular enough to get greenlit. I have not put my game up yet, it's only 7% done.
Your game looks so fantastic and I downloaded the demo,
but unfortunately it doesn't works.
Every time I start the game, game.exe crashes.
Is it because of my PC?

Windows7
CPU Intel Core i5
RAM 16GB
the language is Japanese

The Error report says something went wrong with RGSS102E.dll,
then I tried to change the library to other versions of dll which I have like 104J or so.

Other games made with RMXP do work.
So I hope you'll give me a cue.

Thank you.

Hey Taro,

I've just uploaded an updated version of the Demo, please check if you have any issues with this version, otherwise let me know! You're PC should be more than enough to play the game. :)

Hello, stardust

Thank you for coping with it, but sorry demo didn't work again,
the error report says the same thing...

I think that this occurs when the PC's language setting is Japanese(or some other languages maybe)
Hi! Love the game a lot so far! The Story has gotten me hooked I will say!

Though I am having a bit of an issue with a certain stealth puzzle that occurs after the encounter in the forest of lost memories. Do you have any tips on getting past that area? Cause i'm currently stuck with no way to go

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying the story :) You actually have to sneak to the well on the left side, while the upper guard isn't looking. From there take the lower route towards the right, but make sure the guard there is occupied with reading while you pass him. Hope this helps!
A few glitches.

I selected english and got german in one spot. There is several places where you can walk in places that should be blocked. But it's only your starting scene so not too important. But when you're trying to make commercial then...

Pictures
@Roninator2 Thanks for the feedback! :)
Ohhhh boyyy this looks like a treat.
(Moving error stuff elsewhere)

Other than that, liking the game. Especially the creepy voiceovers.

Update: But not liking Masane. His whole sidequest risks Raphael's life, and he basically contributes nothing to combat. Well, except liking that he kicks Aziel's bum that one time. But then...
