A lone wanderer,

A curiously protective monster,

And a mysterious land caught in the clutches of darkness.

Overview

NOTE: To run this game you will need the RPG Maker VX Ace RTP. If you don't have it download this version:

~

In Vagabond, you control a young member of the Adventurer's Guild who often travels far beyond what is considered, well, reasonable. This time, our hero has stumbled upon a land called Granti, which is home to seven unique "Zones" that each have different characteristics and creatures wandering about. Granti is not your average ordinary land, though, as it is cursed. To return home, the "vagabond" must navigate through each zone to defeat a powerful monster in each one. The journey doesn't have to be made alone, however.

Accompanying our hero is a curious monster who shows a strange affection to people. This monster, who is at first just a lowly slime, can change its form throughout the course of the journey with the help of a few sages scattered across the land. But, will the vagabond and the monster be strong enough to defeat all of the fiends and save Granti from its impending doom? Only you can decide.

Gameplay

1. Challenging battles that are initiated by enemy touch on the overworld. Sometimes the smart thing is to avoid them when you can!

2. Open-ended, non-linear gameplay where you can explore almost any zone not too long after the starting point.

3. A heavy focus on exploration. Even more so than battles, exploration will be the most rewarding aspect of this game.

4. An "Augment" system where you can "equip" spells and other effects to use in battle, but at the cost of certain stats.

5. Non-traditional growth mechanics! These involve using special stones that you can buy from the menu and fighting optional bosses to grow stronger and learn new skills.

6. Transform your monster! At certain points throughout the game(if you can find them), you can choose certain options that will transform your loyal pet into different forms as well as grant some special effects to it. There will be over 40 different kinds of possible monsters that your beast can transform into.

Update! Both game-wise and life-wise.

I've decided to release a little update for Vagabond, adding something I've wanted to add for a while. Here are the changes this update brings:

- Various typos and errors have been corrected.
- Because I'm such a nice guy, you can now save just before the optional Venia fight during the monster arena.
- Credits, taken verbatim from the text file included with the game, have been added to the ending screen in the form of scrolling text.
- This is the big one: I've added back in the cut dungeon that acted as the game's final dungeon in the beta. The dungeon is now optional, however, and can be accessed once Venia is defeated(look for her in the final area). Completing the dungeon, which is no easy feat according to the testers, will unlock a more powerful version of the final boss as well as a secret scene in the ending. The rest of the story and gameplay remains the same.

So that's the 2.3 update for Vagabond, but what's been happening in my life? Why haven't I been at all active(besides lurking)?

Well, in late 2014 I had a bad bout of depression. I dropped out of my college classes and later quit my job. After the new year I was starting to feel a bit better, but felt stuck in the dingy, bible belt town I grew up in. So after a lot of hesitation but eventually support from my sister and my mom, who was fighting cancer, I left the nest to move to a big city.

I was too focused on adjusting to life in my new place to worry about game making. New job, new hobbies, new friends... Then in February, I moved back to my hometown to help take care of my mom, whose cancer had gotten worse despite fighting so hard. I figured, once she got out of the hospital, she'd need me around more than ever.

Well... She didn't make it. She died in April of 2016. It's been hard, and my family and I are all still healing. Since then, life hasn't been getting much better. I've been living with my dad, which isn't ideal for many reasons, and my depression has come back too. I can't be depressed forever, though, so I'm going to try and do something again that I've had a hard time with lately: create. Starting with this small update to a game already completed, to hopefully many more projects in the future. Basically what I'm trying to say is, I'm back. Hopefully.

Welp, thanks for taking the time to read this, and enjoy the new Vagabond update if you decide to play it.

Aww getting nostalgic looking at this again. I should really do something gammak soon.....
Long RPG. You traverse a sprawling open world area with your 2-member party. Difficulty balance is surprisingly good, although there was some pure BS that can happen if RNG didnt like you: for example, some bosses get 2-3 moves in one turn and I had a boss doublecast Death on 1 turn that instakilled my party, which was total bullsh@t. I've had this kind of thing happen on a couple of bosses so it was kinda annoying to fight them. One important thing about this game is that there are no EXP, only stat boosters, so you can min-max like a fiend. I didnt have the best strats because im too casual but I imagine a seasoned RPG player can easily get beyond overpowered.

Strats

Pet: Lizard>Scorpion
Basic DPS+healer strat. The protag was the healer and the pet was the physical DPS. Since I didnt know what kind of skills the protag was gonna get in the course of the game, I didnt really spec anything specific for them other than heal skills. (As it turns out the main only got physical skills and some crummy earth spells which many enemies were or appeared to be resistant to, what a waste.) For most of the early game I stuck with poison turtling, which worked quite well up until the mid game where bosses tried to remedy themselves. At that point I said screw it and dumped all the ATK boosters i saved onto the pet, and she took out the midgame bosses easily alongside poison. In the late game all bosses were outright immune to poison so the pet had to deal damage all by herself but she managed with the healz from the main character. I'm sure there are much better strats than this so go figure.

umm max....F12 works for all rpg m engines o.o

You also may wish to do some research b4 you make that claim about ravens o.o
/
anyway

random thoughts

interesting ability to choose things in the intro
even gender! :D

you get a freaking slime as a party member!? awesome :D
finally someone that does something different!

cliche story setup this is gonna get ugly

Mc is stupid? dam i hate this...
do this and this...simple right? even a elementary kid would not say "i don't understand"
or what does this mean" :/

if you pick the female gender when you get captured the wolfs refer to you as a male

elnias parents are black? but shes white!

the ending scene,i hated how it auto skipped the text.

Overall

This was somewhat better then expected. im more of a story person with good gameplay.
this for me was too battle heavy. taking away from the parts that i did enjoy.
great triggers and ideas.
the upgradable pet and pet tournament was awesome!
also liked the ending

the maps and dialog from npcs change a bit as you progress the game

in the ending cutscene i hated how it auto skipped.something that should be avoided if at all possible.
a huge downside story wise is that they are scenes obtainable in you can say any order so piecing the plot together requires good memory and or playing it all in 1-2 sittings
the playtime for this is 6+ hours

Closing
i recommend this mostly for those who like+ battles because thats what your gonna be doing over half the time here.
while there is some good points outside of that.
if you hate turn based battles its not worth it.

This looks REALLY cool.

E: I am enjoying this game a lot so far--the beginning is really hard, and can be quite frustrating; I imagine once my character has more abilities it will get easier, but I am generally of the opinion that games should get harder as they go along--but in any case, I ran into a slightly annoying design decision.

Why would you remove the 'Quit' option from your main menu? This means I have to hard exit the program with Alt + F4 and then reload the program to load a saved game rather than just quit to the title menu and then hit load. I know that the 'quit game' option is there by default in VX Ace, so why'd you disable it?

Edit 2: Not gonna lie, this annoyed me so much I cracked open your project in VX Ace, went into your scripts, and uncommented out the :game_end command from the COMMANDS array in YEA_Menu_System. Thanks for at least leaving your project unlocked; made me glad I know how to use RPG Maker, lol. I wish fixing things that annoyed me in the games I played was always this easy.

Edit 3: Did you seriously just suggest Ravens are allied with hell? As a bird lover I am outraged.

Messed up in the cave with the mermaids and other sea things. Orbed out and cannot get a hold of the boiler again. help?

Sorry for the delayed reply! If you're referring to the issue I think you are, then it's been patched in the latest version: a dock has been placed so you can raft across the water to reach the orb.

See:

If this is your issue, just download the latest version, transfer your save file, then bam! If it's something else, can you give some more details? Thanks!

meisam your not using semicolon properly, and that's a laughing matter.

There was a day that RPG was all about leveling up, it goes to the point that people forget that a RPG is all about choices. fix character with fix abilities + story dose not create a role playing game . I really enjoyed the amount of freedom in character creating and I enjoyed the game a lot thank you.

I have 1 suggestion for you, try to add the "diminishing return" in your game mechanic. it will increase the amount of thinking and planing on character creation, as the stats grow it should be harder to increase them so people try to find better more efficient way to create their supper powerful characters

edit: oh and thanks for no evasion, I really hate it when so much randomness mess my battles :).

edit2: I noticed you talked about bad ending, is there more than one ending? and if so how to achieve other endings?
Even though I quitted this game I really did enjoy what I saw. Especially the graphics and the fighting they were the two things that kept me playing for as long as I did.
I made this video in a hour today to show someone the Gates song from Vagabond...
Thought you would like to see it xD I should have done a better job, but alas!

I finished it!

Oh man, the bad ending xD I thought at first you had to try to defeat your companion when it gives you the chance to attack. I held back when I played... But, it seems it forces you to stop attacking :P

Loaded back to the last sage, and yep! That did the trick D:
My hero is really a busy guy, sorry Izzy, I gotta go home now... Bye...
*tug tug* *weep weep*
Sorry! Bye bye!

... What becomes of the hero is quite unique though. Well played D: Even if you would have given the player a chance to try to escape, if you're lost, it's only a matter of time before the ground crumbles beneath you D:

*ahem* I got the good ending first...
I thought you were going to put me in a hard place for a minute, making me fight my companion... That would have been an interesting final battle, but awful! :P I imagined you'd defeat Izzy and then end up under the curse or under his control...
But, Elnia is amazingly strong.

I could keep rattling on for a while... but let me keep it short and say, the quality of the game was great all the way through. Even the story caught me by surprise...
Oh, Elnia...

I think I would have told her parents though. They probably would have liked to know all about what she did, how she saved all those people that they saw appear; including the hero. Alas!

One last bug report, this time in the dialogue :
In the final lines, "I'll never forgot the time we spent together."
I watched the end again to make sure.... It says, I'll never forgot the time we speant together." Instead of I'll never >forget< the time we spent together.

Oh and there was one other line, could be intended; after defeating the Demon XOKTOR (hopefully I spelled his name right... I always avoid saying names... bad with them...), he says something like "We could have ruled the world together <insertyournamehere>"
There's no period at the end of that line I believe..., I don't recall seeing any other lines that have no punctuation at the end, so just reporting that in case.

And that... is the end of my journey into Vagabond... (for now)
If you ever make another game? I hope to play it too!

PS. I got the Awesome Badge >;D That was a rough battle...
Stats were a little bit lower than :

Abused Seduce on the Light Essence, since that magic shield got me killed a couple of times lol Seduce is 100% guaranteed confusion? She really must be something ;D Going around charming snakes, wisps, humans... everyone is so confused...
Thanks XCalibar!

The battle gameplay was really tense and quite fun. It was tough for my party! Especially, since I tried to avoid resting too often...
The toughest battles were :
The marsh fiend, the dark werewolf area fiend, and the shapeshifter of the crystal cave. The fiends killed me at least a few times..., and the shapeshifter was a constant life or death struggle the entire time. Because, my character and companion were both magic users!
Oh! That's right, she ran out of magic. ...... lol That might be a bug...?

Haha, those are everyone's hardest bosses...and Venia...*laughs maniacally*

The gameplay completely changed after I went to the jungle however... I guess I can only blame myself, but up until that point, the battles were taxing on my party; had to keep focused. But, after spending a hour or two at the monster battles... xD I turned over a new leaf. I ran around one-shotting most of the tree area, and had to hold back during the fiend to give him a chance to fight back xD

Yes, the arena is...there for this purpose. :D

My character chose : Male -> Magic -> Family, and became a sorcerer. (Have you played Lunar?? Because I felt like I was playing Ghaleon with the skills I was getting ;D I lovedddd it lol)

YES. Although that was not an inspiration. :P

I am curious to see if dialogue changes if I start a new game and choose revenge, if my happy-go-lucky attitude becomes something darker...

There are a few lines that change, yes. It's pretty minor, though. The bad ending has the most variation there.

As for the mapping... Great job!!! It's really very well put together, and a pleasure to run around the world. I'm not sure which area would be my favorite... The Dark Plains were pretty fun... The lake area actually felt like hte smallest of the areas, since there was no extra areas outside the dungeon. The lake was nice though...

Great music. Nice choices. I love listening to the Wall safe area theme. In fact, I'm listening to it while I write this ;D

As for the story : It turned out to be quite interesting, though I still consider it limited... More along the lines with how much story you get out of a game like Zelda : Link to the Past. I'm interested to see how it all ends!

I'm glad you enjoyed everything. :D
I'm about to enter the tower! Close to finishing the game...

I've really enjoyed Vagabond, though I wish there was some interaction between your companion and yourself~ I've been thinking that the game reminds me of Final Fantasy Legend's spirit somehow... But, can't quite put it into words...

Anyway! Here are a few strange things I encountered :

When rescuing your companion from the case of the werewolf's curse, when they rejoined my party, it left a duplicate of my companion facing to the right, where I talked to them. It's minor, and it goes away after leaving the room.

After defeating the fiend of that dark werewolf area, there's a cave which leads to the jungle, where you can pick up a bottle for magic water. If you go into the cave after beating the fiend, but leave and go back to the dark field, the music, lighting and cave dripping sounds continue while walking around outside.

On that same note, in the jungle festival bar place, after defeating the fiend; if you enter from the top of the bar, it will be dark and raining inside D:

In the expert Monster Tournament, the Iron Giant, the 11th monster you fight has never hit me even once! I don't know if my monster is just immune to his attack type or what... Made my life easier though :P
At that point my monster Izzy, chose :
I took damage from melee attacks by the Vampire and Angel.

After the flashback cutscene with Eliza the sage in the jungle, your companion is on top of your character D:

Oh, and THIS HAS to be a bug

He should say, "Your monster looks pa..."
*gulp* xD

"Not a critter!"

Oh, wish there was a way to rename my companion later in the game...
Izzy was the name I chose for the Slime... Who knew "she" would end up being a lovely Harpy D: Izzy, doesn't quite cut it later on!
Roleplaying, I thought about calling Izzy, Eliza... And then lo and behold, I run into the last sage, her name Eliza! (Izzy ... Lizzy ... Eliza)
Would be a fitting tribute to the Sages sacrifices if I named her that...

And on that note, time to finish the game and also beat the Expert Monster Tournament (though I worry if I powerup any more, the tower will be far too easy!)
I played Vagabond 1.1 demo earlier today and finished it! I immediately went online to see if a full version was out... and YES!

It sounds like it is safe to copy the old 1.1 demo saves to the new one?
I copied them over, and then went and re-beat the swamp boss (my third fiend), it still gives me the "Technically you've reached the end of the demo" message... A little worried about that! But, it seems like I can proceed into the other areas now~

Anyway, nice work on this... That personalization in the beginning and the not-too-serious dialogue kept me moving right along.
When I reached the first sage though, with their banter I realized the limitations of this game: it wasn't going to end up too large or deep of a story, but on the other hand, it's focused, and it's fun to wander around seeing the world (and look for upgrades for Izzy! ... A sorcerer... and his Dove... D:)
Now, back to the game! :D

This is a pretty fun game, but I seem to have run into a gamebreaking bug...

I made it to the shapeshifter in the crystal caverns, but she was way to strong for me so I used my gate orb and decided to grind some money elsewhere.
The problem is I left one of the furnace orbs on the pillar in the room to the right of the three pillars, and now there is a lake in my way so I can't get back across.

Hmmm, yeah. I can see what you're talking about. I'll shoot you a PM and we'll see if we can get this fixed. I feel stupid not seeing this problem occurring before. >_<

Playing this game during a work travel where I have little to do in the evening, so I'm playin' a lot. This game is pretty easy (the first time I had to re-play was on the Nocturnal plains foe) but it gives you a good freedom feeling, that's not bad. My viper is getting stronger (but not changing lately) and normal encounters are truly a breeze. In the ice cave now... a little brain to put in, it seems! ;)

Enjoyable.

Yeah, this game is pretty easy haha. Though when it was just a demo everyone thought it was really hard haha. The freedom to explore was kind of the goal, so I'm glad you noticed it! Thanks for playing, and it's great that you actually like it! XD

Very nice game.
Well balanced neatly done!
Love it!!!

Especially the battle with venia. That battle was awesome.

It's, uh, less balanced than you know. :P

Venia was a mixed bag. Some people liked it, and others hated the first 11 battles before her. I can't really blame them!

By the way what is that badge i recieved after the battle.
It is whithin the key items but seems to have no use?

It's just a trophy sort of thing with no other purpose. The more practical reward was the boatloads of Gold and VP afterwards. Still, who doesn't want an "Awesome Badge"? ;)

I managed to to get the behemoth companion beefed up to 700+ attack power!
Really cool along with the druid attributes of the main caracter.

:D

Will there be a sequel for this game?

Anyways thx for this wonderfull game.

I am still stuck in that damned ice cave.
Lol, I no the feeling. I just hate puzzles though. The ice one is very nicely done though. Zeuzio needs to start making another game already, instead of reading this...:)
