Augment Guide

In Vagabond, instead of the usual Armor to equip you have Augments. There are two types of Augments, Tomes and Relics. Tomes are books that teach the user a magic spell. As long as you have a tome equipped, you can use its corresponding spell in battle. Tomes also affect your stats, some positively and some negatively. Relics are similar to Accessories from other games, and have a wide range of effects. You have six slots to allocate both your tomes and relics to, so choosing what combination to use often depends on your situation.

There are 20 of each type of augment, making for a total of 40. Also, they are hidden throughout Granti, so you might have to search every corner and talk to every NPC to find them. Below are each tome and relic that you can find in the game and their effects.

~Magic Tomes~

Refresh Tome
Spell Effect: Heal a small amount of HP.
MP Cost: 5
Status Change: DEF+5
Location: Lonely Forest, very first area.
Tips: This is likely the very first spell you'll find. Equip it immediately, and don't take it off for a long time. You'll need it for making it through the Lonely Forest for the first time. There are no negatives stat wise for equipping this, so take advantage of it.

Restore Tome
Spell Effect: Heal a fair amount of HP.
MP Cost: 10
Status Change: +10 DEF, +5 INT, -5 LUK, -5 SPI
Location: Thieves' Fortress, room with the bridges.
Tips: I'd recommend immediately replacing the Refresh Tome with this, unless you just need some light healing. This spell can likely heal almost all of a character's HP, which is great for boss battles.

Replenish Tome
Spell Effect: Heal a great amount of HP.
MP Cost: 25
Status Change: +20 DEF, +10 INT, +5 AGI, -10 LUK, -10 SPI, -5 ATK
Location: Marala Lake, Crystal Cavern; In the room one screen left from the three pillars room, inside a chest in the bottom right corner, guarded by an ice snake.
Tips: Besides providing a significant boost to defense, Replenish will likely heal all of a character's HP even later in the game. However, Restore will probably be a better choice for the middle part of the game.

QuickHeal Tome
Spell Effect: Heal a small amount of HP, and act first in battle.
MP Cost: 10
Status Change: +10 LUK, -5 AGI
Location: Nocturna Plains, Palace of Granti; In the room above the bottom floor, cross the gap with the grapple rope and head to the room on the right. QuickHeal is in the first chest.
Tips: Quick Heal is like a slightly improved Refresh Spell that allows the user to act first in battle. It's great for when you have low agility but need healing quickly. The only drawback is the lackluster status bonuses.

SlowCure Tome
Spell Effect: Heal 15% of HP each turn.
MP Cost: 15
Status Change: +10 AGI, +5 DEF, -5 ATK
Location: Lonely Forest, Oneo's cave
Tips: This spell might be good to equip if you AGI is lacking, or if you have a large amount of HP that can regenerate quickly with this spell.

FullHeal Tome
Spell Effect: Fully heal an ally's HP, status and debuffs, but be the last to act in the turn.
MP Cost: 30
Status Change: +10 ATK, -5 INT, -5 SPI, -5 AGI
Location: Sentia Jungle, Monster Arena; Can be purchased for 200 VP.
Tips: Full Heal is a risky move, but is ultimately the best healing spell in the game. Replenish, however, is the better choice unless you know you'll be dealing with many status effects and debuffs.

Revive Tome
Spell Effect: Revive an ally from death with 50% HP.
MP Cost: 20
Status Change: +10 DEF, -5 ATK
Location: Ryvanel Village, near the Thieves' Pass chest
Tips: Basically the same effect as a Life Water. I wouldn't recommend equipping this one unless you're running low or are out of Life Waters.

Retalize Tome
Spell Effect: Revive an ally from death with 100% HP.
MP Cost: 40
Status Change: +15 DEF, +10 AGI, -10 ATK, -5 INT
Location: Sentia Jungle, Monster Arena; Can be purchased for 300 VP.
Tips: The best revival option in the game, for sure. Nothing else can revive with full HP, so if you're worried about dying, equip this for sure.

Remedy Tome
Spell Effect: Cure status ailments and debuffs.
MP Cost: 15
Status Change: +10 INT, +10 SPI, -5 ATK, -5 DEF
Location: Gorgorel Swamp, near the entrance to South Gate
Tips: A good equip for magical characters, and can be found as soon as you find South Gate. Also good for healing status effects without wasting potions.

Haste Tome
Spell Effect: Raise ATK and AGI for 4 turns.
MP Cost: 20
Status Change: +25 LUK, -5 ATK DEF INT SPI AGI
Location: Sentia Jungle, Great Sentia Tree; In the northern root, guarded by a Sentia Overseer.
Tips: This spell is great to use on a powerful physical fighter. You can also stack this spell once, raising your power even more. It also cancels out ATK and AGI debuffs from skills like Slow and Hex. This spell is definitely a winner for the end-game.

Fireball Tome
Spell Effect: Deal flame damage to one enemy.
MP Cost: 10
Status Change: +10 ATK, -10 DEF
Location: Lonely Forest, near Oneo's Cave on the ledge.
Tips: You'll find this spell early in the game in Lonely Forest. Flame is a strong element against many of the forest's monsters, but the defense loss from equipping the tome makes not dying harder. Try equipping the spell only when you know it'll be effective, like vs. plants and snakes, but not for sprites and imps.

Eruption Tome
Spell Effect: Deal flame damage to all enemies.
MP Cost: 25
Status Change: +20 ATK, -20 DEF
Location: Nocturna Plains; Inside a cave guarded by a sealed door, one screen left from East Gate (Soul Candle Required)
Tips: Definitely a great choice for a physical-based character. The attack bonus will help with damage output while the spell itself can be used as a magical backup. Just make sure you can hold up with 20 less defense points.

Splash Tome
Spell Effect: Deal water damage to one enemy.
MP Cost: 10
Status Change: +10 AGI, -10 LUK
Location: Gorgorel Swamp, main swamp area south from the west exit.
Tips: Once you find South Gate, this spell is easy to obtain. However, there aren't very many water-weak enemies in the demo except for a few bosses. Gorgorel Swamp's and Ryvanel Village's Shapeshifters, though, are weak against it.

Flood Tome
Spell Effect: Deal water damage to all enemies.
MP Cost: 25
Status Change: +20 AGI, -20 LUK
Location: Marala Lake, inside Yolaz's lair (must have beated the boss)
Tips: The agility bonus can be critical for success for some boss fights, and many bosses happen to be weak to water. Otherwise Quake is the best choice for general spell casting.

Smash Tome
Spell Effect: Deal earth damage to one enemy.
MP Cost: 10
Status Change: +10 INT, -10 SPI
Location: Ryvanel Village, near Tabatha's House.
Tips: Simply equipping this spell boosts the power of your spells thanks to increased INT, and many demo enemies are weak against Earth, including the hardest boss. If yours is a mage type character, don't miss this spell tome!

Quake Tome
Spell Effect: Deal earth damage to all enemies.
MP Cost: 25
Status Change: +20 INT, -20 SPI
Location: Sentia Jungle; Northernmost area, in a chest left of the Sage and guarded by a Jungle Eye. (Must have bottle)
Tips: The ultimate spell for magic-based characters for much of the game, if you can find it. Its +20 INT bonus makes quite an impact for spells in general, and many of the games enemies have an earth weakness. Just be careful with 20 points missing from the spirit stat.

Poison Tome
Spell Effect: Inflict Poison on all enemies.
MP Cost: 10
Status Change: +10 DEF, +10 SPI, +10 LUK, -5 ATK, -5 INT, -5 AGI
Location: Gorgorel Swamp, Main Swamp Area all the way south of the west exit, guarded by a Marsh Eye.
Tips: Poison actually works on most enemies, even bosses. Though it may be worthy of equipping just because of all the defensive bonuses. You can decide that for yourself, though.

Reaper Tome
Spell Effect: Instantly kill a foe.
MP Cost: 25 MP and 25 TP
Status Change: +10 ATK, +10 LUK, -5 DEF, -5 INT, -5 SPI
Location: Nocturna Plains; One screen left of the shapeshifter(Soul Candle Required)
Tips: Despite having not so great bonuses and tacking on an extra cost in TP, Reaper is actually a very effective death spell. Use it to defeat extra hard enemies early on for great loot! It won't work on most bosses, though.

Slow Tome
Spell Effect: Lower AKT and AGI for 4 turns.
MP Cost: 10
Status Change: +5 ATK, +5 DEF, +5 INT, +5 SPI, +5 AGI, -25 LUK
Location: Gorgorel Swamp, Main Swamp Area in the northeast part of swamp; must have Golem Axe.
Tips: This might be the last spell you find, since you need the Golem Axe to find it and it's in a discreet location anyway. However, once you do find it, It might help you with a certain boss tremendously. Unfortunately, it will make you a non-lucky person with the -25 LUK, but at least everything else is given a boost, right?

Hurricane Tome
Spell Effect: Deal a large amount of storm damage to 4 enemies.
MP Cost: 50
Status Change: +30 INT, -15 ATK, -15 DEF, -15 AGI
Location: Sentia Jungle, Urvan's Lair (Must have defeated boss)
Tips: It may bear a heavy burden on certain stats, but Hurricane is the best offensive spell in the game and is well worth it. The huge INT bonus further increases the might of itself and the other spells in your arsenal, and deals huge damage to single enemies. Seriously, use this spell.


~Relics~

Detox Relic
Effect: Prevent Poison and Confusion
Location: Ryvanel Village, Thieve's Pass area on top, guarded by a plunderer

Loudmouth Relic
Effect: Prevent Silence and Sleep
Location: Lonely Forest, west of the entrance to Oneo's cave, guarded by a Killer Plant

Mobility Relic
Effect: Prevent Paralyze and Stun
Location: Gorgorel Swamp, Main Swamp Area; East side of the swamp on some grass

Flame Relic
Effect: Reduce flame damage
Location: Nocturna Plains, Palace of Granti; On the bottom floor, take the left set of stairs that is guarded by two werewolves.

Earth Relic
Effect: Reduce earth damage
Location: Sentia Jungle; In the area where the bottle is found.

Water Relic
Effect: Reduce water damage
Location: Marala Lake, Crystal Cavern; The room right of the three pillars room, in a bottom-right corner chest guarded by a Devil Fish.

Life Relic
Effect: Prevent instant death
Location: Marala Lake, Crystal Cavern; In the large circular room with the furnace orb pillar in the middle, slide along the right side until you see the chest to the right. Must have broken the ice pillars with the switch.

Resist Relic
Effect: Prevent all bad status effects, but all stats are lowered.
Location: Sentia Jungle, Great Sentia Tree; West Root, guarded by an Asura.

Melee Relic
Effect: Reduce damage taken from melee attacks
Location: Ryvanel Village, Young Warrior's home

Aerial Relic
Effect: Reduce damage taken from aerial attacks
Location: Nocturna Plains; 1 screen north of the Palace of Granti; surrounded on 4 sides by ghosts.

Health Relic
Effect: Raise max HP by 25%
Location: Sentia Jungle, Monster Arena; can be purchased for 100 VP.

Mana Relic
Effect: Raise max MP by 25%
Location: Nocturna Plains, Palace of Granti; From the room where your monster ally was a prisoner, take to top-right flight of stairs, and head right. The chest is guarded by a spider.

Strength Relic
Effect: Raise ATK by 25%
Location: Lonely Forest, inside Groak's lair(must have beaten the boss)

Vitality Relic
Effect: Raise DEF by 25%
Location: Ryvanel Village, south area of town; purple haired NPC holds it(must have defeated the area's boss)

Genius Relic
Effect: Raise INT by 25%
Location: Gorgorel Swamp, inside Lilia's Lair(must have beaten the boss)

Soul Relic
Effect: Raise SPI by 25%
Location: Sentia Jungle; From the festival area, take the top-right exit. It's guarded by a Sentia Flower

Speed Relic
Effect: Raise AGI by 25%
Location: Gorgorel Swamp, southern swamp area, guarded by a succubus.

Forune Relic
Effect: Raise LUK by 25%
Location: Ryvanel Village, Nervous Woman's home, the woman holds it(Must have defeated the area's boss)

Wealth Relic
Effect: Doubles money earned from battles
Location: Marala Lake: Fario's Trading Post, after trading 5 Lucky Medals

Hoarder's Relic
Effect: Doubles items found from battles
Location: Marala Lake: Fario's Trading Post, after trading 3 Lucky Medals
