The Doom Random Battle Fan Game

Doom RPG: Evil Unleashed is an indie game created with OHRRPGCE (That's a lot of letters!) This is a fan game of a first person shooter that was prominent on the PC many years ago. I can feel that the developer really likes the Doom franchise and people who are into Doom may find something to like in this game. For other people this game might be a pass.

The main character has decided to resolve conflicts in a turn based style this time around.

The game's presentation at the start is actually quite well done. There is a nice intro scene that almost looks animated and the dialogue between characters is voice acted. There's was a lot of effort put into getting this experience off the ground. The graphics are a bit rough and crude, but the developer tries his best to replicate the feel of Doom in a top down environment. The music in the background is from Doom, but the soundtrack just repeats itself over and over again. I found myself getting a tad annoyed with it after some time.

I'm not looking too good, might need a stimpack.

The encounter rate in the game isn't too bad and you can find a lot of drops on the ground. exploration is encouraged and needed in this game. The combat uses a ATBS system, which means you need to wait for your attack gauge to fill up before attacking. Due to this the enemies will sometimes get two turns to attack you before you get your turn. The enemies also hit for a lot of damage. You'll be using your healing items quite frequently. The level up system is interesting. When you level up you can spend points on different stats and character abilities. But this is probably the only upside of the combat system. The combat in this game is way too difficult to start the game with.

This game does exactly what it want to do for the most part. It writes a love letter to the Doom franchise, but for people unfamiliar with with Doom this won't be enough to put up with some of the game's problems. And since there will be some people satisfied with this game, and others not, I feel it fair to give this game a 2.5 / 5 (right down the middle.)
