Dragon Quest + Demo is Live!

Yup, the first public demo is available now to download. I've tried my best to make this a solid and enjoyable experience. In order to get the best look out of 2k3 games in the official release or fan translation, please run the game in full screen mode.

It's finally here! The Demo For Dragon Quest + is available to everyone this time around, and if you've tested the old game before, testing this version is like night and day, so get it a try!

Notes:

* Gameplay Demo is 90 Minutes, or 1 Hour and 30 Minutes long. After that time is up the game will shut down. You however, can restart as many times as you'd like. I put a time restriction on because not only is Dragon Quest a rather short game, but I want the full experience to be there when the full game releases.

*If you find any bugs, please notify me when you can. Preferably with Screenshots if possible.

*If you have any feedback regarding difficulty, dialogue, etc. also make sure to notify me.

*The game SHOULD work without the RTP installed, if it doesn't you'll have to install the 2k3 RTP for now.

*If you run into any soft locks, which can happen based on the custom menu system/switch management, also take a screenshot of it. I haven't encountered a soft lock in test play in some time. I just ran through the demo without any issues, so it is at least a sound and solid demo.

*Some events like meeting God scenarios, new story developments, were removed to enhance the demo experience.

Again, I truly hope you enjoy this demo and I hope that it at least lives up to Dragon Quest fan's expectations. If it doesn't. don't hesitate to tell me.

I hope you enjoy it!

Also, you can't level up past 19, even though it displays 26000 EXP. I fought the Golem and the Mad Knight, got to like 32000 EXP, wondering why I wasn't like level 21 at that point.

Looks like Green Dragon's been replaced, as well. RIP.

I didn't implement levels past 19 yet, I kind of didn't expect anyone to get there in this demo. Guess I was wrong, lol. I'll also implement up to level 30 in the patch.

And yes, the Green Dragon is gone too and replaced with a Hacksaurus. I kind of wanted this game to not be too familiar with people who have played the first Dragon Quest a million times like myself. But I can easily implement a "Classic Mode" for the final release, but that's a little ways off.

It's been a while since I last posted. I managed to get stuck at the part of needing the rainbow bridge. I could never find the boy that is normally in DQ1 to progress. Also have fun with the new DQ that has come out?

Ah, I think you mean the Fairy Flute? The Fairy Flute quest takes place in Rimuldar, you need to explore the outer edges of town to engage that quest. The rainbow bridge is made once you find the rain staff and sun stone. Find both of those and find the sun Shrine to the most south east of the map.

And yeah, my eyes have actually gotten better lately. I have gotten about 30 hours in to DQXI and am enjoying it so far. I'm not making as much progress due to the fact that my eyes aren't 100% but still I'm making progress. Thanks for asking. I'll try to make the new sidequests more apparent in future builds, I just didn't want to make a 1:1 remake of the game in terms of story telling.

Using Evac in Domdora caused me to get a black screen with Maira's music playing, probably because I had recently been there. On a related note, it is difficult to find the Fairy Flute in this version. Also, is it just me, or are the encounters in Domdora nerfed compared to the NES version? At least now you only encounter the same monsters as in the desert surrounding the ruins.

Huh, well that's not good. I probably know what's wrong and I'll fix it soon. Yeah the Fairy Flute starts with a quest in Rimuldar, you need to initiate a side quest within the outskirts of the town (in the same map though) to find the flute, it's still in Maira but there's some events that need to happen before you can actually get it. I did this because I wanted to make the game more like a linear RPG compared to the first DQ. I might change it though in the final build.

I tried to lower the encounter rate in Domdora as I found it frustrating in my playthough, but I can up the rate if that's what the fans want. This is more based off of the SFC/GBC version though. I haven't had much time to work on the game but I'll try to have an update out soon that addresses some of these issues.

Edit: I just fixed the Domdora Evac issue, just something silly I did. It'll be a part of the new patch.

Thank you both for the feedback.

Playing the silver harp doesn't make monsters come at you, it does the exact opposite. It kills the music, stops encounters, and doesn't let you open the menu.
Also you can't be damaged by terrain.
However you can still travel to towns and such. That fixes the menu and music as a result.
This a little thing you put in to make travel easier for now?
The encounter rates seem to be broken now as well even without the harp after exiting a town same for damaging terrain. This also works in dungeons.

I became aware of the Silver Harp error a couple days ago and I have fixed it. It's like when I fix one buy 4 more appear. It's getting annoying. But yes, I've fixed the functionality that has caused you so much trouble. Will be updating today.

The princess disappears when you rescue her and runs from the walls to go behind you. It scared me to be honest.

Hum...haven't encountered that myself. Strange. Perhaps it's a result of the Silver Harp bug as well.

Fatima says theif instead of thief.
Fixed now.

After you return the princess she says stat away from you instead of stay away from you. (That's easy to miss if you don't talk to her.)
Speaking of is there actually a different way to talk to her besides the item?

Fixed, also there will be a way to interact with her in the post game as she becomes part of the party. For the main game I wanted to make sure to mimic the first game when handling the princess.

Also there is a set of stairs taunting me forever in the throne room.
I can't get the flute and progress further since I can't find the NPC, so this is where I'm stopping anyway.
I can't fight anything after all since the harp broke the game.

Stairs in the throne room are for post game as well. The Fairy flute is in the game. You must make sure to do the sidequest in Rimuldar before obtaining the flute though. And the NPC, Roric will tell you where to find it.

That Harp was game breaking and I hate that I found out about it too late. I will be updating everything and putting up a new demo soon. I'm glad this is a demo and not a full release, no telling what bugs will be created from fixing others. Thanks again for your support in finding these bugs.

I've made a quick patch for the game, you can get it in the downloads section.

Just extract it in the same directory as DQ+. Should fix most of the errors you've found today.

Accidently hit new game. Still having the name problem where the -> arrow doesn't work properly.

The guard in castle Radatome's treasury says to bring our princess back to us twice. Damage tiles sometimes don't damage you after a second step on the electrical floor in same castle.
Due to the way the custom step counter is evented/coded, that's something I have to deal with at the moment. It doesn't use 2k3's damage terrain. I'll see if I can make it a tad more accurate, but I wouldn't expect much.

I've fixed the dialogue errors.

A guard in Garai in the house you need a magic key says after asking him where the grave is by hitting "yes" says.
"I can't gell you that."
The stairs near that same guard don't seem to work and act as a floor.
In the tomb of Garai there is a piece of paper on the wall that looks important, yet doesn't interact with anything.

The Guard in Garai is supposed to say that based off the Japanese translation/script.

It's like, Garai's Grave is so cursed that he doesn't want to let you know or be the cause of your death.

Took the stairs out too, It was supposed to put a bar/pub in there but I decided against it and forgot to remove it. It's gone now!

Glad the issues have been lessened! Thanks for the feedback!
Yep! I figured it might be something like that for the guard, but I have to be sure anyway. I bet the monsters were originally the same way, but I still have to comment on it. Having a blast with it so far. Being able to change the battle music keeps it fresh.

Yes, same with the monsters. But yes, thanks for making sure. I'm glad you're having fun with the game! During development I found the original battle music to be okay, but it gets annoying after a while. Which is why all the themes are included. If you're feeling adventurous...try Battle Music from 13... XD

In the tomb of Garai 1F there is a piece of paper on the wall that looks important, yet doesn't interact with anything. (is it like that normally?)

On B3 of the grave of Garai there is an invisible tile blocking progress on the left part of root right above the grave for some reason. There is also a root that does the same on B2 near the same set of stairs that lead to it.
Actually it's all the roots with that sprite. (I just figured out having the sunstone means I notice these things in a different way, it's supposed to hinder people fumbling around in the dark. Nvm lol)

Druin Lord's pretty much are a non-encounter with how much they forget.
Wolf Lord has the same problem as he casts fizzle too much.

Wow, that's strange. I'm on Windows 10 and RPG Maker 2k3 runs great. This is another reason why working with 2k3 is sometimes a pain, the resolution. I can help you troubleshoot the game in fullscreen mode. Afm game starter kind of runs games a bit choppy in my experience. But at least it works.

I'll get a converted version up with the official release of Rpg Maker 2003 so people can play this game without issue. In the newest update I've taken out the timer so you can play freely. Please give that one a try.
I have an education version of windows 10 so that may be it?
I decided to run the game in compatibility mode to go around the draw read error that I still get with RPG_RT.exe even with the latest patch. I really wanted to try something else so it'd be one less step for anyone else playing, but this seems to be the only way I can find.

Right click RPG_RT.exe
Go to properties.
Go to the Compatibility tab.
Run this program in compatibility mode for (Windows 7)
I'd suggest this to anyone having the same problem with windows 10 or 8 or 8.1 with Draw Read errors.

The save files transfer over fine btw.
I'll be testing those areas earlier for bugs with RPG_RT.exe now.
I don't have a black screen at Xen's house or at the well in Miora at all now. I also now can't move faster spamming the menu. I can save in II and III now.
I'll stop play at Rimuldar level 10 since that is around where world's speed record holder (https://www.speedrun.com/run/1zxoolkz) is at 90 mins without RNG manipulation.

Currently working on these bugs, seems some of them are timer based and some are just silly on my part. Like killing an enemy twice, I had that happen once during a playthrough and I guess I need to put in some wait operations for further stability. Thank you for taking time to give feedback, issues should be resolved by midweek or Friday.
I figured, but I like to make sure things don't go overlooked.
Speaking of the timer in the upper left seems to be broken, but I have around 40 mins playtime atm. We'll see what happens once it reaches 90 mins.

I doubled checked with the Xan crash, it's consistent. To anyone playing this demo don't read the book.
Also, I haven't been able to re-create that Xen crash. There's no event/code in the book of his house. That's strange. I'll try though.

Just tested Maira well, and I haven't gotten any black screens. This is really weird. I tested the game well enough to make sure there wouldn't be any soft locks/screens. Could you try to replicate that issue? I can give you a God Mode demo if you need it so you won't have to grind.

Edit: This may be because of the differences between RPG Tsukuru 2003 and Rpg Maker 2003. But in the update, I've made sure you don't need RPG Maker to run the game. Please, instead, run the RPG_RT.exe to run the game.

Edit 2: Actually, I just patched up these few issues. Will be uploading a new version soon.

RPG_RT.exe only gives me direct draw errors, so I've been running afm_game starter.exe to play. Chances are that's why I'm getting half the errors and blackscreens and such. I think it's Windows 10's fault personally from what I looked up about it. There is a chance that there is a way that capability mode or a old driver file fixes it, but I haven't had the time atm.

I did mash the interact button near the book, but it's more likely the building itself. Going through the game normally feels better for finding these sorts of things. The fights are brief unlike the original, so it doesn't set me back too much, level 1 is just a pain.
