Villnoire is Complete!

Yes, you read that right! Villnoire is complete! It’s not a joke, I wouldn't be that cruel.

Part of me doesn’t know what to write. I mean, just look at that date. 02/20/2008, unbelievable isn't it? The 16 year old Little Wing Guy that created this game page never thought this day would come, but what a journey this has been. An 11 year journey filled with two cancellations, two remake attempts, and buckets of disappointment for all the people subscribed to this game. Sorry about that, hopefully this release will make up for it. Granted, I haven’t been working on it for a full straight 11 years; around 3 years ago I picked this up from the bottom of the gutter, wiped away all the stains of vapourware and started again from scratch. This idea, this dream has stayed with me for all those 11 years though, and I can finally stamp those magic words “Completed” in all its green font glory. Excuse my language, but it feels fucking amazing.

I’ve poured my heart and soul into this game. Honestly, I have. This game isn’t perfect, but it is me through and through. I’m immensely proud of this game; I don’t think I personally could have made it any better. It deals with themes and ideas that are really close to home. My passion for this game, world and characters has stayed with me for these 11 years, and I hope it translates over to everyone who plays it. I want nothing more to gift this game to RMN and let the community enjoy it and of course get featured and earn Misaos. Villnoire has been such a huge part of my life, but I think for a long time I’m still going to be opening up RPG Maker, blanking staring at the database before it dawns on me that I don’t actually need to anymore.

A big part of why this game is completed is because of RMN. I have a huge thank you to say to so many members of this community, I wouldn't know where to start. People here have had faith in me, even when I didn’t have any in myself. People may think it’s silly, but Villnoire is one of my proudest achievements in life. This game is a symbol of not giving up (unless we’re talking about my social life because that went a loooong time ago lol).

Anyway, if you’re reading this and you’ve recently played Theia, but thought to yourself “I would much rather play a shorter, less epic mediocre version of this” then look no further, Villnoire is the perfect game for you! I sincerely hope you enjoy it. Anything you want to say, the good, the bad, the ugly - I’d love it hear it all in any format (unless it’s a 1 star review, can I kindly ask you not to upload that? Thanks).

Thank you so much for sticking with me, I couldn't have asked for more. Now it’s finally time to start a new project for the next 11 years playing more games on RMN and not constantly worry about my own game.

The Penultimate Push

Hey everyone, just another update with my regular monthly blog that you all know and love. Huh? What do you mean I don’t have a regular blog? My last update was only in... Oh, September 2018. Yikes, sorry about that.

There are two things I want to cover. Firstly, where’s this new demo I often dangle in front of you like some cruel tease, but then I don’t actually deliver? Well, my plan is for the updated demo to represent the quality the final game, but I’m pretty useless at spotting even simple errors. The teaser demo was to tread the water, this next demo is to sell the game to you guys (without actually selling the game because it’s not commercial, but you know what I mean). I don’t feel like I can release the next demo yet because I’m scared until I know it’s fully playable, no game breaking bugs and no shameless typos.

So yeah, is anyone else willing to be my extra slave beta tester? Even if you have never done it before, absolutely anyone can be a beta tester (it’s not exactly a privilege). I don’t specific criteria, but anyone with a good eye for typos would be nice, and someone who’s happy to try and break the game. I don’t have a time limit, but I’m literally waiting with a demo build I can just click “upload” and it could be available in minutes, which is pretty exciting for me!

Secondly, I just wanted to actually give you a progress update. I’ve been a fairly busy and unsociable boy as of late. I’m basically in the final push BEFORE the final push. The penultimate push, if you will. To put it in context that makes sense outside of my own deluded thoughts, I’m about 80% complete. Shocking, isn’t it? I never thought I’d actually get close to finishing a game either. I might be happy to get the new demo updated as soon as possible, but I am in no rush to complete the game. For that reason I don’t want to promise a date, as I want to take my time and get the beast finished.

Thanks so much for sticking with me for so long. My heart is going into this game, and I appreciate all the support you've given to me massively. I hope it is worth the wait!

So now what's the plan?

Hello everyone.

I’ve been a bit quiet lately, and in the past that’s always been a bad thing. I’d just hope that people forgot I existed and didn’t make me feel guilty for just staring at a 100 X 100 RTP ocean screen and hoping my game would magically create itself. I’ve sort of grown up on this website, I’m far from the most active user but I’ve been here for 10 years and never really left it. It’s taken these 10 years to finally understand how to make a game, and how to get a good work ethic.

Unless something drastic happens, I’m not far away from updating the demo and finally removing ‘teaser’ from the title. I got a bit too keen and threw out the demo that is currently available in which you kind of get to play around with the features before it just ends randomly in a cave. This new demo, of what I originally intended, is about 1 - 2 hours longer and is just a bit more ... meaningful, for lack of a better word. This new demo will remain and will be all I use to promote the game before the full release is out.

I also wanted to say a big thank you to all the patience people that have given this game a chance. I promise I listen to everything you say. When my game got featured on the spotlight last month I almost did an IRL back flip before I realised that I physically couldn’t. Just remember that my silence is no longer a bad thing, I work on this game every single weekend like an unsociable hermit to fulfil this dream of mine...

... “So is Villnoire finished yet?” - Dyhalto

No, I’m afraid it’s not. Plenty of things are complete in the project as a whole, but we’re currently looking at around 50% of the game being playable from start to finish.

Alright then, it's demo time

Hey everyone. Yes, you’re eyes do not deceive you. Little Wing Guy, the prince of vapourware is actually releasing something playable. Note though, this is a pretty pathetic teaser demo only lasting around 2 to 2:30 hours.

I wasn’t actually going to release a demo just yet, as there’s a few outstanding things I need to sort out, but I sort of realised that I announced this back in September last year, and I’m still yet to show a shred of anything playable. If you happen to be one of the original ridiculously patient people from 2008 when I first uploaded the game page, well - you’ve definitely waited long enough (and you most likely don’t exist).

Please install the font included in the game folder if you value your eyesight. I’m always happy to receive feedback, even if it’s overwhelmingly negative (as it will make me determined to prove you wrong).

I really, really hope you enjoy!

Original Soundtrack completed

Hey guys!

Just a quick update really, as the title suggests the original soundtrack is finally completed (it was actually completed like a week ago and I was too lazy to make a post but that’s beside the point). All 26 tracks are available to listen to on the ‘Original Soundtrack’ tab.

Clayton has made them all available on his Sound Cloud but I’m far too dense to figure out how to actually embed the playlist on the game page. You can follow the link here instead if you have problems listening to it on the game page. Anyway, hope you enjoy giving it a listen - I’m sure Clayton would appreciate any feedback or impressions so feel free to comment and I’ll feed it back to him.

Lastly, as I teased in my last blog post, Trevor is busy translating the title screen from paper to pixel so here’s an early preview of a WIP. Demo real soon, I promise! *This promise in no way indicates a demo will be out soon, but definitely this year.

Progress Report

A huge milestone!

I’ve realised since I announced the revival of this project back in September, I haven’t really spoken about my progress and where the project actually is. I’ve been the king of vapour ware in the past - The original Collision of Villnoire was a total unfinished mess (if you’re unlucky enough to have it sitting on your hard drive I beg you not to look at it) so it’s not been much of a revival, as it was a complete new project with the same story, characters and ideas.

I’m going the super cliché route now - but I genuinely learnt a lot from the original, and the disaster it was. I’ve kept the skeleton framework but given it a whole new body (I literally sat here for over 10 minutes on that analogy alone, impressive I know). I mostly can only spend weekends making this game, but since I’ve announced this project I have worked every single weekend without fail and because of that I’m happy to state I have completed every single map in the game! Yes, you heard correctly - every town, every dungeon, every quaint little item shop and every nook and cranny. Every developer that finishes a game has this moment and it's the first time I'm experiencing it.

I’ve been a sensible boy this time around and I’ve mapped every area in a chronological order (at times it was pure hell) and today I was able to complete the final dungeon. I did remake 3 of the dungeons since September but I’m now in a position where I’m happy with how each area plays out. I won’t lie, there’s still a lot to do - but for me, it’s a massive milestone.

There are 19 areas in the game and I’m hoping for a 10 hour playtime, but I’m not sure if that’s overly ambitious so it may more around the 8 hour mark. The main point of this blog is to say “I’m here and I’m working every weekend ticking things off one at a time”. I’ve never been in this situation before and frankly I’m feeling very confident you’ll see something this year. Thanks so much for sticking with me, I know it’s hard to keep interest when I’ve shown so little but trust me, good things are coming.

As a thanks for reading, here’s a sneak peak (early sketch) at the new title screen my fantastic artist Trevor McAleese is working on, and of course Clayton Stroup my musician is toiling away at the soundtrack as we speak. I will update the OST page shortly! Love you all.

Original Soundtrack now in production!

Well would you look at me? Updating the game page, working on my game and making regular blogs? I'm a changed man I tell ya!

If you can't tell by the title of this blog I now have found an amazing composer, Clayton Stroup to work on Villnoire with me. He's one of the nicest guys I've ever had the fortune to work with, and he's creating such a wonderful and diverse sound. It's been a really exciting past couple of weeks. An original soundtrack is best Christmas present I could have asked for (apart from socks of course). Currently it's still in production - only 6 of the 25 planned tracks have been made so far but Clayton has such a professional outlook and efficiency I'm certain it will be complete in no time. I'm having such a positive experience working with him, and I hope you all enjoy the end result as much as I do.

Anyway! If you'd like to keep up with the progress please head over to the shiny new "Original Soundtrack" tab or just click HERE. I'll be updating it regularly and I'll probably let you all know when it's complete. Thanks everyone for your continued support and belief in me, things really are moving along at a good pace - I won't let you down!

Original assets and future plans

Somehow (clearly though my bundles of charm and wit) I’ve managed to convince some poor soul to create some new character face sets for me. The face sets I was using previously were very muddy and dark. They didn’t really compliment the vibrant colours of First Seed, and half of them didn’t even look like the characters. Most importantly, they were rips from a commercial game - while I have no plans to go commercial at any stage I want to try and slowly phase out as much ripped content as I possibly can, just so I can make the project feel more a bit more like it’s mine. I’ve already updated all the screenshots on the page, but if you wanted to see them individually then here they are:

It’s nice to have something that is specifically created for this project, with the characters personalities considered, and matching the tone I’m after.

My next step is looking at an original soundtrack. It’s not something I’ve looked at too much before so I’m not too sure where to start. If anyone could point me in the right direction or recommend a friend, please hook me up! Many years ago, three tracks were created for this game by a friendly chap for free while he practiced his skills, but I never got around to using them. Not sure currently whether I want to start from scratch or use them as a starting point. Have a listen if you’re curious:

Download removal and...

Hello everyone.

Seems strange to create a random blog post on a cancelled game doesn’t it? Especially on a game as old as this. Good thing this isn’t a cancelled game anymore then eh? Due to the age of the game page I expect that many of the original subscribers are no longer around to read this (no one to blame but myself for that of course). Times have changed and this project may not be as relevant or as appealing as it once was but I’m still really happy to let you guys know my plans to continue with this project.

Why RM2k3 instead of a newer program?
RM2k3 is my guilty pleasure - I enjoy it so much it’s embarrassing. I’m aware it’s the red haired step child of the RPG Maker family and is generally more frowned upon these days. The project was started in this maker and I’ve never envisioned it made in anything else. I really like MV - I’ve used it a lot but I’ve never made anything remotely concrete with it. I get so lost in the database I can’t pull myself out and actually work on the game itself. I asked myself; do I have fun making this game and make progress with RM2k3? Or do I perhaps make a more technically impressive game that may appeal to a wider audience in MV, but might never see the light of day? The choice for me was obvious.

Why come back to this project after so long?
It makes me sad to see “Date added 20/02/2008”. That’s nearly ten years. That’s ten years I’ve had this idea in my head that still hasn’t gone away. It wasn’t some inner turmoil - one day I went back to the project and ... I kept going back to it. Before I realised it I’d made more progress than I ever did in 2008. I kept quietly working it, just for fun, but here I am and I feel like it’s worth mentioning to anyone that used to care. Ultimately, I want to make this game and I’m going to.

Don’t you have other projects your working on?
It’s true I do. I started White Magic as a small project to get something under my belt before I took on something else because I didn’t think I was ready for a real project. White Magic has taken a back seat, but that happened before I picked this back up. Don’t think that means it’s cancelled - it’s absolutely not. White Magic is a totally different beast. It’s smaller, less complex, and less serious; in a perfect world I would finish that before I even thought of this project (as you can see that isn’t quite the case). I’m not entirely sure what’s going to happen, you may well see White Magic completed before this. Villnoire is what I’m focussed on right now. Villnoire is what I’m enjoying.

Thank you for reading/skimming/ignoring completely. The game page is going to be changing a lot over the next day or so. Nothing on this page reflects the look, feel or status of the project and how it’s changed. Sometime tomorrow I will be removing the download. This is your only warning. It makes no sense it keep the download up. Give me a day or so to spruce up the game page and all shall become clear.

See ya!
