Final Fantasy: Discovery is an RGSS3 learning project aiming to mimic popular Final Fantasy series mechanics and blend them into a single game.

For decades, since the discovery of the Fire Crystal in Palamecia, the nation has been growing increasingly bold, looking to expand their territory and grip over Gaia. Of the five nations that make up the world of Gaia, only the Burmecian kingdom of Figaro has prepared themselves to challenge Palamecia, led by Emperor Vayne...

Fifty years after the Crystal's unearthing, a young girl, Ashe, emerges from where it once slept, claiming to have come from a gateway to other worlds similar to Gaia. She appears with a dire warning; the Crystals of Gaia and many other worlds are in danger. After a chance encounter with Lyra, the Princess of Tycoon, Ashe sets out with her to stabilize Gaia's Crystal of Fire...

A former Palamecian engineer and airship pilot, exiled from his home after an incident in the past, embarks on a mission to infiltrate Palamecia and observe, and if possible, steal the Fire Crystal from Palamecia. What he finds there launches him to join the bigger fight against the Empire...

A stalwart Dragoon, Reeve, from the Burmecian seat of power in Figaro, leaves the kingdom to work alongside Mysidian twins, Wedge and Vicks, on various assignments from the Elder of Mysidia. He hopes to reclaim the honor that the Burmecian Dragoons once held long ago, when his father was a Dragoon under the previous king...

In Figaro, the king's personal bodyguard, Beclem, finds a young female Caller on death's door after a long journey from Aquaria, and takes her under his care. The girl, Ellie, reveals that the Esperkind her people communicate with also feel that many worlds are in danger of utter collapse. They will need to unite the humans and Esperkind once again, as it was in the distant past, to overcome the battles ahead...

Across the mountains, in the Sanubian deserts where the famous Gold Saucer rises from the earth, the leader of a secret spy organization finds information important to Figaro's mission. The time for her to choose a side has come, and Parker, of the Gold Saucer Syndicate, always picks the winning side...

Far to the south, in Ivalice, a civil war is brewing between various political figures, coinciding with the relentless defense of the borders against demons emanating endlessly from a civilization long since destroyed. A young Lionguard trainee, Leon, is tasked with ending Ivalice's plight, allowing the once mighty nation to stand up against Palamecian advances...

In the Bisga Greenlands, home to chocobos, moogles, and people of all kinds, a reclusive hunter watches in horror as the Palamecian war machine marches on her lands. The hunter, Priscilla, vows to put an end to their destruction of Gaia's natural resources...

Deep undercover in Palamecia's military ranks, a rebel soldier who's been fighting the Palamecian Empire almost his entire life is about to bring his organization into the light, for the sake of defeating them. With his custom firearms in hand, Kelger joins the fray...

Final Fantasy Discovery is very much about bringing it all together, both in terms of mechanics and the game's story. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks Noel!
How has the project been coming along? I can tell you've been working really hard with all the progress and reworking map assets. If you ever need any beta testing just let me know, I'll do all I can to support the project.
Right now I'm face-lifting a lot of the menus and creating the next few connecting maps between the starting areas. Also adding some AI patterns to existing and new enemies, to make them a bit smarter and more dangerous.

For example, Sea Worms sometimes cast Stop. Now, it won't cast it on party members who are already under the effects of Stop. It'll always pick a target that is still moving when it decides to cast Stop again.

Since Paul and I are expanding the NPC cast of the game by a huge margin, we've gone back and rewritten a lot of dialogue, as well. Players already familiar with the game's opening events will be seeing a few more important NPC characters appearing in those scenes.

jedahxiii was kind enough to compile some tile sets for me, and I was able to work those into a new set used for new areas, so I'm mapping both Tycoon Castle and Figaro Castle, and then Paul will work his artistic magic on those locations.
Its nice to know that your still polishing early game areas to perfection. I'm quite excited for this game.

While William's working on the above, I've been focusing on parallaxing maps and designing new npcs. Looking forward to when we can show you/elaborate further on our progress. :)

Can we expect Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII quality NPCs: many of them having their own little story somewhat incorporated with the game's story?

I don't think we're gonna get deep into EVERY NPC's lives, but some of them yes, of course. There's a LOT of new characters.

Absolutely.
Now that sounds dope. Seems like it'll make the world seem more alive and organic. I like what I've seen from the battle mechanics and I can't wait to see what you guys are accomplishing for the rest of the game.

I said many of them, not "all".

This makes me happy. To tell the truth, I actually liked more Archades NPCs from Final Fantasy XII than most of the playable cast (bar Balthier and Fran, maybe Ashe).
Question. When it comes to new characters, are there more story based npc's, such as the villains, or do you mean more npc's to interact with in each area with individual quests and branching story developments?

Answer: They're not mutually exclusive.

Our intent is to simply further flesh out the vast world of FFD by making it more populated, lively and interactive. There's a plethora of different NPCs who all serve different roles in the story. Some may be integral to the main plot. Some may be peripheral characters who's purposes are to unlock side content. Some may be totally inconsequential and are only present as extra world flavor. There's probably going to be a bit of everything.

Here's a bone for you... while there are going to be a LOT of new characters added to the game... most, if not all of them... aren't exactly... "new" characters.

Gotcha *catches you out the window to make sure game gets finished " lol
Oh just a quick developmental note: we decided to go back to calling our accessory items Relics, rather than calling them Augments (same number of items, same effects really). I went ahead and added in a few more now, inspired by some of the accessories seen in later FF games.
Okay, that's interesting. Did you think relics sounded better than augments with the world you were creating?

In my opinion, relic names were preferable. I think our consensus was that they were more iconic than the augments so we went with that.
